darrenoc··on The man who killed Google Search?
Exactly. The main way to get promoted at Google is to claim that you launched something important. Results in a lot of busywork and misaligned incentives.
darrenoc··on The man who killed Google Search?
That amazing internal knowledge graph you're talking about folks on the outside never seeing? That is very ironic because that knowledge graph used to be Freebase.com and a lot of the data came from the open data community who volunteered their efforts and expertise. Then Google bought Metaweb and shut down Freebase.
darrenoc··on PathQuery, Google's Graph Query Language
I think it's far from a fad, the adoption of the semantic web has been enormous in the past 5 years. Almost every major tech company (and many financial institutions) now have their own Knowledge Graph team.
darrenoc··on Replit used legal threats to kill my open-source project
There's no mention of any NDA, you've just constructed it as a straw man.
darrenoc··on Replit used legal threats to kill my open-source project
Why are you reading and replying to the comments when you haven't read the article? You've come at this with a terrible take by inventing a non-existent NDA that would exonerate the CEO. Why bother?
darrenoc··on Deutsche Bank Whistleblower Vanishes
His car was found abandoned with the engine running. He was murdered.
darrenoc··on Sid Meier: More Than Just Civilization
I'm not sure if he designed the game as such, but it's widely reported that it was Sids last project before his departure from Microprose.

It's still a cult classic among MTG fans for the novel RPG aspects.

darrenoc··on Products purchased at Apple Store in India cannot be refunded or exchanged
This is harmful racial stereotyping. Most of the hardest workers I know are Indian.
darrenoc··on 54% of San Francisco homes are in buildings that would be illegal to build today
That's a ridiculous expectation for a city. Urban housing needs to be dense. The kind of housing you're describing belongs in the suburbs.
darrenoc··on A solo journey to $100k in sales
There is a large contingent on HN who are both rich and cheap, so I don't think this holds any water
darrenoc··on With Proton and Steam Play, many Windows games now work on Linux
I don't know why you're up in arms about this, but it's clearly not false. Almost all of the games content is PvE based. The PvP mode is very small in scope compared to everything else that's available.
darrenoc··on Watch live: Zuckerberg, Dorsey testify before Senate [video]
Oh dear, there's no way anyone can be that stupid is there?
darrenoc··on Police told not to download NHS Covid-19 app
It may be reasonable, but it's very poor optics. It makes it seem like they are trying to coverup any possible COVID exposures within the force.
darrenoc··on Barbados introduces plan to allow visitors to work remotely there for a year
If you're not a US citizen, you won't have to pay income at all due to tax residency rules. only the US is brazen enough to charge non-resident citizens income tax
darrenoc··on Wind and solar are cheaper than thought, admits UK government
This is a bit like when they cancelled the Rotherhithe walking & cycling bridge because it was allegedly going to cost 400 million. Powerful establishment lobbying groups ensure that government estimates for green projects make them seem unaffordable.
darrenoc··on UberEats could be underpaying delivery drivers on 21% of trips
It's noteworthy that Deliveroo is already doing the kind of vertical integration you describe, it's called "Deliveroo Editions"
darrenoc··on Apple has €13bn Irish tax bill overturned
The thinly veiled subtext is that the place they are required to pay it is nowhere.
darrenoc··on Apple has €13bn Irish tax bill overturned
This is a disgraceful verdict for the Irish people. We laid ourselves bare as a tax haven for MegaCorps, and now we're not even seeing the benefits.
darrenoc··on Portland approves 10% cap on fees that food delivery apps can charge restaurants
Nope, they don't make any profit even when charging 30% fees. So this 10% cap will probably cause them to withdraw from the market.
darrenoc··on Bye, Amazon
It's not that complicated. If you look up Ocado, they have entirely automated their warehouses.
darrenoc··on Transformers Are Graph Neural Networks
It says a lot about my knowledge of ML that I went into this post fully expecting it be about Autobots and Decepticons.
darrenoc··on Show HN: movies.io — torrent search like it should be
There are other places for discussing the movie as a whole: a torrent discussion should focus on the torrent IMO.
darrenoc··on Behavioral Targeting: the most underused technique in today’s marketing
In general, I find this approach incredibly annoying. Usually I would rather see the canonical version of a given site.

Hypothetical example: because I'm running Linux and in the US, a site shows me content/software geared towards US Linux users. However I am trying to find a solution for a Windows issue with my girlfriend's laptop, who is based in Ireland.

And a similar but different anecdote: Steam has consistently refused to let me pay for games with my US credit card while I'm in Europe. I have to use a VPN for the payment to process. Wat?
