data_spy··on OpenAI Is Ruthless [video]
AI-hardware startup, iyO is suing Jony Ive's AI-hardware startup called io for trademark infringement, right after OpenAI bought them for $6.5 billion.
data_spy··on Show HN: I built a Yahoo Messenger-inspired web chat app – pure nostalgia
a/s/l
data_spy··on Five minutes of exercise a day could lower blood pressure
"Could" is an interesting choice of word. I know researchers are cautious but that wording makes it meaningless.
data_spy··on ChatGPT Search
I did a simple test of "Chicago Velodrome", it provided something that has been closed since 2016, Google gave a better result of something that is actually around but in the Chicagoland area
data_spy··on How long til we're all on Ozempic?
The research says you gain the weight back:

"For the two in every five patients who discontinue the treatments within a year, according to a 2024 JAMA study, this means that they are likely to rebound to their original weight with less muscle and a higher body fat percentage." The other issue is the muscle loss on being on these drugs as "Clinical data shows that 25 per cent of weight loss from Eli Lilly’s shot resulted from a reduction in lean body mass, including muscle, while 40 per cent of Novo Nordisk’s jab was due to a drop in lean body mass." data_spy··on Ask HN: How do you deal with rude interviewers?
For whatever reason, companies do not think this way. I usually get the rude comments with the 'we passed on you' email or voicemail.
data_spy··on I got a computer science degree in 3 months for less than $5000 (2020)
Grass is always greener. You don't know the counterfactual and you would have likely been disappointed in your parents had they sent you to college early as well.
data_spy··on What I learned from running a concierge search engine
There is a legitimate start-up that basically is outsourcing tasks to a digital personal assistant but they log all questions and their researched answers. It make take a while but they will have a moat within a few years with a really robust repository.
data_spy··on Lesson: Stop saying “Hi” and waiting for a response
This is a huge pet peeve of mine.
data_spy··on Tech Interview Handbook
With that kind of confidence, I hire them on the spot!
data_spy··on Some locals say a Bitcoin mining operation is ruining one of the Finger Lakes
The alternative, the business pays a fee per day for lane and sidewalk closures. I guarantee they will close the lanes and sidewalks less often and for shorter durations.
data_spy··on Some locals say a Bitcoin mining operation is ruining one of the Finger Lakes
I hate it when people claim jobs or work trump citizens rights. A minor example of this, why should developers and construction sites close sidewalks and car lanes?
data_spy··on I know the secret to the quiet mind but wish I’d never learned it
Not sure if true, but whenever I've had a foreign born doctor, they tended to be better in my experience.
data_spy··on 80% of orgs that paid the ransom were hit again
how many were hit again who didn't pay?
data_spy··on I wrote a children's book / illustrated guide to Apache Kafka
I will show this to my daughter later today!
data_spy··on Wisconsin has negotiated a dramatically scaled-back deal with Foxconn
In this case, it was actually a Governor who didn't know math more so than corruption. At least for the original terms in 2017.
data_spy··on Brazil has become South America’s superspreader event
Anyone else find that protest picture ironic?
data_spy··on Google’s FLoC Is a Terrible Idea
If it's terrible, look at the other suggested solutions. Some are ultra terrible and will slow down the web
data_spy··on There’s no such thing as “a startup within a big company”
This is correct. When I was at Allstate they had a 'labs' team to come up with innovative new technology. They were the only ones with standing desks, treadmill desks, bicycle desks, and over two years the only thing they accomplished was design a phone holder for a bicycle.

They had much greater success using Kaggle for data science competitions in terms of innovation.

data_spy··on Uber Hires Prominent Critic to Focus on Treatment of Drivers
Rockefeller did this with Standard Oil. They would routinely hire critics. It silences the critic and causes distrust of them going forward. People never trusted those critics ever again.
data_spy··on I’ve changed my mind on Bitcoin
At least the article didn't say, "I'm not bullish on bitcoin, but I'm bullish on blockchain"
data_spy··on “I've had to relearn coding to get through the new interviews”
It used to mean something more than it does now. I noticed ex-Googlers were well above average in 2012, now they can be below avg. I have a colleague of mine at my current job that makes a point of being an ex-Googler but they only worked there for 6 months, so it is kind of meaningless.
data_spy··on Dropbox saved $75M over two years by building its own infrastructure (2018)
Agreed. I work at a company that does 150 Billion transactions a day and it is cheaper being in the cloud than on prem for us. Maybe the variable cost is more but the fixed cost is a lot less for the business.
data_spy··on Playing on Hard Mode
I was looking into this as well. The main difference between the two is user acquisition. Airbnb is doing no marketing right now and vrbo is doing lots. Also 46% more of their users go directly to Airbnb.com versus Vrbo. So you can run the exact same business but if one doesn't need to advertise and the other does it can make huge differences to the financials.
data_spy··on Airbnb S-1
89% for Expedia, assuming you count search + direct. Airbnb is at 88% for the same breakdown according to Similarweb. However SimilarWeb has direct for Airbnb at 61.47% versus Expedia's 37.72%
data_spy··on Moderna Covid vaccine candidate almost 95% effective, trials show
I think the 99%+ metric is reassuring. However the 1% will have a massive cost to our healthcare system, we are in extremistan as Nassim Taleb likes to say. For example, in normal times 10% of the US population represent 64-66% of the health care costs (https://youtu.be/2qhrPa7paAU).
data_spy··on $200k in sales from a $6k advertisement
I was just on that daringfireball last week looking at the markdown write-up!
data_spy··on Predicting Football Results with Statistical Modelling
The thing is, the size of the wager and the payouts are just as important. I was never a sports gambler, but spent two years counting cards at blackjack in rural casinos as my job. This plays out with the Kelly Criterion: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelly_criterion So you can have inefficient odds as the house, and still win. Did the models also provide optimal bet size given the probability of winning?
data_spy··on MalwareBazaar – Malware Sample Exchange
That's smart, I'd probably just play with it on my computer, since testing code in production is my life's motto.
data_spy··on Apple CEO Impressed by Remote Work, Sees Permanent Changes
If they really want that, they should just get a job in Vancouver with a different employer.
