dataengineer56··on Harvard particle physicist Matthew Schwartz drops 36 papers authored with Claude
"drops" is unclear here - it could mean either "publishes" or "retracts"
dataengineer56··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
Yes but not to the same extent. Professional, paid moderators following a centrally-defined set of rules are going to act differently to terminally-online volunteer mods.
dataengineer56··on Grammarly will send unhinged messages to all your users if you try to cancel
Good luck actually getting them to do something. Also "Europe" is an entire continent with many different countries and laws, you might want to be more specific.
dataengineer56··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
I've flown on half a dozen different airlines this year and all have had exactly the same stance: no power banks in checked luggage, and if they're in hand luggage you must be able to see them at all times (not in overhead storage).

You're also not allowed to use them even if you do have them with you. This is all very strictly enforced with reminders at the check-in desk and several announcements before take-off.

dataengineer56··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
You can't vote for your own country so Australian bedtime is irrelevant.
dataengineer56··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Using it while flying will be complicated by the fact that all airlines have banned the use of power banks. If the onboard USB socket isn't very powerful then you'll only get an hours' use.

> It's a missed opportunity for the digital soverignty the EU says it so badly needs. The code for a government backed WhatsApp competitor is there, in multiple instances even. Launch a WhatsApp clone and put all governement communication through it so everyone has to have it installed, and you have an instant EU-wide userbase. From there, people will naturally start to use it between themselves.

I think you have completely misjudged how much the majority of people would not want to use an EU-controlled chat app.

dataengineer56··on Incident with Github.com
> Those are both hilarious to me.

Why is it hilarious to believe that the industry leader might be better at something than doing it yourself?

dataengineer56··on Applying a photosynthetic process to treat “dry eye”
I never had dry eyes until I got laser eye surgery. Some mornings I wake up with a very sore dry left eye.

One thing that helps with fatigue was to get some very weak glasses that I use when I'm working at a computer. They just make my eyes much more relaxed.

dataengineer56··on In Australia, a home battery boom has helped cut wholesale power prices
I'm not asking for guesses thank you (especially if they turn out to be incorrect).
dataengineer56··on In Australia, a home battery boom has helped cut wholesale power prices
What does "LCOE" stand for?
dataengineer56··on No Data Centers in My Backyard
>But it is amusing to see how humanity continues to oppose tech and the tech buldozes anyway, like a evil monster.

So you're saying the UK should never have built a railway system? It sounds like tech is right.

dataengineer56··on Mini retirements: like a sabbatical, but much smaller
The way compound interest works then the impact of taking months off mid-career can have a huge impact on retirement age. I'd personally rather just work continuously and retire younger.
dataengineer56··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
Switzerland is in Europe
dataengineer56··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
> Qatar was manifestly unsuitable

Every stadium was within a 30 mile radius and fans reported a clean, safe experience. Sounds like a good place for a tournament to me.

dataengineer56··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
CONCACAF almost always share opinions with UEFA, that really wasn't a surprise or anything new.
dataengineer56··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
CONCACAF and UEFA almost always vote together, but they are far outnumbered by every other region and FIFA only needs a majority vote for a rule to pass. You're excluding about half of the planet by only mentioning Africa.
dataengineer56··on LG to ban residential proxies from smart TV apps
The new Chromecasts and Apple TVs are really pretty good. I connect my LG TV to the wifi every few months to run updates, then disconnect it after. I control my TV through the Chromecast remote, so I never see any LG dashboards/apps.
dataengineer56··on CarPlay Is Additive
Another advantage of the "it's on your phone" aspect is Consistency. You get into a new car, all you need to figure out is how to open CarPlay, no need to learning a completely different and often complicated infotainment system.
dataengineer56··on London's Free Roof Terraces
This has been the standard for most/all major tourist attractions for years now.
dataengineer56··on The worst job interview I ever had
15 years ago a FAANG flew me from England to the US for a grad interview. The HR recruiter met me for a coffee before the tech interviews started and said she'd ask me some gentle questions to ease me into the day.

She opened with "do you believe in god?" Not knowing laws or workers' rights in a foreign country then I had to give a very stunted, mumbled response. I complained after I got back home and was told she should not have asked that question.

dataengineer56··on Today I've made the difficult decision to reduce the size of Coinbase by ~14%
A 30 min 1-1 per week per report would be a full working day. Never mind that if you're an IC then you'll also be expected to support other people using your code, as well as analysing and approving decisions for your reports.
dataengineer56··on The time I didn't meet Jeffrey Epstein
> For whatever reason, I forwarded this email to my parents, brother, and then-fiancee Dana.

A very strange action to take for someone who claims to have no recollection of the meeting.

dataengineer56··on I found the perfect yearly calendar (for me)
Is there a way to get rid of the text box overlay or does it just disappear when you print it?
dataengineer56··on Heathrow scraps liquid container limit
In my experience many of them do feel like they're doing something important, and some seem principally motivated to do the job by the promise of being able to bully travellers.
dataengineer56··on Claude outage
I asked a novel question, well-written and clear, and a "subject matter expert" decided it was too similar to another question (it wasn't), so they defaced it, downvoted it and closed it.

Stack Overflow is dying, it's extremely difficult to get new questions through. Even if they survive moderation then they're unlikely to get answers.

dataengineer56··on Claude outage
If I have a question for SO these days then I ask Claude instead and tell it to use SO where possible. It's preferable to actually asking it on SO which often results in the question being edited, downvoted and closed by someone with an anime child profile picture.
dataengineer56··on I played 1k hands of online poker and built a web app with Cursor AI
It's become a lot more difficult to win online since online poker was banned in the USA. The USA sat at a huge net loss online and every other country profited.
dataengineer56··on Mississippi Can't Possibly Have Good Schools
They hold students back if they don't pass a basic reading literacy test in third grade.
dataengineer56··on DoorDash to acquire Deliveroo
Nando's chips are cooked fresh when the delivery driver arrives so that they're as fresh as possible. The probelm here is that chips travel horribly.
