dataking··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2024)
Immunant | Software Engineer | REMOTE (US only) | Full-time | $110k - $150k + retirement benefits

If you're interested in low-level, resource-constrained and/or privileged execution environments, consider joining our small team. At Immunant, we spend much time staring at weird build errors, ISA or ABI documentation, or digging through obscure build systems or C code written 20 years ago. In any case, we strive to make the systems we're working on more secure, more efficient, and have more Rust in them (whenever we get a chance).

If you have recent, professional experience with C/C++ and Rust and know about operating systems, hypervisor internals, or compilers, we'd love to hear from you. Candidates with only superficial knowledge in all of these areas are not encouraged to apply. Please note that we can only consider candidates resident in the US.

We offer a remote-friendly, collaborative work environment with a high degree of autonomy and competitive benefits.

Send your resume to team@immunant.com; we look forward to hearing from you.

dataking··on The AI revolution is already losing steam
> says Gary Marcus, a cognitive scientist who sold an AI startup to Uber in 2016

for context, Marcus has a quite bearish view on AI and lots of others, most prominently Yann LeCun, disagree with Marcus.

dataking··on Microsoft, Khan Academy Partner to Make Khanmigo Teaching Tool Free
I agree with both of these takes but want to add that the tool might not have been tested on all the languages spoken outside of the US. Can't be too careful with kids in the target audience.

Same for Google Sheets, they're fairly interoperable with the MS formats too.

dataking··on EU chip goal 'unrealistic' says ASML CEO
> The only that I think is given that will expand its global market share is China.

That doesn't make sense given that all the other big blocks are cooperating across borders while China is subject to stiff export controls in an area with real technological chokepoints.

dataking··on Meta now lets EU users unlink their Facebook, Messenger and Instagram accounts
> I really believe the primary reason is that Europe is not one culturally homogeneous area that speaks one language

There are likely several reasons at play, culture being a big one. However, there are other reasons at play such as differences in law, financing, immigration, the job market. Bert Huber, an entrepreneur in the EU has given this some thought:

dataking··on Meta now lets EU users unlink their Facebook, Messenger and Instagram accounts
While I agree that there is lots of innovation and talent in the EU, I think there is also an "innovation gap" with other developed economies. Here's a take from the Economist [0] but you can find similar articles from the Financial Times, Blomberg, and other similar outlets.

dataking··on U.S. moves closer to filing antitrust case against Apple
> Blast them for forbidding competing browsers on iOS.

They allow competing browsers but they have to use the OS-provided JavaScript engine. I guess one could make an argument that allowing third-party engines would encourage innovation in the browser space but at the same time, there is a strong security argument for very narrowly limiting the JIT-code execution entitlement.

dataking··on Understand how transformers work by demystifying the math behind them
> is it worth it to invest time to get some idea about this whole AI field? I'm from a compE background

Might be worth thinking about how it will specifically affect your field of expertise. Jensen Huang says your job won't be taken over by an AI but by a human using an AI.

> It sounds absurd that the biggest social media company would pivot from its golden goose. But when you peek into Meta's egg basket, you see it's empty.

Lost me there. Meta made $34B on digital advertising in Q3, if that's not a golden egg (from the investor perspective), IDK what is.

dataking··on Breakdown of faults by car brand: Tesla has replaced Dacia at the bottom
Norway is one of the countries with the highest GDP per capita. I think this puts the norwegian consumer in a better position to by an EV even if it costs more than a comparable ICE vehicle. Not sure that is true all over the world.
dataking··on Nvidia CEO: We bet the farm on AI and no one knew it
I think that's oversimplifying things. The acquired podcast has covered Nvidia's different growth periods in depth. I highly recommend anyone interested to give them a listen:

dataking··on ASML and Samsung seal deal on 2nm chips
AFAIK the cost of producing semiconductors on a leading-edge node are so high you are forced to aggegate demand across seveal chip designers. Intel offering foundry services is evidence of this dynamic.

Edit: grammar.

dataking··on Barcelona Supercomputing Center presents Sargantana: new open-source RISC-V chip
> Are you telling me the EU, the richest block in the world, has less money to spend on fabs than TSMC

That could very well turn out to be the case in practice, not for lack of money, but inability to provide the promised subsidies according to Financial Times:

dataking··on Barcelona Supercomputing Center presents Sargantana: new open-source RISC-V chip
> The Barcelona Supercomputing Center [...] presented on Wednesday the new Sargantana chip, the third generation of open source processors designed entirely at the BSC.

> Researchers from other universities and research centres such as the Centro de Investigación en Computación del Instituto Politécnico Nacional de México (CIC-IPN) [...] have participated in the development of Sargantana.

So this was designed entirely in Spain but it is also joint work with a university in Mexico ;-) Nice project though; I've visited BSC and they do a lot of cool work there.

> Is the answer computed on a single NVidia GPU?

Most likely given that one of their open positions for a GPU programmer includes

Edit: only narrows it down to NVidia hardware, IDK if single GPU or not.

dataking··on Mixtral of experts
> they are probably well-placed to answer some proposals from European governments

That's true but I wonder how they stack up against Aleph Alpha and Kyutai? Genuinely curious as I haven't found a lot of concrete info on their offerings.

dataking··on Mixtral of experts
Microsoft, Apple, and Google also have more resources at their disposal yet Linux is doing just fine (to put it mildly). As long as Mistral delivers something unique, they'll be fine.
dataking··on Terraform module for scalable GitHub action runners on AWS
This.

You even need to self-host if you want to test code that uses AVX512 outside of an emulator since the default runners do not support that. Same if you want to test aarch64-specific code paths on Linux, Windows, or macOS.

dataking··on Gemini AI
A startup doesn't have the same target of its back as a large publicly traded corporation. It also has a different culture and is expected to take risks that non-startups aren't. In other words, not an apples-to-apples comparison.

Edit: grammar.

Thanks for backing up your point with a link. I agree that Galileo is more accurate than the much older GPS system. On the other hand, the GPS system became fully operational in 1995 as far as I understand, and the Galileo system is yet to be fully operational almost a decade after the original target date.
