datamingle··on Strongest earthquake in years rattles Southern California
Interesting startup in Earthquake insurance https://www.jumpstartrecovery.com

Temasek (Singapore sovereign fund) have the money to get involved if they want.
datamingle··on Wi-Fi Alliance Introduces Wi-Fi Certified WPA3 Security
Seems like it would encounter same problem earlier in Wifi history

"Early 802.11 products suffered from interoperability problems because the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) had no provision for testing equipment for compliance with its standards."

datamingle··on States Can Require Internet Tax Collection, Supreme Court Rules
Think of it from the perspective of the business selling goods. Then the quote makes more sense.
datamingle··on JeffBezos Is Already $40B Richer This Year–While Typical Amazon Worker Made $12K
There is no way Bezos could pursue Blue Origin as fast as he has without being having multiple Billions of net worth. Rockets are expensive and extremely risky.

So your premise is incorrect.

datamingle··on GDPR for lazy people: Block all European users with Cloudflare Workers
How do you handle developer computers with possible client data on them, even semi-anonymized? Or when communicating issues on the live server, you might transfer client information to other stake holders to debug issue. Are you tracking that communication. Where does the communication data reside, perhaps on a server outside of the EU?

There is a lot of complications that arise if you think about the second order/third order consequences of the law.

datamingle··on Apple Avoids Amazon’s Beauty Contest, Searches Secretly for New Campus
Marketing, that is how it works.
datamingle··on How IBM quietly pushed out 20,000 aging workers
Could this not be more with Pensions than just ageism? I'm going to make the assumption that perhaps older IBM workers had generous pension packages. Human living longer, more costly, etc.
datamingle··on Tesla switching to 24/7 shifts to push for more model 3s by June

datamingle··on Supply and Demand Does a Poor Job of Explaining Depressed Wages
Discussing wages with supply & demand and not taking into account the worldwide labor supply. At some point, it is more profitable for companies to move overseas.
datamingle··on IIHS: Model S has higher collision claim frequencies than comparable luxury cars
> On average, Teslas travel three more miles per day than other large luxury cars, HLDI found

Would like to know what is 3 miles in percentage terms. Could account for higher collision claim frequencies.

datamingle··on An Update on Last Week’s Accident
You realize killing people less than average is not dangerous. It is actually safer. Without understanding this basic logic, than I am not sure what else to say.
datamingle··on An Update on Last Week’s Accident
It is only dangerous, if it is worse than the average driver.
datamingle··on Launch HN: Promise (YC W18) – Cost-effective, more humane alternative to jail
What happens when Promise loses an individual? Who pays the cost for them to be tracked down and returned. I'm assuming existing systems will be used such as bounty hunters to do this job.
datamingle··on A Tiny Hedge Fund Made 8,600% on a Vix Bet
Glass half full/Glass half empy. A bet against the opposite of an overpriced event will be underpriced.

datamingle··on Snap falls to IPO price
They do AR & Marketing amazingly and hardware quite well. I am not sure a social network is their best business model though. Hopefully they can pivot to something else using what they are great at.
datamingle··on Blue Apron, Struggling to Woo Investors, Lowers Price Range for IPO
Bad news for podcasts
datamingle··on Amazon Prime Wardrobe lets you try on and return clothes free
My girlfriend does this already, but uses the return system from various stores. Buys identical things in different sizes to see what fits best, returns the ones that does not fit.

Makes sense to have the discount if you keep items, savings from processing returns.

datamingle··on Automattic is closing its San Francisco office as most employees work remotely
There are coworking spaces you can rent with fellow telecommuters in most cities and of course coffee shops as well.

datamingle··on US quits Paris climate pact
US has a long history of upholding its agreements compared to other countries. Germany & France cannot even uphold spending 2% of GDP for NATO: http://money.cnn.com/2017/05/25/news/nato-funding-explained-...

Agreed in 2006 of 2% target, then had to reiterate the target in 2014 since many members did not meet 2% target. "Members that fell short at the time promised to meet their obligations by 2024" .. it is an obligation not some "aspirational goal" as some have mentioned below.

datamingle··on Longevity Inc
"As we age, we get more and more set in our ways"

I think that is caused by we know the end of life is closer. We do not want to take the effort to change. If we know we will live forever or much longer, I think we are more apt to be flexible and change.
