Two things:

1. Nobody is entitled to venture capitalist funding. It is not an oddly named and run social works program.

2. VC funding is not a home run. It is not free money. If the only way you can launch a tech business is venture funding with the hope of hitting it out of the park before the funds’ cliff, perhaps consider if the return justifies the effort.

davecheney··on Making Go telemetry opt-in is a mistake
> At some level, the only way to get answers to these kinds of questions is to have the tool report data about how a tool is used to the maintainers of that tool.

This is frankly bullshit. Before always online telemetry there were there things called user groups, special interest groups, submissions, committees, etc.

You don’t need to surveil Go users to understand how they use the tooling, they’ll tell you, if you didn’t create an ivory tower around those who work (or have worked) for Google, and those who clearly aren’t worthy.

The fact this proposal is dead in the ground is an example that just because you could write a program to do a thing, one doesn’t need to write a program to do a thing.

Good riddance.

> One common refrain is that “blockchain is a solution in search of a problem.”

After reading this article it seems that the most useful thing someone has thought to use the blockchain for is [checks notes] a form of social media popularity contest to recover the key to your blockchain wallet.

davecheney··on Golang SSA performance numbers
Yes.
davecheney··on Golang SSA performance numbers
> Also, since Go is self-compiled, does that mean we'll have to wait until 1.7.1 for the speed improvements to hit the compiler? :-P

No. The compiler compiles itself during the bootstrap phase.

davecheney··on Golang SSA performance numbers
The compiler always compiles itself as part of the bootstrap process. The final compiler is built with itself and thus uses its own SSA code generation.
davecheney··on Golang SSA performance numbers
The inner loop went from 15 instructions to 16 because the register optimiser is not finished yet.

davecheney··on Go 1.5 max procs default
Java is the obvious example that springs to mind. Because of the requirement to be backwards compatible with Java 1.4, all the type information is erased during compilation. The call for reified types in Java has been heard for over a decade now.

C++ compile type templating is the cause of egregiously long compilation speeds. One of the original drivers for the creation of Go was the speed of C++ compilation.

I don't think you can separate a desire that generics was implemented a different way in these examples from the regret that their current implementation causes.

davecheney··on Go 1.5 max procs default
> You have an advantage to learn on others mistakes (e.g. made by those Java guys) and practice.

And the lesson learnt from studying other languages is "Don't add generics unless it's right for the language, even if that means choosing, on balance, to _NOT_ implement them at all".
