davuinci··on Single sign-on: What we learned during our identity alpha
Why is UK one of the few countries left to require such documents? I have been asked for those documents in several EU countries to prove residency.
davuinci··on Facebook-owned sites were down
There are several people earning their living through Facebook/Instagram and there is a whole marketplace that would impact lots of people. Don't get me wrong, I don't use or like FB in any way but FB disappearing overnight would definitely have drawbacks for lots of people.

A better wording would be that the aim of decentralization is the option to eliminate the third party. If someone wants to use a third party to transact then he should have the freedom to do so. Similarly, if someone wants to transact with another party directly then this should also be allowed.
davuinci··on A search engine that favors text-heavy sites and punishes modern web design
Congrats for the effort, I really like the idea and it works wonderfully for some searches.

However, I searched "infiniband" and the results are far away from what I would expect or like to see. Most of the results that appear first are completely unrelated to the topic.

My guess is that there would be an even more negative impact on sales if they would call it 12s. Lots of consumers would assume that only minor improvements were made and would choose not to upgrade.
davuinci··on Ergo IRC Server
In greek, the word "ergo" means "work". As a Greek myself, it seems like this etymology is much more common and used.

Similarly, when we say that something is ergonomic, it derives from "ergo" + "nomic" which means distribution of work. Distribution of work typically minimizes fatigue and that's also the meaning when we are talking about ergonomic chairs, keyboards, etc.

What's the limitation on adding additional vertical layers though? One apparent limitation could be that by adding several vertical layers it would require the wire to be longer.
davuinci··on Ask HN: Top Coursera Courses?
Financial Markets course [0] taught by Robert Shiller (Nobel laureate) is a phenomenal course to understand the basics of financial markets. He explains how financial markets work from an engineering perspective which is an interesting approach in contrast to other similar courses.

davuinci··on Data engineering learning path with recommended resources
Is anyone aware of a similar list but for systems programmer learning path?
davuinci··on Show HN: I made a site where you practice typing by retyping entire novels
Seems a very good idea. Do you have any plans on adding classical tech books?
davuinci··on Quadsort: a stable non-recursive merge sort
To be precise, we can prove that no sort comparison-based algorithm can do better than O(n log(n)) comparisons. There are some variations though that do better than that, though they are not based on comparisons (i.e counting sort, radix sort).
davuinci··on Ask HN: How comfortable do you feel using cloud-based password managers?
The only thing that (hopefully) is stored in the cloud with respect to password managers is the encrypted vault containing your passwords. Securing your vault with a strong master password in addition to a U2F like YubiKey seems to me a pretty safe way to store your important data.

Additionally, using an open-source password manager that you can audit alleviates any further paranoid concerns you may have. If you also worry about the cloud provider suffering a severe outage then you can always keep offline backups. Assuming that you have the expertise and time you can implement a solution yourself but it always depends on your threat model and your level of paranoia.
