db579··on Matrix Conference 2025 Highlights
Is Element One not being offered anymore? Will existing users continue to be supported?
db579··on Matrix v1.15
Appreciate the response, that's great to hear.
db579··on Matrix v1.15
It's a little frustrating that Element X is constantly pitched as the answer when it isn't yet supported by Element's own EMS One hosted service.
db579··on Matrix.org Will Migrate to MAS
Arathorn I'm a bit confused that Element pushes Element X so much already when your own Element One service doesn't support it yet?
db579··on Google is already pushing WEI into Chromium
Google can also decide at any time to put those web properties behind forced logins, or paywalls or just shutter them altogether. If Google doesn't want them to be part of the open web they won't be, regardless of whether this particular set of things is implemented or not. If we're all dependent on them enough that that's a problem for us, then that dependency is the problem.
db579··on UK: Excess deaths in 2022 among worst in 50 years
I think this is a common framing because not everyone is aware that GPs are independent private businesses. We always refer to them as "part of the NHS" as if they were (or at least should be) equivalent to each other.
db579··on Mobian: A look back in the mirror and a glimpse of the future
Surely that vision is exactly what (vanilla) Gnome is? On Desktop and on Mobile (with LibAdwaita). Incidentally they also seem to get a lot of criticism for having a strong vision.

db579··on Patreon Lays off 17% of Staff
Those are things the company is doing to take responsibility, not him personally which is what his statement should imply.
db579··on Ask HN: Is it ok to reject a job because I don’t like their software?
It's the worst software I use on a day to day basis and it's not close. Granted that's on Linux which likely isn't Microsoft's main focus but still nothing else does this much this badly.
db579··on Ask HN: Experiences w “JS-free” front ends? (Hotwire, Unpoly, Inertia.js, htmlx)
Experience with Rails and Hotwire has been very positive so far.
db579··on Black cabs roar back into favour as app firms put up their prices
Do any cab companies here let you book online via browser/PWA rather than requiring a proprietary app to be downloaded? Uber used to have m.uber.com but it seems lately that doesn't actually allow you to book rides in this region anymore and I've not come across any others yet.
db579··on PinePhone Pro Announced
This exists and is probably the closest thing to trying to do that. Stalled out well short of millions though...

Element.io also offer paid managed servers where they do the bridging for you if you'd rather not deal with it yourself. Starts at around $10 a month for a home server plus some light WhatsApp bridging and works surprisingly well, with the caveats already mentioned above about calling.
db579··on PinePhone Pro Announced
Really depends how you define the task doesn't it? If it's "I have the ability to message other people" there's plenty of ways to accomplish that on this device. If you define the task as "I need to message other people specifically on a Google/Apple messenger application", well then it's always going to be out of Pine64s hands to some extent?
db579··on The PinePhone could bring the Linux mobile ecosystem to life
Starling do offer an API anyone can use to interact with their own account. Doesn't allow full functionality yet though.
db579··on Sublime Text 4
Would you ever consider a licensing model similar to Cockroach DBs BSL where older versions fall into the public domain/are open sourced once they're no longer revenue generating? Or perhaps once a new major version is out?
db579··on Trapped priors as a basic problem of rationality
I think this is often confused because "works" is poorly defined leading both sides to interpret it as: works == achieves my aims == matches my values
db579··on Big name corporations more likely to commit fraud: study
> just because a negative emergent behavior manifested doesn't mean any one person had to have taken an action rising to the level of criminal culpability.

If that is true (and I think it is) I would argue the law is wrong. It should absolutely be the case that senior executives have criminal liability for criminal behaviours that emerge under their stewardship whether or not they personally contributed to them. Either they knew about it in which case they're complicit or they didn't in which case they're negligent. The risk of criminal liability is also the only possible justification for the high current level of CEO pay relative to average salaries at most big name companies.

db579··on Robinhood denies claims that it sold GameStop shares out from under its traders
Yep, in Europe inter-bank transfers are also instant and if the underlying reason for all these regulations, confusions and trading impact is that US institutions have just been too cheap to upgrade the legacy infrastructure running the biggest store and exchange of value in the world then frankly surprise and anger seems justified.
db579··on Why Robinhood disabled buys but not sells
If that's genuinely the case then it's no wonder people are angry. At the scale of money involved legacy tech just shouldn't be an acceptable excuse.
db579··on Why Robinhood disabled buys but not sells
Would also like to know the answer to this. From the amount of people explaining the nuance of the deposit rules it seems many people expect trading to work the way you've described. The fact that it (counterintuitively?) doesn't seems like it might be a flaw in the system.
db579··on Why Robinhood disabled buys but not sells
It may well be that it does take payment processors t+2 days but I think the point remains that it should not.
db579··on Robinhood denies claims that it sold GameStop shares out from under its traders
OK so as a none techie why is it not genuinely instant? Why can't my cash be exchanged for the stock in real time (where real time is defined as within a minute or two say).
db579··on U.S. Suffers Sharpest Rise in Poverty Rate in More Than 50 Years
Arguably yes. I'm not saying it's necessarily the world I would want to live in but I suspect the world's aggregate perceived level of happiness may be higher.
db579··on Ask HN: To which FOSS projects will you donate a little something?
Some projects I've donated to this year, either directly or via donating to their developers.

OpenStreetMap Wikipedia DAVx5 Jellyfin Mobian Thunderbird PureMaps Sequeler rust-gtk

db579··on Librem 5 Evergreen vs. Pinephone
It's only ~2.5x the cost of the Made in China version. I'm intrigued that you think it could be done for less?

Given that no one currently is and that the average salary in the US appears to be about double the average in China - that seems about right?

db579··on Librem 5 Evergreen vs. Pinephone
Because you have to start somewhere and by paying $2k today for a few screws inserted in the USA you hopefully prove the demand for full manufacturing to be supplied in the USA. And hopefully not just in the USA, centralising the entire worlds manufacturing capacity in one region is not particularly anti-fragile.
db579··on Show HN: CoScreen 1.0 – radically different pair/team programming
Are you able to give any rough indication of when a Linux client might be available? Are we talking months, years etc?

Also do you have a pricing strategy in mind yet for when this moves out of beta? (Sorry if I missed that on the site)

db579··on Apple Silicon M1: A Developer's Perspective
That's even worse. Accidentally disagreeing with my values would be one thing but doing it on purpose... beyond the pale!
