dbrian··on Tesla has created a customized insurance package
He is implying that the algorithms used by insurance companies are optimizing for profit instead of solely accessing the risk of payout. In other words, Tesla drivers are willing to pay a higher premium to mitigate the same risk.
dbrian··on Ask HN: What's the best way to learn about testing/TDD?

$20 billion in 2017 dollars
dbrian··on The Cloud Is Raining Cash on Amazon, Google, and Microsoft
What cloud platform services have they shutdown? Project churn in other parts of the business doesn't mean I shouldn't trust their container service or load balancers.
dbrian··on Ask HN: How do you deal with professional jealousy and getting older?
This is a very good list. I see huge differences in anxiety and productivity (time in the zone) based on diet and sleep.

I don't know.. people said the same thing when clock rates got close to 4Ghz. We always seem to find ways to work around physical limits.

dbrian··on Seagull – A friendly web UI to monitor a Docker daemon
Leave iptables on and port forward with SSH to localhost. Same thing people do with elasticsearch or other non-authenticated services.

These are early stage projects. The ones that stick around will get more enterprise-y over time.

dbrian··on A Conversation with Edward Snowden at HOPE X [video]
The two aren't mutually exclusive. He's kind of like Batman. He might operate outside of the law but he's a hero to the people and fights corruption in the system.
dbrian··on The Rise of the $8 Ice Cube
Adding a bit of water brings out flavors you don't experience neat. It's a personal preference.

HabitRPG works much the same way, tracking activities to form habits.

dbrian··on It’s impossible to work your way through college nowadays
I don't disagree with your point but we did give out $33b in Pell grants last year.
dbrian··on What if Apple bought Tesla?
iCar Mini?
dbrian··on This is a web page
But that's what minimalism is. You can say the same thing in reverse.. "If it doesn't give the audience more understanding - then leave it out."

dbrian··on Why high fructose corn syrup replaced sugar in US
He's not debating the cause of obesity. The linked article is about the economics of sweeteners in the US. It's about money not health.
dbrian··on Florida shortened yellow lights to increase red light camera revenue [video]
Maybe not in large cities with some sort of oversight but in small rural towns with only 2 or 3 cops, it helps pay for their jobs and keeps them employed.
dbrian··on Distributed Personal Wiki
I just keep a folder of markdown files in Dropbox. It syncs to all my devices and I can use any text editor.

You don't! See, it's two games in one.
dbrian··on LinkedIn: The Creepiest Social Network
Considering that, for years, Facebook had a universal password that would log you into anyone's account, I'd say that Google's standards are significantly higher than other players in the social sphere.

dbrian··on Show HN: I learned to code to launch my new startup
I did the same thing but it doesn't really matter. It's on the frontage which I'm sure was his goal. I'd say mission accomplished.
dbrian··on European startups: How not to raise capital in the US
> You probably haven’t gone to Stanford and MIT. > You probably didn't work in a major successful US startup. > You probably don’t have many mutual connections with the investor.

dbrian··on Tesla Model S Suspension Walkaround
Definitely not the same crowd. It's still a 4 door sedan. They're competing against the Panamera not the GT3.
dbrian··on Netflix loses 1,794 videos from its streaming catalog
Even if all the different services worked on all your devices, searching through different apps is already a pain. I don't keep track of who owns what content. How are consumers suppose to know which app to search in when looking for a movie?
dbrian··on Google+ Is Outpacing Twitter
Just group people in circles and read the one you want.
dbrian··on Google offers clearer search labels after EU probe
