ddelony··on The Newer Hacker's Dictionary
It's a fork. ESR's still the "official" maintainer, but no one truly owns hacker culture.
ddelony··on What “Worse is Better vs The Right Thing” is really about
Also, the Web. One of the main reasons Xanadu's in development hell is how it tries to handle broken links. On the Web, the browsers just throw up a 404 error. This is unacceptable for Ted Nelson.
ddelony··on Hate Mail and the New Religious Wars in Tech
The topic that inspires the most vitriol by far is anything to do with Israel or Palestine. The comments on any YouTube video or nasty even by YouTube comment standards.
ddelony··on Hate Mail and the New Religious Wars in Tech
Some advice from an old journalism professor of mine: no matter what anyone else says or does, just smile and says "Thanks for letting me know how you feel!" It's a difficult person disarming tactic.
ddelony··on Why I Left Perl
I think every programming language has a preferred way of doing things. Every profession also has a preferred way of doing things. For example, as a professional writer, I can site the AP Stylebook, Strunk & White, the Chicago Manual of Style.

Work doesn't happen in a vacuum, and when you're dealing with other people, some kind of standard is necessary, even if it does seem a little annoying at times.

ddelony··on How Reddit went from a second-tier aggregator to the Web’s unstoppable force
Reddit is a spiritual successor to Usenet, with all the good and bad that entails.
ddelony··on Ivo – a reimagined Unix terminal system
Acme seems to come pretty close to the author's idea, combining both a terminal and an editor.
ddelony··on If You’re Busy, You’re Doing Something Wrong
Creative work seems to happen in short bursts. Along with a lot of other writers, I like working in short, intense bursts, especially in the mornings.
ddelony··on Whatever works
As C2 puts it, "Do the simplest thing that could possibly work."

ddelony··on Codify: native coding environment for iPad
How long until Apple shuts it down for using a language other than Objective-C?
ddelony··on What Your Old Graphing Calculator Says About Technology
Real Engineers use Curtas!
ddelony··on How not to handle open source feedback
Many eyes make bugs shallow, because they simply ignore them.
ddelony··on Comcast cuts off customer for going over 250GB of legitimate use
I'm surprised no one's noticed all the conspiracy theories mentioned on the main site.
ddelony··on Bell System Technical Journal, 1922-1983
The classic issue devoted to Unix (scroll down to the bottom): http://www.alcatel-lucent.com/bstj/vol57-1978/bstj-vol57-iss...
ddelony··on Kevin Rose Resigns From Digg, Closing Round On New Startup
If there are "multiple sources", wouldn't it be possible to name them?
ddelony··on The Anti-Mac User Interface
I wonder how close Mac OS X comes to the Anti-Mac interface, given that it includes a command line.
ddelony··on Unix for Poets
This article shows why Unix might be the greatest word processor ever invented.
ddelony··on Standing In The Unemployment Line? Startup Hour.ly Might Have Work For You.
This is exactly the kind of site I've been looking for as a freelance writer. A place like Mechanical Turk that lets me do short tasks, but actually pays something.
ddelony··on iPhoto 11 upgrade problems
A software program having a bug is news?
ddelony··on What should every programmer know about programming?
On writing concurrent programs: Why don't we make the interpreters/compilers do that automatically?
ddelony··on Two Must-Have Tools for a More Readable Web
Modern Web design seems to focus too much on pretty visual designs. I think that designers should pay more attention to structure, like the original Gopher menus.

One of the major reasons Apple's App Store has taken off is that most Web designs are pretty, but optimized for big screens. They're awkward to look it on small devices like the iPhone. Simple design degrades gracefully.

ddelony··on Basic Command-Line Data Processing in Linux
Hacker News readers probably have at least a passing familiarity with Unix/Linux, but it's still refreshing to be reminded that you can move mountains with short commands.
ddelony··on How to help someone use a computer
The police found him and claim he's "in good health and self-sufficient" though his friends and colleagues are still looking for him. http://www.npr.org/blogs/alltechconsidered/2010/01/missing_i...

He's written a lot of good stuff, though.

ddelony··on How to help someone use a computer
Yeah, I probably should have done a search first. ;-) But the post about social problems in computing reminded me of this article.
ddelony··on Why social media gurus should be trampled by elephants
If your site causes other sites to crash, you know you've made it!
ddelony··on How the engineer driven culture at Google damaged Wave
I have enormous respect for Bell Labs, at least until they decided to kill non telecommunications projects.
ddelony··on Rate my startup: SolidComposer - version control for musicians
Great idea, even though I'm not a musician. What I'd really like to see would be a completely versioned filesystem like on VMS.
ddelony··on How the engineer driven culture at Google damaged Wave
I'm not knocking Google in any way. It's just that, as the article says, Google seems to be developing their new products because thee engineers think they're cool, regardless of whether they're actually commercial. In this way, Google is the Bell Labs of the 21st century.
ddelony··on How the engineer driven culture at Google damaged Wave
Google's non-search products are really just research projects.
ddelony··on Paul Graham and his "no asshole" rule (Interview)
Does she have some specific criteria, or is it like the infamous Supreme Court definition of pornography? ;-)
