deadfish··on How French was medieval England?
I learnt the word beeves while reading the Doctrine (the PHP ORM) codebase. I assume it was in case someone had an entity called beef... So the collection would be beeves :) I wonder if anyone ever used Doctrine and had an entity called beef.
deadfish··on James Webb Space Telescope captures high-resolution image of Uranus
The first contact from aliens will surely be them exploiting this with an XSS attack to set window.location to a Rick Roll video.
deadfish··on UK government surveilling social media of teaching assistants
No need for hope. At this point surely it is a given?
deadfish··on UK air traffic control meltdown
Pretty sure that is still not the meaning of refactoring. As I understand it refactoring should mean no changes to the external interface but changes to how it is implemented internally.
deadfish··on Evergrande shares plunge as much as 87% as trading resumes after 17 months
I believe it is because the will get delisted if they are not trading for 18 months and they have not been trading for 17 months at this point.
deadfish··on The Ethereum merge is done
An electric heater runs current through a wire .. the waste product of doing so is heat. The more you 'waste' the more heat produced.

I guess the more efficient version of the same thing would be the move to using heat pumps.

deadfish··on Apple acquires UK open banking startup Credit Kudos
If I were them I would be more concerned by Revolut, Monzo, Starling and Atom than Apple.
deadfish··on EU drafts plan to label gas and nuclear investments as green
Looks like the cost of nuclear in Australia is not comparable.

deadfish··on Internet Object – A JSON alternative data serialization format
I see a benchmark for the data size... But as other comments have suggested gzip should remove the majority of that difference.

I'd be more interested to know about serialisation and deserialisation time.

deadfish··on Bitcoin’s first day as El Salvador’s legal tender
Not that I don't agree with a lot of what you are saying, but I think despite being digital crypto is a lot more like cash than card payments. But cash also has 'no rollback, no fraud detection or insurance'. At least you are don't have the risk of counterfeit notes.
deadfish··on The bargain at the heart of the BBC is fraying
I worked on a project a while back called Freeview play in the UK which I think works in a similar way to how you described. You can watch live TV over the air or scroll backwards in time along the EPG to stream recorded content over IP.

I think the BBCs childrens content is one of its strongest assets. I don't have any data for it, but I would say most families in the UK with small kids consume a lot of CBBC and CBeebies content. It's much better quality content than children's content on YouTube or Netflix.

Peoples viewing habits are more fragmented and from a wider variety of sources than 10 or 20 years ago and the BBC definitely doesn't have the same mindshare that it used to have when there was only X channels. But, I think when people are looking for some high quality curated content in the sea of 'please like and subscribe' then they will come back to iPlayer - I know I do.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part?

deadfish··on Protect student privacy: ban eproctoring
Massive failure to not have "What is Eproctoring" as the first section of the page.

deadfish··on How to buy gifts that people actually want
As an adult I find the gifts that I appreciate most are the luxury versions of simple useful things.

If I wanted aftershave, chocolate, socks, a phone, a laptop (insert any other typical gift here) I would have bought them.

I would not have bought harrods teabags or a cashmere scarf... but everytime I use them they make me smile.

deadfish··on Huawei 5G kit must be removed from UK by 2027
You can leave China. There are millions of Chinese nationals living overseas.
deadfish··on Facebook to Let Users Rank Credibility of News
Surely the problem is the lack of a dislike button?

I wonder if Reddit has as much fake news as Facebook?

deadfish··on “Make Our Planet Great Again”
Yeah. I don't quite understand how that relates to the environment. Seems more like 'Make France great again' under the guise of 'Make our planet great again'
deadfish··on Xiaomi unveils concept phone with near bezel-less display
I once owned Xiaomi mi2 (their second phone) and the usb socket melted when charging. After I posted it on Chinese twitter they were quick to offer a refund.

I hope their quality has improved since then. I guess at least the battery didn't explode :D

deadfish··on 16-year-old British girl earns £48,000 helping Chinese people name their babies
I used to live in China and met some students with very unusual English names. My favourite of which was 'Finger'. When I asked him why he chose the name he answered 'I like Kurt Cobain and he played the guitar with his finger'. Not sure what was wrong with Kurt.
deadfish··on Reality Check: Have Leave campaigners changed their minds?
Boris was only in it to become PM. In the metro yesterday Boris was quoted as to saying "the 'only change' the public would see post-brexit was greater control of uk laws".

Even farage has his doubts - https://youtu.be/WrAHJ9fDHUU?t=384

deadfish··on Petition for London independence signed by thousands after Brexit vote
Not strictly true. The 'City of London' (not to be confused with London) is and has always been its own country.

Whilst the argument is for all of London to be independent. It would surely be possible for the 'City of London' to remain in the EU.

deadfish··on Why Obama did not stop NSA domestic surveillance
Why definitely?

If it was truly hidden from him... then who is to say he has the power to stop it?

deadfish··on London garden bridge users to have mobile phone signals tracked
It would probably be deemed 'commercially sensitive'. I sent a FOI to my university and that was what they used to get out of it.
deadfish··on Deepart.io – Generate images styled like your favorite artist
Did you ever try with a g2.8xlarge instance? 600px seems a little low res for printing.
deadfish··on How New Long-Range Radios Will Change the Internet of Things
Sigfox is being used in the roll out of smart gas/electricity meters in the north of England/Scotland. Unfortunately Telefonica won the south any they will use the GSM network.
deadfish··on Have I been pwned? Check if you have an account that has been compromised
