I'm flagging anything I see that is uncivil, especially if your account was created after March 2020.

My username can be a mac address. That makes me giggle.

dec0dedab0de··on WTF Ubuntu?
Just that it’s already installed, and I haven’t tried a new distro in over a decade.

But 15-20 years ago it was easier to install the nonfree stuff on ubuntu, like drivers and DVD playback and stuff. I don’t know if its still like that.

I never understood ubuntu as a server over debian, but for a desktop it was a nicer experience for a while.

dec0dedab0de··on The Real Kevin Bacon
I liked the presentation, and thought it was worth it.
dec0dedab0de··on The Real Kevin Bacon
I hope Kevin bacon takes this as a personal attack and manages to get small roles in every upcoming film that has actors he hasn’t worked with yet.
dec0dedab0de··on Most advice is right for the person giving it
Is it just me, or is this just an ad with a headline that is trying to make common sense sound profound?
dec0dedab0de··on Things to know when you get cancer
Things that helped me the most are a camping spice shaker, a long flat hdmi cable, and a roll of painters tape.

The spice shaker had like 6 spices, and really helped the hospital food. The cable and tape helped me plug in my laptop and switch without having to get up during chemo which was kind of painful.

dec0dedab0de··on I Found a $90k Remote Code Execution Vulnerability in Google
pickle is nuts, but I can imagine dumping an entire object into the cookie while troubleshooting something then forgetting to clean it up afterwards.
dec0dedab0de··on `123456' password used in Danish CPR data breach
I don’t normally upvote jokes on hn, but it’s saturday and I was about to say the same thing.
dec0dedab0de··on 4-hour battery storage is cheaper to install than gas turbines all across globe
No, I'm saying that using a gas generator as a backup for solar is better than not using solar at all.
dec0dedab0de··on 4-hour battery storage is cheaper to install than gas turbines all across globe
Still significantly better than running everything on fossil fuels burned by the power company.
dec0dedab0de··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
If we had a union we would be training people from customer support to engineer.

I truly believe that software would be improved immensely if all developers spent a few years doing tech support for the elderly.

dec0dedab0de··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
Over a decade ago someone on here commented that H1B1 visas should goto the highest paying jobs requested instead of random or whatever it was.

At the time we all saw the H1B1 program as a way for companies to hire cheaper labor that they can treat poorly.

dec0dedab0de··on Show HN: Bigwords.page – Turn any screen into a sign. The URL is the app
I thought they meant the outputted javascript is embedded in the url, like a bookmarklet. But looking closer, it clearly isn't.
dec0dedab0de··on JetBrains reported a net financial loss first time in its tracked history
Hopefully they're investing in better llm integration. I really want to automatically use the jetbrains diff for every llm code change locally.

I also want to have the jetbrains code quality scans automatically ran and fixed, and maybe something that enforces permissions and a sandbox. Basically I want the IDE to be more of a control interface.

dec0dedab0de··on The Philadelphia Inquirer built Scrape, an AI tool to surface hyperlocal news
I'm still annoyed at them for shutting down philly.com
dec0dedab0de··on Vote on which of Hacker News' challenges for AI have been met
Has anyone done Roschach tests for AI? That would be an interesting study to see how different models responded.
dec0dedab0de··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I remember alcohol being present at all those places since the 80s.
dec0dedab0de··on Unsurprisingly, Meta's new Muse AI agent blatantly ignores users permissions
I think we need more granular permissions, and built in ways to trick apps into thinking they have permissions they do not.
dec0dedab0de··on Small programming tricks
I was my most effective when I had a bunch of cheat sheets taped up in my workspace.
dec0dedab0de··on The shrinking landscape of linguistic diversity in the age of LLMs
If this happened, you didn't put in the effort to learn to speak Vietnamese well enough. Or she didn't speak your language well enough.

Isn’t that the point they were trying to make?

dec0dedab0de··on DIY – Build a Potato Box (2022)
I did it by stacking old tires a few times. It looked cool, but was probably not very healthy.

dec0dedab0de··on Htmx 4.0
I really like htmx, and intercooler.js before it. It's been a while since I tried to convince a co-worker to use it, it might be time to try again. Either way I can't wait to try out the new version.

Full Disclosure, I am CEO of HTMX

dec0dedab0de··on The Twelve-Factor App (2025)
I think backing services as attached resources was opposed to the practice of having your DB, and cache, and whatnot managed and maintained by a completely separate team and not really treated as part of the application. Even the schema changes.

The port binding was really a response to tomcat or modphp being modules in the webserver, as opposed to hosting their own web service internally. This was before nginx took off, and proxying to internal application ports was common.

edit:

I was wrong about the backing services, it seems it is really about treating them as configurations and being able to swap them out without making code changes.

dec0dedab0de··on The Twelve-Factor App (2025)
Heroku seemed like it was going to be the future back then. Every time I find myself struggling to understand some nonsense in Azure I dream of the simpler future we lost.
dec0dedab0de··on Xcancel and Nitter have been taken down
If AI really is democratizing technology, it won’t be long before we get back to everyone having a personal website.

I remember blowing everyone’s mind when i wrote a php script to scrape my bands myspace to keep our website up to date with show details. It was like a magic trick.

That sort of power is in the hands of the masses now, they just don’t know it yet.

dec0dedab0de··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
* If you're lucky enough to have had rich enough parents to not have to worry about money too much, yes, you'll probably optimize for doing things you enjoy, but people who spend a lot of their younger years with money issues will sometimes obsess about it and really focus their lives around 'getting rich'.*

I think you’re in the right ballpark, and I have seen it play out exactly that. However, I think it is even more common for rich kids to obsess about getting richer.

In my experience, as long as their needs are being met, most people get used to whatever lifestyle they are raised in, and stick with it. if they grew up in a family that chases wealth, and equates income with self worth, then they tend to keep doing that.
