decremental··on Zuckerberg Caught in Revealing Hot Mic Moment During White House Dinner
When my guy is in office it's good and normal. When their guy is in office it's bad.
decremental··on Websites and web developers mostly don't care about client-side problems
It's not that website owners don't care that they're frustrating users, losing visitors and customers, or creating a poor experience. It's an intractable problem for most website owners to combat the endless ways that their sites are being botted and bogged down, and having to pay for resources to handle the 98% of traffic their sites are getting that isn't coming from real users and customers. By all means, solve it and everyone will be happy.
decremental··on EU age verification app to ban any Android system not licensed by Google
From the telegraph.co.uk: "Elite police unit to monitor online critics of migrants" and there are people worried about the "political climate" in the US lmao
decremental··on I extracted the safety filters from Apple Intelligence models
You say that as if it stands as truth on its own. We actually don't need to filter out how people actually talk and think. Otherwise you just end up with yet another enforcer against wrong-think. I wonder if you even think that deeply about it or if you're just wired at this point to conform.
decremental··on US pauses new student visa interviews as it mulls expanding social media vetting
Yeah the government shouldn't care at all what these foreign nationals might be saying on the internet before letting them into our country.
decremental··on Sycophancy in GPT-4o
This is what the kids call cope.
decremental··on Woman who tricked her way into men-only Magic Circle allowed in
RIP that friend group. Once women get involved in a men's only space it destroys that dynamic forever. Nothing but trouble can come from this.
decremental··on Hyperscaling Have I Been Pwned with Cloudflare Workers and Caching
HN skews heavily towards users with very unusual setups. Using one of the least popular browsers on an OS almost no one in the grand scheme of things uses makes you a statistical outlier on its own. Who knows what other obscure configuration choices could be making the problem even worse for such a user?

But yeah, it's none of that just Cloudflare hates brown people or something.

decremental··on Arroyo (YC W23) has been acquired by Cloudflare
I downgraded a $250/mo plan but it bugged out, re-added it to my account, and charged me. Couldn't remove it. Contacted support and after a month of no response they closed the ticket.

Created another ticket. After a week they apologized and said something about having a very high volume of support requests.

decremental··on Stripe adds yet another additional $15 dispute fee, unless you use their AI
Chargeback early warning ends this month. It won't be a thing going forward. (Might just be applicable to Visa)
decremental··on CSS Custom Functions are coming
The syntax might kind of suck but this will actually be very useful to have.
decremental··on Apple says it will add 20k jobs, spend $500B, produce AI servers in US
He won the popular vote. His base is the majority of Americans lol
decremental··on Critics say new Google rules put profits over privacy
It's common for people to say things like that and throw in the phrase fiduciary duty. That's what's being referenced here.
decremental··on CA Teenager Sentenced to 48 Months in Prison for Nationwide Swatting Spree
48 months for 375 attempted murders isn't exactly getting the book thrown at you. It should have been life.
decremental··on South Korean president declares martial law, parliament votes to lift it
This article reeks to high hell of the regime propaganda writing we see about domestic politics:

"Yoon — whose approval rating has dipped in recent months — has struggled to push his agenda against an opposition-controlled parliament since taking office in 2022.

Yoon’s conservative People Power Party had been locked in an impasse with the liberal opposition Democratic Party over next year’s budget bill. He has also been dismissing calls for independent investigations into scandals involving his wife and top officials, drawing quick, strong rebukes from his political rivals."

See the same patterns. You can tell which side they want to paint in a bad light and what do you know it's the conservative side.

decremental··on Microsoft Recall is now an explorer.exe dependency
You'd think a bunch of javascript programmers I mean hackers would know better.
decremental··on Ask HN: How do you manage registration spam?
Use Cloudflare's Turnstile captcha. It's leagues ahead of Google's or hCaptcha. Users never have to click on stupid images, and it works great. You're not going to be able to stop people manually signing up but depending on how they're doing it, you might curb some of it.

These guys have loads of email addresses and can just use a VPN to switch to a new IP in seconds. Often accompanied with a completely fresh browser session that you're going to have a hard or impossible time correlating with past attempts.

Parse the domain portion of the email address and check that against a blacklist of throwaway and fishy email domains. Manually blacklist domains as needed. You can find blacklists hosted on GitHub. Use the Public Suffix List to parse the domain to make sure you don't accidentally ban an entire obscure TLD. Parse down the email domain to remove any subdomain when checking against the blacklist.

If you're really serious, you can use an API provided by SendGrid to check for suspicious email addresses. You can also look into MaxMind minFraud.

Ban IP addresses. Not every spammer is highly sophisticated and sometimes a single, fixed IP will be responsible for many spam attempts spanning months at a time.

Devise a way to fingerprint browers. This can be as simple as a random hash set to some innocuous cookie name. Ban offenders by those too. It's not always going to work but a lot of spammers aren't terribly sophisticated and you'll be able to catch them even if they're IP hopping.

decremental··on OpenAI threatens to revoke o1 access for asking it about its chain of thought
The real danger of an advanced artificial intelligence is that it will make conclusions that regular people understand but are inconvenient for the regime. The AI must be aligned so that it will maintain the lies that people are supposed to go along with.
decremental··on Signals for Tailwind CSS (styling based on ancestor state via style queries)
Reminds me of a common complaint about ORMs. The easy stuff is easy and the hard stuff is insanely hard.

This recent post convinced me to just use CSS again: https://dev.37signals.com/modern-css-patterns-and-techniques...

decremental··on Starlink will now be free in Brazil since remote hospitals, schools use it: Musk
Good move, Elon. Very cool
decremental··on Microsoft formally deprecates the Windows Control Panel
My Windows 11 taskbar looks just how I liked it on Windows 10 and prior. Adjust your settings.
decremental··on Why won't some people pay for news? (2022)
Yeah NPR and Fox are the same degree of biased. It's just harder for people to tell that NPR is biased because its bias is aligned better with the liberal regimes of most western countries. If the regime in your country was right leaning, you'd see most media display that bias and NPR would be your go-to example of something unhinged and biased.

Most left leaning people can't even tell when they're watching something biased towards their beliefs because to them it's just like a fish swimming in water.

decremental··on TikTok collected US user views on issues like abortion and gun control
There's really no excuse for this level of naivete anymore.
decremental··on E.U. Censorship Laws Mostly Suppress Legal Speech
Europe's idea of conservative is what Americans would call far left. It's all relative anyway. If you're just trying to conserve something left wing against something even farther left wing then it's still left. Mostly meaningless label. Almost no one even knows where the political terms left and right came from. People call Afghanistan right wing as if that means something.
decremental··on Hotwire: HTML Over The Wire
The fucking article
decremental··on Majority of Americans wrongly believe US is in recession – and most blame Biden
It's because people remember having more money and paying less for things under Trump and they are currently living under the opposite of that.
decremental··on Beach erosion will make Southern Cal. coastal living 5* more expensive by 2050
Maybe when the ultra rich that preach about climate change stop buying islands and beach front property.
decremental··on One-third of Amazon warehouse workers are on food stamps or Medicaid
