deepstack··on Home ownership is the West’s biggest economic-policy mistake
Upvote!

Private property ownership and intergenerational wealth transfer is the foundation of middle class, and bigger middle class leads to better education for the masses, and a more democratic society!

deepstack··on Large-Scale Abuse of Contact Discovery in Mobile Messengers [pdf]
Wire is not for people to leave message unread for 3 months. Most user can deal with that. And once it is read. You can archive your message on to a file (and then put on USB). For most users, why use anything else?

For those who like to leave your message unread on the server for up to a year, then go with signal or telegram.

deepstack··on Unsettling capital letters
There is also a book about speed reading, where you can skip some words and still understand the sentence.
deepstack··on PHP in 2021
> PHP has astounding longevity. In maintaining my personal websites (static pages, web toys, projects with my writing groups), I always ask myself: how will I keep this running in 20 years? PHP originally stands for Person Home Page. really!
deepstack··on Europe eyes strict rules for artificial intelligence
> Is this about the AI or about the use of regular technology that could hurt citizens

I would think the intend is about technology that could hurt citizens. More like responsible use of technologies. As a tech I support this kind of initiative. Anything allows software to identify person become a slippery slop to totalitarian government (in this day and age it won't just be government, also include trans-nation corporations).

deepstack··on The war against money-laundering is being lost
> The DOJ (and perhaps similarly in GB?) has repeatedly preferred to prosecute white collar crimes seeking fines instead of jail time

The fine just became a cost of doing business for the banks and corps, and a funding the gov budget, truly a vicious cycle.

deepstack··on Kaboom – JavaScript game programming library and environment
Maybe try little javascripter would be good for your kid. https://www.crockford.com/little.html
deepstack··on Docker without Docker
> AWS wrote Firecracker to run Fargate thank you for mention that. Which projects like Firecracker, it really doesn't make sense to have Docker.
deepstack··on Israel may have achieved herd immunity against Covid-19
>The vaccine may be effective against currently known strains but nothing says it is going to be effective against future ones.

It is true. Wonder if vaccine is the only way against COVID?

deepstack··on Stop Spotify Surveillance
I can understand that. In many ways people become rely on this big Internet "Database" to hear and listen to things. However, companies runs Internet become more censored and surveilled. Disk and USB space are cheap, it is a good idea to start archiving and collecting things where you can play without Internet.
deepstack··on Stop Spotify Surveillance
Likewise. It it also annoying whenever you go some where people ask oh is it on Spotify or Youtube?
deepstack··on Stop Spotify Surveillance
It is fair to say that. However, why do we still use use large social media/ad platforms?

Time to support and use alternative, free/libra, self-hosted solutions. https://funkwhale.audio is one off top of my head for Spotfiy.

deepstack··on Facebook does not plan to notify half-billion users affected by data leak
They are subsidized. Stock may not be best indication of the performance of the company.
deepstack··on 7% of Americans don’t use the internet. Who are they?
Not really. It is like an addiction, however after not being on the internet for sometime one become more appreciative of things around and local stuff. High recommend tech people try it if opportunity arises.
deepstack··on Is it true? Can Covid-19 vaccines connect me to the internet?
Well, we can already use fMRI (maybe EEG as well) or PET scan to read the structure of people's thoughts. And researchers already have done BrainNet, A Multi-Person Brain-to-Brain Interface https://arxiv.org/abs/1809.08632

Science doesn't stay still. Given these it is no surprise that lay person think that this is possible.

deepstack··on 7% of Americans don’t use the internet. Who are they?
> Local social life was fantastic- I missed nothing about the internet.

In general after decades of working with Internet and technology, I realize that I enjoy life (not work) better when there is no Internet. Of course, it is nice to have Internet to have occasional communication with friends and family not in the surrounding area.

deepstack··on The Facebook phone numbers are now searchable in Have I Been Pwned
Yeah these companies that rely on user data will NEVER delete your data once you submit it to them (regardless if they say your data is deleted or account closed). For company like FB you are the product.
deepstack··on Leaked phone number of Mark Zuckerberg reveals he is on Signal
https://app.wire.com already has that feature and it is based on signal protocol.
deepstack··on Google will stop using Oracle’s finance software and adopt SAP instead
hmmm wonder why wouldn't google just roll their own.
deepstack··on Comparing Svelte and React
The main reason people started using React is the JSX implementation in React at the time was very innovative. Actually many people working with Rihno in 2006 has talked about using JSX as templating system. FB is just the first one did it. However, now days there are plenty other less bloated front end frame work such as svelte, vue, mithrill that is more easy to use and have JSX support as well. There is really no reason to use React now days.
deepstack··on The dispassionate developer
>I almost feel like that companies of a certain scale should be charged a licence to use OSS software and that money should be re-distributed As far as I'm concerned, FANNG companies (plus MS ) ought to treated differently than other companies. As they are quasi gov-entities getting subsidies from government contracts and use security market to leverage money. I mean Windows is still using the FreeBSD network stack for all these years.
deepstack··on How to create a 1M record table with a single query
use a sequence or uuid
deepstack··on Closing web browser windows doesn't close connections
have you seen https://www.nothingprivate.ml tech and internet are more hostile now days. company like google/fb will do anything to get user info legally or illegally, as the fine for bad behavior is usually slap on wrist.
deepstack··on Cold Fusion or Low-Energy Nuclear Reactions, U.S. Navy Researchers Reopen Case
This is interesting development. Back then when Pons and Fleischmann first came out with this in 89, they were heavily ridiculed ( or smeared) by main stream academics like MIT. It also turns out MIT has received a lot of money to do hot fusion research. Wouldn't be the first time that interests of funding interfered with science.
deepstack··on NSA Issues Guidance on Zero Trust Security Model
Exactly. Instead of putting backdoor in only the computer going to China, why not just install back door in ALL the chips. Cheaper too. At this point, it won't surprise if all the computer has a hard ware level backdoor such as spectr/meldown. Not to mention encryption backdoor. Even state level player doesn't have the resources to take all that out. Remember when Snowden leak came out, Russian gov switched all internal memo to typewriters that shall give you an idea.
deepstack··on Dear Young Artist [pdf]
>To me this missive reads as a response to some specific questions. It would have been nice to know what those questions were.

As a lay person, it is easy to guess is buying and selling of art in the art world is filled with dirty money/money laundering. If you make a visit to art museums in New York, often if you have business card from one of investment banks, you get to go in admission free, it is because art museums are heavily funded by people from wall street. Not to say that everyone works at wall street are people without integrity, but you get the general idea.

deepstack··on Firefox 87 trims HTTP Referrers by default to protect user privacy
Good for firefox. although I can see how this may break vimeo kind of service that only allow embedding video from certain web site.
deepstack··on NASA completes engine test firing of moon rocket on 2nd try
>These companies have perfected the art of milking the taxpayer

Glad some one said something about this. It seems like public and private sector has some how magically merged in US. Shall we remind what happens when you privatize some thing public like prison.

deepstack··on Richard Stallman is coming back to the board of the FSF
return of jedi
deepstack··on Out of prison after 30 years and people telling him to find forms on the web
You are right. Most security are really depending on banks whether they operate with integrity and your relationship with them. For security get to know your banker. And I wouldn't recommend any of large banks. Local credit union and small bank with good balance sheet are better bet.
