demoo··on Aldi, a brutally efficient grocery chain, is upending America's supermarkets
Got a friend who is overseeing manager of about 5-6 Aldi supermarkets in my area.

At the end of every day, every supermarket calls him with the daily results. He writes them down, takes a picture and sends that to his manager at the national HQ.

He just uses his phone and the occasional meeting to do business, there is no computer/laptop or system on his end.

Aldi is always portrayed as brutally efficient. So I was wondering what to read into this. Best I was able to come up with is that it's cheaper for them not to have an overseeing system to manage this.

demoo··on Amazon to acquire video doorbell maker Ring
Interested how this plays into the best in class vision that Amazon pursues.

Does this acquisition allows them to take their Amazon Key service (Cloud Cam + service + tech) to the next level?

demoo··on Mark Zuckerberg's manifesto for Facebook offers a social dystopia
There is no sign of average revenue per user decreasing. Even in US & Canada, ARPU increased from $13.7 in Q4 2015 to $19.81 in Q4 2016 [1].

demoo··on Docracy Terms of Service Tracker
Let's say I have a url of a certain file, how would I go about to compare and highlight the changes (in an automated way)?
demoo··on Use Adwords to find the best title for your Hacker News post
If that is a screenshot of the experiment you were running, you just wasted $70. None of those differences is statistically better than the other one.

If you got benefit out of being #2 on HN, good for you, just say so.

demoo··on Office 2013: Microsoft's bid to win the future
Any news about Outlooks rendering engine yet? I hope the integration of Office 365 made them adopt webkit vs Word.
demoo··on Microsoft Introduces New "Surface" Tablet
Is the OS for this Windows 8 or modified Windows Phone?
demoo··on Facebook 'boring'? 1 in 3 users are tuning it out
The interesting part is the information below the graph: most searches in Turkey, Venezuela, Colombia, Malaysia, Italy, Croatia, Indonesia. Africa nowhere to be seen though.
demoo··on Confirmed: SpaceX Dragon Ferried ‘Scotty’s’ Remains Into Space
Multiple revenue sources!
demoo··on Chinese SSD offers mission impossible style self destruction
This movie clip feels like it could be featured in a dystopian sci-fi movie in which a big corporation has all the power. Just waiting for Deckard to walk by a billboard and see this playing.
demoo··on Quora's $50 million
Where is the money to be made?
demoo··on Google Drive
The fact that they charge for Drive and not G+ doesn't imply that Drive is more important than G+. Looking at everything they have the last couple of months I would argue it is in fact the other way around. Although longer term and not direct revenue, G+ (and it's ad possibilities) is more valuable to them.
demoo··on Looks Like Zynga Just Bought OMGPOP For $200 Million
There will be plenty of places to cross promote their games. I'm thinking loading screens, contacts database,..
demoo··on Amazon acquiring Kiva Systems for $775 million
I don't know the exact situation of Google's server warehouse design. But I presume that was developed in-house. Kiva already has other big customers that rely on it for their order fulfillment. Like said in this thread, making your competitors into customers is a smart move.
demoo··on Amazon acquiring Kiva Systems for $775 million
To me this is another piece of scalable infrastructure they can offer to other companies.
demoo··on How I built a startup while working full-time in Finance
Congrats on getting your product out there!

>Surround yourself with smart people always. I've been struggling with this one for a while. I've cut time drains and people that keep me down, how to go the next step?

demoo··on The all-new Basecamp is live
No CSS buttons!
demoo··on Did Mark Zuckerberg just accidentally leak the new newsfeed design?
Should have used the image enhancement software that people use in the movies, hard to see anything now.
demoo··on Netflix is down 37%
Sales up by 50%, subscribers down by 3%.

Not a bad deal, reputation damage aside.

demoo··on Apple upgrades MacBook Pro line with faster processors, gfx cards, more storage
Extending the MBA line was the first move. It will take at least 2 more overhauls (not CPU upgrades) for the product lines to merge completely.
demoo··on Give this company a child's drawing and they'll make it into a stuffed toy
Heartwarming :)

Reminds me of My Machine, an organization that takes children drawings of machines and make them come to live.

demoo··on Daring Fireball: Universe Dented, Grass Underfoot
Very nice post. Reading through the comments brought this back to me:

You could do Richard Branson's job. Most of the time anyway.

Except for what he does for about five minutes a day. In those five minutes, he creates billions of dollars' worth of value every few years, and neither you nor I would have a prayer of doing what he does. Branson's real job is seeing new opportunities, making decisions that work, and understanding the connection between his audience, his brand, and his ventures.

demoo··on Reed Hastings responds to criticisms and announces Qwikster
Must have been a though move to make.

Renting out DVDs is a different business model and one that will be obsolete in 2-3 years. Putting DVD rental prepares them for a future where they can fade out or sell the DVD business and go abroad with a simple offer for the Netflix brand.

demoo··on It’s Official: HP Kills Off webOS Phones and the TouchPad
The iPad and iPod were indeed more of a catch-up game for competitors. The iPhone on the other hand already had some established competition.
demoo··on It’s Official: HP Kills Off webOS Phones and the TouchPad
(x) make it a branded, hard-to-copy ingredient of your product
demoo··on Amazon rolls out a social network for Kindle
Seeing which parts others liked and highlighted, the digital equivalent of dog-earing, gives a nice extra touch to my reading experience.
demoo··on Ask HN: 301 redirects bad for SERP ranking?
With 301s the search engine juice flows to the redirected pages.
demoo··on Living in the zone
Maybe it is because I'm not a real coder, but whenever I'm working on some project (usually front-end web design) I find myself checking resources and other code examples often.

How do you guys deal with these while 'in the zone'? Got a book or notes lying around? Or are visiting the web/irc to get unstuck?

demoo··on There's no place like home
It depends where you go and what people you hang around with. If they don't talk English there is only one way: learn the local language. I lived in Brazil in a small town and every small interaction forced me to speak a little bit of Portuguese. After two months I knew how to get around and talk to people. I had learned Spanish before but still, if you haven't got an option BUT learn the language, you will manage.
demoo··on There's no place like home
I've lived most of my live in Belgium, with mum and dad living apart. Home was the house I was living in that week.

I've also lived for longer periods of time (over a year) in Greece and Brazil. At first, home is the place you've left behind and all the people that live there. But then as you spend more time on your new location and get your life sorted there (things like local friends, language, culture), it starts feeling like home.

Leaving that place again is where it gets really hard. You leave your new home and go back to your old one, which feels different.

But in the end you have familiar places and faces where ever you leave, a home to come back to.
