dev_daftly··on Red Hat Is Not Linux (2000)
You're understanding of what RHEL is seems to be off. Basically the current pipeline is Fedora->CentOS Stream->RHEL or CentOS Stream -> Fedora, RHEL. The downstream from redhat distros (centos, rocky, alma) were just recompiling the same packages as rhel and claiming 1:1 bug compatibility, which is a claim that might not even be true. They were able to do this because RHEL used to publish the packages that made up the distro to the public, but now they are only doing that for their customers. Everything that exists inside RHEL is available through centOS stream, the issue for the clones is that there also exists some changes that have not been added to RHEL yet.

Ultimately, the issue is RedHat thinks people should be using centOS stream if they don't need enterprise support and a significant part of the community just want RHEL but free.

I'm pretty sure opensuse is upstream from sles and probably closer to fedora than centos stream.
dev_daftly··on Keeping Open Source Open
At that point, why wouldn't the user just be using centos stream?
dev_daftly··on Why don’t more people live close to friends?
But the issue also exists in dense areas of Chicago where things aren't far, they are just laid out in a way that doesn't really allow for the same environment as traditional European cities
dev_daftly··on Why don’t more people live close to friends?
Exactly, even the areas with the most density in America don't feel the same because of poor zoning laws mostly prohibiting mixed-use areas. The problem with the US is urban planners(is there a single new walkable city since urban planners became a thing?) not density.
dev_daftly··on Why don’t more people live close to friends?
The densest cities in the world have no high-rises.
dev_daftly··on Why don’t more people live close to friends?
It has nothing to do with "car centric" zoning or bans on density. It's poor zoning policies that split sections by use case. Walk through a more "residential" are in Vienna and there are still commercial/restaurants throughout the neighborhood. Do the same in Chicago and besides a few strips of the neighborhood you won't find anything besides residential. The problem is zoning in American cities tend to be more segmented into different sections by use case which creates a different atmosphere.
dev_daftly··on The day Windows died
Yea, people are confusing what comes in windows by default with what is added by the OEM as most of them have never installed a fresh copy of windows.
dev_daftly··on The day Windows died
Everybody on here like to think they are amazing power users but can't disable a single setting, that I'm pretty sure is part of the standard setup process, to get rid of ads. I've used a number of Windows 10/11 pc's and never seen any of the issues hn complains about regularly.
dev_daftly··on Solid-State Battery Has 2x the Energy–and No Anode
I mean, Toyota has said this themselves. Their view is that making 1,000,000 hybrids is better than 1,000 evs because most of an evs battery capacity is wasted on a daily basis.

When was Clinton indicted and arrested for this crime? It was never prosecuted, she just received a fine from the FEC

The strategy is the democrats have been fundraising on this idea for years and the donors are getting upset

The post seems to talk about 2 different APIs, a public one they are not continuing to work on and a commercial one that makes $400mm/year

He never really left, he kept his office for years after "stepping down" while having meetings without his replacement. He literally saw covid coming and decided to "step-down" to save his image before taking back control last year
dev_daftly··on OpenSUSE Linux gains momentum
I literally went back to ubuntu(popos for the desktop) because fedora/rhel lack a proper wsl integration. I think this is going to become a huge driver for distros in the future as more people use wsl.

I still don't understand why everybody thought self-driving was so easy. It was clearly always going to be decades, not years for them to be ready for the mass market but so many people were acting like normal cars were already obsolete.
dev_daftly··on Japan's hydrogen strategy does nothing for decarbonisation: study
I can't find it right now, but a toyota engineer has actually discussed this. Toyota looks at it this way, especially since you are wasting significant battery capacity on BEV's that don't get utilized daily if the battery supports significantly longer range than daily commute.

dev_daftly··on Signal contradicts Musk, says it’s not helping to encrypt Twitter DMs
We really need better journalism, this entire claim is based on another article where he says he has been talking to Moxie. They at least linked it, but you would expect a journalist to add his actual quote to the story. Here is the section from the linked article where they came up with the idea that he claimed signal was going to work with him.

He went on to praise Signal, the encrypted chat app that is
run as a non-profit. He said he had spoken with its
creator, Moxie Marlinspike, who is now “potentially willing
to help out” with encrypting Twitter DMs.

“Ironically, Moxie Marlinspike worked at Twitter and
actually wanted to do encrypted DMs several years ago,
[but] was denied that and then went and created Signal,”
Musk said. (For those curious, The Wall Street Journal has
a writeup from 2015 detailing Marlinspike’s time at
  Twitter.)

So he is basically going to be creating a tax free way to pass all of his wealth to his kids? I am against taxing inheritance, but people praising billionaires for pledging to get around it legally is annoying.

He wouldn't be able to change the deal, but a lawsuit against the previous board/executives is possible.

The entire waiving of due diligence thing is also such a weird talking point. There was no contingency on due diligence, but part of the deal did include access to the information he would need to do it and any incorrect information in public filings should have been enough to get out of the deal.
