devchris10··on Ask HN: How to Overcome Status Addiction
Ambition and insecurity are two sides of the same coin, imo. These books helped me alot personally:

"Freedom from the known" - Jiddu Krishnamurti and "Power of Now" - Eckhart Tolle

I think it's healthy to pursue goals and improve your life situation. But don't let it become your identity or expect lasting peace from it.

devchris10··on Ask HN: I have $1M cash in my bank. How can I stretch it so I can retire?
Pay down all debt. Cut down on expenses. Sell most of your possessions. Invest in stocks/crypto. Take a few months rest without any digital obligations and reset your health. Good luck.

Below are some apps that address the collection/curation aspect:

devchris10··on Ask HN: Any Day Traders on HN?
Apologies for piggybacking on the original question but couldn't pass up the opportunity to ask the daytrading crowd.

Would you publicly post price predictions/odds to get ranked alongside other traders via Brier scores?

devchris10··on Show HN: I built a gamified forum to help hackers fund each other
Reason I ask is I'm facing a similar issue with an app I'm launching.

My research has led me to this and from what you've said, you might be in the "lottery" zone despite trying to be a "sweepstakes".

devchris10··on Show HN: I built a gamified forum to help hackers fund each other
Just curious, how are you handling the legality if at all :) Are "popularity contests" considered sweepstakes or lotteries?
devchris10··on Ask HN: If you prefer physical books, how do you read without breaking the bank?
Definitely. But costs do add up if you go thru alot.
devchris10··on Ask HN: If you prefer physical books, how do you read without breaking the bank?
Good point. But it does something to know that an old book of mine will go to a specific requester instead being part of a bulk donation.
devchris10··on Ask HN: Any devs interested in exchanging help/labor?
Thanks for the link. I was thinking more of a direct exchange of hours rather than a "lending." Seems to align more incentives that way.
devchris10··on Ask HN: How do you stop overthinking?
Def. not an expert and from what I gathered, it's a lifelong effort. But for me, it takes a few min just to concentrate on the breath and remind myself to observe my thoughts, emotions as separate from my self-awareness. So maybe try extending your sessions to 20-30 min before/after sleeping?

devchris10··on Ask HN: How do you stop overthinking?
Try meditation. It is literally meant to quiet ego-based thinking. Maybe it will help you approach problems with clarity after.

For me, the concepts "feedback loop from hell" and "expecting a positive is a negative" from the book "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" were gamechangers.

Trying to launch event as soon as 200 players sign up. Currently finishing up the app and ranking system.

Feedback welcome!

devchris10··on Ask HN: Tell me about your experience with productivity apps
Yes I have but the UI is too cluttered for me. And I'd like the option to export my data in a useful format and pick my own storage solution.
devchris10··on Ask HN: Tell me about your experience with productivity apps
bridge/connect* instead of distinguish
devchris10··on Ask HN: Tell me about your experience with productivity apps
Not really feature specific, but I've thought about this issue for a long time now. I personally want to move a central application where location of user data can be chosen (s3, dropbox, etc). Mildly considering building an opinionated app for myself and open-source for devs, and paid for non-technical people.

IMO, paper/pencil is great for spontaneous unrestricted flow and manual transcription has shown to be better for synthesis than typing. But the advantages of digital in terms of persistence and accessibility is just too great.

For me, the biggest issue of productivity apps is they don't distinguish between "timeful" data (tied to dates like deadlines or calendar events) and "timeless" data that are more for recall and knowledge store. That's why our tooling is fragmented between todos, calendars, storage, and editors (sheets, docs, etc).

A prediction/promise competition to increase accountability in general.

Politicians/companies spew words and we tend to accept them bc they're "authorities." I believe the best way to increase "skin in the game", accountability, and humble expertise is to predict and have your predictive performance be visible.

There's prediction markets to trade real money with but none that I've seen that ranks your performance against others.

I'm building a platform where it's free to enter/submit predictions in categories of interest. Top ranked players will receive prizes.

I think once players can measure themselves against "authorities" (whose public predictions will be scraped), both will become more accountable.

After predictions, I aim to work on "promises" since they both increase future skin in the game.

devchris10··on Yamato becomes Japan's first city to 'ban' use of phones while walking
I think the problem will be lessened slightly as wearables get better.
devchris10··on Ask HN: Recommend a maths book for a teenager?
Not a book recommendation but maybe applied math or probability/statistics towards investing or AI/ML. A fast feedback loop can do wonders for learning.

devchris10··on Where do you find fellow collaborators in a given field of expertise?
I've been wondering similar things as well. Wondering if there is a need for a dev-centric social network..esp finding like-minded devs with similar tech stack or interests.
devchris10··on Ask HN: Social Network for Engineers?
HN and subreddit is great for uploading posts and having a discussion. It's not as great for finding like-minded devs with similar tech stacks for example.
devchris10··on Ask HN: Social Network for Engineers?
I always thought anonymity and accountability were interesting tensions in a social network. Maybe we allow named accounts with the ability to post anonymous comments or content to other users. But I'd imagine the site admins would need to know this mapping to moderate obscene content.
devchris10··on Ask HN: Impossible Ideas?
Forecasting game (inspired by the book Superforecasters)

Wondering if there'd be enough demand for this..

devchris10··on Ask HN: Impossible Ideas?
IMO, it's a unit economics problem. Mass producing/selling S/M/L is much more profitable than selling extra wide shoulders/small ribcage to two people.
devchris10··on Ask HN: How do I get the spark back for working with computers?
Personally, I think as soon as you attach monetization to something, the incentives and spark for it turns into "work" or a "job". Unless performance or competition is inherently part of the task eg. sports, we have to find ways to enjoy doing something without measuring the output or ROI from it.
devchris10··on What gives you anxiety at work?
Wondering if you're better off spending your 8+ hrs elsewhere (whether that's a different team, job, occupation, etc).
devchris10··on Ask HN: Is remote work here forever?
For the most part yes.

Some companies realize remote working is good for their needs while others do not. Also, it obviously depends on whether a company is built looking at remote working as an option early on (Gitlab) or it has to experiment/transition its way there much later.

The pandemic has undoubtedly accelerated the consideration for companies in general, and I believe the number of companies favorable to remote work has risen.
