Your killing babies point demonstrates a common error with this kind of debate: there are a ton of steps you could take to stop a baby growing up Christian before you jump straight to killing it. A lot of them are also probably abhorrent like but might be better than killing.
Well, that made me unreasonably happy, thank you
Edit: and then realise it's not applicable to android Firefox where I do most of my browsing, but thank you anyway.
Or take some mildly grey area technical steps to get around it. I don't see too many ads these days between the pihole & newpipe & whatever adblockers I've got on Firefox. Traditional TV when we watch the news is basically it. That not open to everyone I know since you need some technical knowledge to set it up.
As a very much devils advocate, one could argue that some companies make a revenue steam or of serving ads, so taking steps to do that is their legitimate business. I personally think that's a screwed up business model but there you are. I've always found legitimate business to be annoyingly vague.
Personally I nearly always take the time to scroll through and untick all the permissions, or find a different site because screw them, that's why. I realise I'm in the minority.
I can say that I've got a much more open mind via conversions I've had with strangers on various platforms over the years. My feminism is much more informed and mature than it would be if I hadn't had access to the differing opinions I've read and discussed over the years for example.
I also wouldn't be able to do my job without the internet. When I was just starting out, I learnt perl out of a big thick book (O'Reilly maybe?) and I can say that searching the internet is easier!
I'm not saying it's perfect, but you must get some value out of it, or you wouldn't be here in the first place...
As someone who's lived here 10 years you're spot on. I hear it all went to pot when they tried to reorganise DB to prepare it for privatisation, which never really happened, and centralised everything around Frankfurt. So now it's in a quasi independent state which no one seems very prioritised about fixing. Hey at least there's the cheap (Deutschland) ticket now.
There is a treasure trove, it's just mixed in with a lot of trash. Like panning for gold, you need to know where the good lodes are and recognise it when you see it.
I assume tech moves on so fast that you have to rewrite the course every year. But you do have some certifications which go some of the way, for example the sun certifications for Java.. At least you know the holder will have an idea how it fits together under the hood...
I was there last year, and to be fair, the road isn't metalled, it's mostly large white stones like gravel but about 5-10cm big. Even a single car kicks up a lot more dust than it would on a "normal" asphalt road. Not that I'm diminishing these peoples' problems, just adding context.
It's funny because externally Germany somehow has the reputation of perfect punctuality, I can only assume that country stereotypes tend to be outdated.
I've found that vague reasons like "it's best practice", "that's the way it should be done" & "that's not scrum" are usually thrown about by people who don't actually know why they're doing that, they just learned it and now feel strongly about it but can't actually back it up.
Indeed, which is why I call myself an environmentalist. I just mean that other life surviving without humans isn't good enough for me, I want the human race to continue in some form.
Did I say anything about western civilisation? I'm talking about humanity. It's quite a leap for you to assume I don't regard countries from the global south as civilised...
If you're right, that's probably a good thing, not sure it'll be enjoyable.. However records are being broken much faster than the worst predictions, so it might be faster than you think.
Thing is, humans weren't there for nearly all of it. It's not a question of whether things change, it's a question of whether we can survive it as a species, or as a civilisation. Empires have risen and fallen throughout history, but it doesn't mean you'd rather live as part of a society in which you could die of a toothache instead of something more advanced.
It's going to get extremely unpleasant, it's a no brainer that we'd like to limit the fallout.
