devilsdata··on Space Elevator
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_elevator

> Above GEO, the centrifugal force is stronger than gravity, causing objects attached to the cable there to pull upward on it. [...] On the cable below geostationary orbit, downward gravity would be greater than the upward centrifugal force, so the apparent gravity would pull objects attached to the cable downward.

So, without defensive countermeasures, the Space Elevator would indeed whip around the Earth.

But honestly, if I were designing such a thing, it would have break points, and maybe even a whinch at the base, to pull the line in. I'd also build it over water, and not over a population centre.

But I'm only a software engineer– it's likely a lot more challenging than this.

I have a pretty good cross-platform dotfiles setup for both Mac OS and Linux that I use Chezmoi to provision. I try not to repeat myself as much as possible.

Here's my repository: https://github.com/lkdm/dotfiles

I use Linux at work and for gaming, and Mac OS for personal stuff. They both build from the same dotfiles repository.

Some things I've learned is:

- Manually set Mac's XDG paths to be equal to your Linux ones. It's much less hassle than using the default system ones.

  - See my .profile as an example on how I do this: https://github.com/lkdm/dotfiles/blob/main/dot_profile.tmpl
- Use Homebrew on both Linux and Mac OS for your CLI tools

- Add Mac OS specific $PATH locations /bin, /usr/sbin, /sbin

- Do NOT use Docker Desktop. It's terrible. Use the CLI version, or use the OrbStack GUI application if you must.

- If you use iCloud, make a Zsh alias for the iCloud Drive base directory

- Mac OS ships with outdated bash and git. If you use bash scripts with `#!/usr/bin/env bash`, you should install a newer version of bash with brew, and make sure Homebrew's opt path comes before the system one, so the new bash is prioritised.

I hope this is helpful to you, so feel free to ask me anything about how I set up my dotfiles.

devilsdata··on Zed: High-performance AI Code Editor
I like Zed, but my gripes with it are what finally got me to give up GUI IDEs and use NeoVim. Haven't looked back so far.
devilsdata··on How Riot Games is fighting the war against video game hackers
This is like saying Google isn’t extremely profit-driven because we don’t pay them.
devilsdata··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (April 2025)
I was diagnosed with ADHD last year, and am curious as to what you've learned in your time. I'm taking 40-50mg methylphenidate hydrochloride (Ritalin) daily and working a hybrid web developer role. I'm trying to increase my reading of literature and begin writing, but I find myself just watching YouTube/browsing Reddit and HN.

230lbs is wild. Great job :)

devilsdata··on Apple needs a Snow Sequoia
Yep Bazzite is great. But the difference between them is mostly just the packages installed. To me it’s easier to install the gaming related packages from Bazzite onto Bluefin.

I have a problem with Docker sockets while installing onto Bazzite, and didn’t care enough to look further into it.

devilsdata··on Apple needs a Snow Sequoia
It’s comparable for nearly every game I’ve tried, and takes less than 30 seconds to compile Vulcan shaders on my rig.

That said, I think anything with kernel-level anti-cheat either does not run or runs poorly.

devilsdata··on Apple needs a Snow Sequoia
Fedora atomic distributions in general are great. I recommend Bluefin-dx over Bazzite (they’re both GNOME-based Fedora Atomic from the same group— universal blue) for developers, because it’s really easy to install the packages that Bazzite gives you, and it comes pre-installed with Docker.
devilsdata··on Ask HN: Has anyone moved away from Mac?
Not moving away from Mac, I still have my Mac and love it.

But I've installed Bluefin-dx on my gaming PC and work laptop. I love it. It's similar enough to Mac OS and really solid.

devilsdata··on Ask HN: Best Windows/Linux developer laptop in 2025
Ah didn't realise you couldn't dual boot Windows on a Mac, sorry.
devilsdata··on Ask HN: Best Windows/Linux developer laptop in 2025
Why is the Macbook not an option? They are the best at making laptop hardware, and to my knowledge you can run what you like on it. Mac OS is good, but I also like Fedora's Atomic distros, such as Bluefin-dx.
devilsdata··on Ask HN: Firefox may be selling our data. Can you recommend an alternative?
You're correct that that statement conflicts with my post– I had only read diff in their `Tos copy updates` commit [0]. I also had just woken up, so I used the word announce incorrectly– I meant to say the diff implied it.

Thanks for your post. It's possible that they're preparing to sell our data, but it's also possible, based on the wording, that they're telling the truth about needing to change their privacy policy for different legal jurisdictions.

I do however want to raise a concern that Mozilla is currently facing a funding crisis[1], and they are likely scrambling to find a way to monetise something.

I've edited the title and description of my post for accuracy.

devilsdata··on I helped fix sleep-wake hangs on Linux with AMD GPUs
Here we go:

https://github.com/lkdm/dotfiles/blob/main/bin/executable_wk...

Hope it helps you out

devilsdata··on I helped fix sleep-wake hangs on Linux with AMD GPUs
Props to you for this.

I am not clever/experienced enough to solve my own issues with sleep-wake hangs on Linux at work.

I’ve instead opted to work around it. I use Firefox, Obsidian, and Tmux with Neovim for all my work. Tmux has resurrect and a plugin that saves my entire terminal state automatically every few minutes.

I also have a command that automatically sets up my i3wm/regolith windows exactly how I like.

Basically if I run `wkup`, I’m exactly where I was, down to the line of code open on NeoVim, Firefox tab, and dev server or cargo running.

devilsdata··on San Francisco homelessness: Park ranger helps one person at a time
This is the nuanced perspective that’s sorely needed in our society. Some people refuse help, and it becomes a talking point and a reason to never offer help— but that simply shouldn’t be the case.

Attitude? My brother in Christ, you’re the one that wants to put crypto posts in my community.

You’re not entitled to an audience.

devilsdata··on Tumblr to join the Fediverse after WordPress migration completes
I want moderation on the platforms I go to. I don’t want to have to wade through cruft, even if there are false positives.

Also I don’t want anything pro-crypto on my feeds.

Absolutely agree, except that class awareness is what the left is all about.
devilsdata··on China Is Rapidly Becoming a Leading Innovator in Advanced Industries
I am frustrated by the West. In my country alone (Australia), there will probably never be high speed rail between cities. The entire market investment is dominated by bloated real-estate. There is almost no progress. We're pretty much in decline.
devilsdata··on uBlock Origin is no longer available on Chrome web store
I sympathise. It annoys me to no end that accessibility seems to be an afterthought on the modern web.

Another thing for me is that popups annoy me. If I get too many modals pop up on a page, I get emotionally frustrated. This is quite common these days with some websites– all it takes is one GDPR cookies modal and an AI chat popup in the bottom right corner– and that's already way more frustration than my brain can handle.

devilsdata··on uBlock Origin is no longer available on Chrome web store
I have ADHD and I cannot use a product if there is ads. In any form they exist in, they take up time, energy, and attention, all of which I have precious little of compared to the average person.

Ensuring I still have PiHole or NextDNS to block ads at a DNS level, I'd use Safari with any adblock extension.

Failing that, I'd browse the compatible web with a TUI browse in terminal.

Failing that I'm reading books and taking notes on paper or in Vim. No internet for me.

devilsdata··on Founder Mode, hackers, and being bored by tech
It makes me wonder what our future will look like? Are we doomed to climate collapse on this planet? In which case, is space-faring our future?

To further your point– if we can't even get our act together on this planet, what evidence is there that we could get our act together in space?

I think the survivors of these early centuries of the third millennium will be forced into space. By this point infrastructure from mining and refining rare-earth minerals will be in place. It will be survivable, but it won't be comfortable. It may never be.

Our debut as a space-faring species will mark a long dark age in our history. With no evidence that we can create microgravity, terraform, travel even close to half the speed of light, or put ourselves into some form of abeyance (cryosleep)– we will become divided, isolated, and oppressed to a degree we never have in our history. We will struggle for every resource we currently take for granted.

I have no doubt that humanity in some form will continue to survive, but I don't think it will be comfortable or ideal.

devilsdata··on Founder Mode, hackers, and being bored by tech
You're onto it. Basically the wealthy freeze technological growth until they can understand how to make profit from it. Results are science and tech slowed to a glacial pace. We may not even be able to outengineer our problems due to this one thing.
