devindotcom··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
I hadn't heard of the uncharted, sounds like it's closer to a C-HR electric than anything else? not that there's anything wrong with that. I love subes and drive an old one but they have a certain vibe that I wonder if the Toyota collab takes away.

all kind of academic since I'm planning on getting a slate but it's nice to know Subaru is bouncing back from that Solterra disaster.

devindotcom··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
the slate truck is about as close as we'll get to that.
devindotcom··on DoorDash Spent $1.4M Trying to Stop Mamdani from Becoming Mayor. Now We Know Why
really we should be giving credit to hammurabi for developing the idea of laws in the first place. where would deblasio be without him??
devindotcom··on The new CC, an AI agent built for families
non tech people will never hear about it haha, and if they did they'd be ten times as baffled as the others in this thread
devindotcom··on The human brain is two separate organs, study finds
interesting. this will no doubt produce some fascinating new lines of inquiry but as with most neuroscience stuff entering the mainstream, be wary of pretty much all takes and repurposing of this new info into some preexisting narrative about the nature of decisionmaking or consciousness, why the 'lizard brain' drives our desires, etc etc.

feels like brain and quantum science, being as they are so rudimentary yet evocative, are especially vulnerable to popular distortion. be safe out there

devindotcom··on I said no and Apple said yes
that's not the main point of the article

that's not even the topic of the article

that refers to a post from 2025 that he links to. this is clear from the first sentence of the article. I suspect maybe you didn't actually read the article and spent more time writing this erroneous comment than you might have reading the article.

devindotcom··on The Claude Delusion
the intent of the painting does not come from the person who made the brush.
devindotcom··on The Claude Delusion
I think you should revisit your understanding of intentionality in this context
devindotcom··on English: A vs. An
yep although I don't think it sounds too intrusive. it comes out as theeyactual while the alternative would the thuh.Actual with a sort of micro-accent on the A. I'm sure linguists have names for all these things, like when the movements of the tongue and mouth incidentally form phonemes!
devindotcom··on English: A vs. An
I do this too - "thee actual" vs "thuh real" and such. I do expect it's to do with having a vowel sound of a certain kind at the beginning of the next work making you move your tongue in a certain way.
devindotcom··on English: A vs. An
don't worry too much. english is such a muddled tongue to begin with that there are many ways of saying something "correctly" and few if any of us know them all. anyone who quibbles over some fine verbal point is probably not someone whose opinion you should value!

that said I know in business communication this kind of thing can be less forgiving. i will say that grammar and syntax checking for non native speakers is one of the few very beneficial applications of LLMs.

devindotcom··on I think you should almost never use AI to write
AI can't critique because it has no critical faculty. It can only offer critique-shaped language. That may be useful for some, though.
devindotcom··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
I don't think that comparison is quite apropos
devindotcom··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
I think it's more of a Chicken Little situation. Then the wolf ate us all up.
devindotcom··on Ex-FTC boss Khan: break out the handcuffs for AI CEOs, citing 1934 precedent
that's certainly fair - it doesn't necessarily follow. her specifically, being an expert before and having spent time as chair though, does tell me she is on target here.
devindotcom··on Show HN: An e-ink frame that hears birds and draws them as 1800s illustrations
it's been around. I more commonly see it as "been a minute!" when you see someone you haven't seen in a good while.
devindotcom··on OpenAI buys smartphone camera maker Glass Imaging for $300M
what an interesting acquisition. I was the one who wrote them up originally for TC: https://techcrunch.com/2022/03/22/glass-rethinks-the-smartph...

they had a really cool optical approach that I kind of felt immediately was doomed in the consumer market but would likely find a cool, valuable niche. The unique distortion patterns and front element I felt probably ruled out cinema but beyond that I had no idea. looks like they pivoted at some point but their expertise in lens accommodation does seem like it could be helpful.

devindotcom··on People who can't picture anything are rewriting the science of imagination
Interesting to me that three different people have responded with the same "I'm also aphantasic and dream normally" start to their message.
devindotcom··on Ex-FTC boss Khan: break out the handcuffs for AI CEOs, citing 1934 precedent
She is a former FTC Chair so she knows what she's talking about, although her approach to enforcement was more expansive than others. The FTC would investigate, likely along the lines she summarizes, build a case in writing, and refer it to the Justice Dept, which would actually prosecute the case. Not going to happen under this administration, but Khan is saying it's entirely possible that such an enforcement action could be brought to bear, now or later. Personally I hope she gets her job back at some point and does it herself.
devindotcom··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
I personally use the swiping keyboard on ios and it seems to detect the wrong word with an almost malicious frequency. It also randomly Capitalizes things.
devindotcom··on We must pace the frontier
throwaway bigot account
devindotcom··on Eating Fruit Skins
yeah, I do this too. minimize the fuzz and the skin itself improves the overall flavor in my opinion.
devindotcom··on Feeling Sad about AI
I appreciate this sentiment and I'll add that, as a writer, I've encountered and experienced it myself and among creative friends.

The notion that a model can produce text, or images, that resemble our output is certainly dispiriting in some ways. But it also is empowering when you realize that what you create, and the way you feel when you do it, is independent of that.

I don't write to put machines in their place - I do it because I like it, and because I want to manifest my ideas in a way that is uniquely my own. I don't really care that a machine may produce a book. That book simply has no value to me and I hope that over time, as the novelty of this form of semantic reproduction wears off, others will share that estimation.

devindotcom··on San Francisco institution 'heartbroken and furious' after erasure of public art
imagine telling people not to bring their politics to "the world" so you can enjoy it. the world isn't a product you ordered.

i mean a modicum of reflection shows you that what you are suggesting would in fact be imposing your own political agenda on everyone else.

devindotcom··on Amazon refused to give pregnant workers bathroom breaks
>this reporting could use a little less clickbait and little more details from the actual lawsuit

talking about the article

devindotcom··on Amazon refused to give pregnant workers bathroom breaks
look man you might just consider not commenting about stuff you know absolutely nothing about. it's totally ok to just not speak up and use it as an opportunity to learn.
devindotcom··on Amazon refused to give pregnant workers bathroom breaks
headline is factual: Lawsuit: Amazon refused to give pregnant workers bathroom breaks and chairs

all the info you point out is in the first few paragraphs, much more context also provided as well as responses from amazon and context from the women

devindotcom··on iPhone Duo
I already had the backup but I'll keep that in mind for next time. the screen is fairly beat up too so I don't mind. I'll keep the old one around in case the replacement gets lost or stolen.
devindotcom··on San Francisco institution 'heartbroken and furious' after erasure of public art
it's pretty sad reading the comments in this thread. one senses both the cause and the result of SF's declining cultural relevance.
devindotcom··on iPhone Duo
same. my current SE 3 is starting to limp battery-wise and I'm about to switch to my backup one. Hoping they come to their senses before it wears out.
