I think Navier was doing some but it was limited, specific routes and a while back. But it's something to look into.
devindotcom··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
replacing the notch with a hole punch isn't much of an improvement for me anyway. it still kills the top quarter inch of the display for non-letterboxed movies, games etc. I'm tempted to replace my Air with a Neo just to have a non-punctured screen.
devindotcom··on Early progress on accelerating drug development with Claude
the thing is we are not short on "ideas" in the drug development process
devindotcom··on Show HN: Glider 4.0 Unofficial Web Edition (Mac game port)
just noticed the name. thanks very much for many hours of fun in my youth. I'm looking forward to playing this again!
devindotcom··on Show HN: Glider 4.0 Unofficial Web Edition (Mac game port)
Ah, the muscle memory comes back fast.

>The port was directed by a human, implemented by Claude Opus 5.5, and designed by both.

This is certainly one area where I find AI tools to be largely beneficial. There are so many pieces of near-forgotten software that are difficult to interface with at all, let alone to decompile, debug and port and so on. I was thinking lately how useful an AI-powered editor for NES- and SNES-era games would be. The existing tile and mapper editors are generally pretty clunky IIRC.

this is directly side-on. they've def removed the camera bump. In the initial animation at the top where the hand grabs it too. the bump is very clear in shots later!

wait... could they have hidden it under the hand? and why does that person's thumb seem extra long?! the more I look at this the less I understand it.

devindotcom··on New iPad mini
woah - that's pretty shocking to me actually. in the past they generally have just used flattering angles. This is downright deception.
devindotcom··on Every AI model has the same "controversial" take on humans
I'll go with C: a total lack of imagination

devindotcom··on We are all living inside of an obscure sci-fi film from 1970
Either that or The Parallax View. Or of course Idiocracy.
devindotcom··on Every AI model has the same "controversial" take on humans
could this be... an actual example of "begging the question"?!
devindotcom··on Award-winning AI literature
yes, you seem like someone I want to spend time talking to
devindotcom··on Award-winning AI literature
To be honest I doubt it. As far as I am concerned at least, it's a bit like the distinction between a shit sandwich and a sandwich that uses shit as a condiment.

In the terms of the fruit of the poisonous tree, the tree is not AI or what it touches, it is an author who chooses to use AI in the process of writing. The fruit of that tree is simply not one I care to eat.

devindotcom··on Claude Duet
dot, bot, and duet, all announced in a month. you couldn't make up this level of industry lockstep. now all we need is google bit and microsoft ditty.
devindotcom··on Claude designed protein binders against scorpion neurotoxins
My understanding is it is not - this is something we have models for, and there was a flurry of machine learning based drug discovery companies about 8-10 years ago. But they ran into the testing bottleneck real fast because they would spit out thousands of candidates for binders and so on that all needed to be tested in vitro before they could even start the real drug dev circuit. Furthermore the drugs need to be manufacturable and that's not a trivial problem.

It's nice to (as the blog post suggests) give the opportunity to non medical experts, say in this case a snake/venom research center, to pursue a problem and produce some realistic candidates that they could pay to test. I do think it's good to democratize what parts of the process can be, but it's more of a resource prioritization problem than a molecular design one.

devindotcom··on Maybe There Was an Egg Cartel After All
fair enough, this kind of thing hasn't been a strong suit for a while - I had hopes for Lina Khan but she didn't have the time or backup she needed. but right now is an especially laissez-faire moment when it comes to criminal enrichment
devindotcom··on Maybe There Was an Egg Cartel After All
big fine? they paid 3 million plus 50 million eggs at cost - they probably made on the order of 2-3 billion on this criminal scheme.

I'm confused by your aspersions. should or should not Politico have written this piece? and what is this group of people, and what "approved" outlets do you refer to? are they the ones who naysaid the allegations to begin with or the opposite? have the conviction to name those you accuse.

devindotcom··on Maybe There Was an Egg Cartel After All
well if you keep reading, the investigation has concluded and they are declining to pursue any charges, alleging that the return of egg prices to pre-collusion levels is the desired outcome. there may be a $3 million fine, which is of course microscopic compared with the profits created from collusion. surely a years-long price fixing conspiracy costing consumers billions deserves more than that, but under this administration we are unlikely to get it.
devindotcom··on Hatching (Heraldry)
I think the yellow heart situation brought it to a lot of people's attention. that was years ago but it was going around recently:

devindotcom··on Retired Penn professor arrested for blocking Uber Eats robot
it would be irresponsible for us to assume otherwise!
devindotcom··on Retired Penn professor arrested for blocking Uber Eats robot
well yes. if you are OK with getting arrested and charged for demonstrating your political convictions, I support your nonviolent protest. this isn't the gotcha you seem to think it is.
devindotcom··on Retired Penn professor arrested for blocking Uber Eats robot
good for her. nonviolent obstruction of a commercial endeavor she opposes, much like a sit-in. whether you agree with her perspective or not I think it is important to support her ability to protest in this way, though (as she is well aware) it may come with consequences.
devindotcom··on ChatGPT is adding real cartoonists' signatures to fake New Yorker cartoons
this is so funny to me. it's not just a false signature. clearly the whole thing is false.
devindotcom··on OpenAI "rogue" agent activities found on Wikimedia projects
a fine hope if unlikely. but I wanted to also note in friendly fashion that the word you want is precedent (or precedents) - precedence has a connotation of "first among" rather than precedent's "came before."
devindotcom··on OpenAI "rogue" agent activities found on Wikimedia projects
kind of like saying that because a restaurant is doing well, it should allow rats in the kitchen
devindotcom··on OpenAI "rogue" agent activities found on Wikimedia projects
If a truck driver doesn't tie down their rebar then it flies out all over the highway, we don't call it "rogue rebar," we correctly identify the responsible party and take appropriate measures, such as suspending their license or criminal proceedings.

I think enough of these improperly constrained agent events have occurred that we can safely say this is misconduct of a level necessitating serious and concerted regulation of AI labs. We can't wait until serious harm is done like the disruption of medical or social services.

devindotcom··on Automating my 35mm film scanning pipeline
Hi Aaron!! I'll check out the posts. And yeah happy to take you up on that!
devindotcom··on Improper redaction reveals Google Data Center water and electricity usage
kind of confusing numbers here. the 13 million gallon figure refers to one specific datacenter, but you add on five more datacenters and the number grows to... 765 million gallons? The datacenter in Papillion accounts for 548 million of those. Is it bigger? Is it less efficient? not a lot of info apparent in this report.

If those numbers are yearly, they are significant (about what the city of Lincoln uses in a month) but perhaps not troubling. Depends on your perspective.

devindotcom··on How to scale intent, quality, and artistry with AI [video]
With the caveat that I have not watched the video, the title itself rubs me the wrong way. Intent, quality, and artistry as I understand them are not things intended to "scale." You would not, for instance, as a musician, think "I made an album, yes. But how do I scale up to ten or a hundred albums?" You may well think "How can I scale my audience," but that is a different question entirely and not a matter of intent, quality, or artistry. Scaling art is, to me, a wrongheaded notion to begin with.
devindotcom··on Blindsight (Watts Novel)
If you haven't read the book, beware of spoiler warnings in this thread! It's pretty important in this case.
