Maybe too obvious but PowerToys adds a lot of things I wish Windows shipped with.
devnullbrain··on Life on board a British nuclear submarine (2012)
It's irritating enough trying to share a hallway with my dog
devnullbrain··on Nvidia announces financial results for second quarter fiscal 2024
Moore's law is about transistors, not CS:GO. CS:GO benchmarks stopped advancing as quickly because Moore's law is - objectively, despite the protestations of semiconductor companies - dead.
devnullbrain··on Mounting your iPhone on your motorcycle can damage its camera (2022)
The UK DVLA must be snobs too, I can ride the moped in the video with my car licence but not a motorbike. And a high-powered one - which you declined to mention - is another licence again.

devnullbrain··on Even Been to This Free London Yew Maze?
>A maze is a complex, branching (multicursal) puzzle that includes choices of path and direction, while a labyrinth is unicursal, i.e., has only a single, non-branching path, which leads to the center.

devnullbrain··on ARM’s Neoverse N2: Cortex A710 for Servers
Dear lockhouse,

What does any of this have to do with Neoverse?

devnullbrain··on ARM’s Neoverse N2: Cortex A710 for Servers
ARM servers have a better history of mass production than server CPU startups have of making it to 5 years without being acquired. But then that's probably the goal.
devnullbrain··on $HOME, not so sweet $HOME
By non-standard I mean XDG home
devnullbrain··on $HOME, not so sweet $HOME
Stick it in the manpage. Neovim does this. Power users who care about non-standard configuration should be able to carry the burden of managing it.
devnullbrain··on Naomi Wu and the Silence That Speaks Volumes
Twitter now bravely, aggressively exposes me to both left-wing and right-wing politics [1]

devnullbrain··on Naomi Wu and the Silence That Speaks Volumes
A language and internet barrier makes it difficult to find unbiased news and views. Most of us have no primary sources, everything is relayed to us by:

- People in China who choose or are allowed to bypass the GFW

- People who decided to leave China, or whose families decided to leave

- People who decided to learn Chinese

There can be a political motivation for all three of these.

devnullbrain··on New York City bans TikTok for government employees
For us, it feels like our development is a loathed distraction from your quest to implement the platonic ideal of a secure machine, free from any indulgences like networking, external drives, and a fan given the chance to wind-down between the anti-virus stomping on the CPU.

I particularly like joining a new company and being expected to write and memorise several distinct, secure passwords before having the computing and network freedom to use a password manager. Having to tell my new manager I forgot my password is a riot.

devnullbrain··on $HOME, not so sweet $HOME
The multiple references to Microsoft being unable to follow their own design are shocking. If even the developers dogfooding can't find these conventions, how can they expect the peanut gallery to manage?
devnullbrain··on $HOME, not so sweet $HOME
Multiple options for configuration files is a well-trod, easy solution. You shouldn't have to migrate.
devnullbrain··on Today I learned you can pause the Windows Task Manager moving apps around
Funny how user experiences differ. I've had Task Manager fail to open because I dared to unzip a file on a slow harddrive. It's unreliable quite often.
devnullbrain··on Today I learned you can pause the Windows Task Manager moving apps around
It's a necessary development: it's tough for Microsoft employees to get their work done when programs keep on crashing Explorer.exe and then Task Manager becomes unresponsive too.

Hopefully they'll run into some friction using NTFS so we can start modifying files that are in use.

devnullbrain··on $HOME, not so sweet $HOME
Huh, who'd have thought it: you can make something sound arrogant by rewriting it to use arrogant language.
devnullbrain··on $HOME, not so sweet $HOME
>There are countless tools that write to the bash files though

Which is terrible, btw. Configuration using untyped, unchecked files, readable & writeable by almost everything is one of the worst parts of Linux. Especially when it exists in a directory the user should expect to be their exclusive domain.

devnullbrain··on Every phone should be able to run personal websites
The phone network has no problem with me uploading 25MB videos to social media.

'Personal website' doesn't have to mean running Google in your pocket.

devnullbrain··on Every phone should be able to run personal websites
So let them fail. It's not that urgent.
devnullbrain··on Every phone should be able to run personal websites
It's very sad that a forum of self-styled hackers can not see the value in a personal website. Our image of what the web is and should be has been poisoned by 99.999% uptime cloud-hosted tat.
devnullbrain··on Every phone should be able to run personal websites
>Phones go into tunnels, run out of battery, and go indoors where there's a poor signal or none at all.

i.e. when you can't take a call or a text or read a social media notification. Why does this need to be always-available if those don't?

devnullbrain··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
Does this show on the car's display or is it limited to showing on the phone's screen?
devnullbrain··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
A population of 9 million but big tech's allergy to scaling customer support means they don't pay a local person to adjust things for local expectations.

But why would they? We have to use it anyway.

devnullbrain··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
In the app, you also can't adjust your departure time to see if there's a better time to leave. You have to use the web UI which doesn't have a way to share this information (beyond a starting point and finishing point) with the app.
