devnullbrain··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
It's deeply concerning that the only alternative to Google Maps being terrible is to use Google's Waze. The only thing stopping another Inbox situation is the threat of anti-competition law.

The search-along-route is more of a 'search-around-my-current position'. If you e.g. need fuel, it lists options for busy towns in the wrong direction rather than the easiest path along your current route. If you need a given RON or niche fuel, you just have to memorise which suppliers sell it & hope that it shows up in the list. The utopian vision that it could figure out the range of the car it's connected to and use this information to decide where would be most efficient to fill up is a pipe dream.

Using Maps while driving for anything other than A-B navigation is generally poor. It seems designed by people who are accustomed to every destination having plentiful dedicated parking. If you want to go to B, then find local parking, you need to invoke dark voodoo.

The worst part is that the Apple & Google duopoly in maps supported by Android Auto and Apple Carplay means there's no way for a superior alternative to succeed in the market. Google even contributed to this by buying Waze. So Maps only needs to be just good enough.

>the exact kind of behavior/mentality that most scientists hate due to how it warps things like funding

I'd be more sympathetic to this had scientists not done such a terrible job of distributing the funding my taxes pay for

I wonder if there were any unusual events happening in global markets 3 years ago?

A lack of prescience is not unique to tugboats.

I'm surprised there's a shortage, I picture being a pilot as a very desirable career that would lead to an oversupply. Is it because learning to fly is too expensive for many of the people who want to do it?

Yes. Entertainment brings in money which can be used to pay for things with positive externalities.

A more politically controversial example would be social media/'platforms', IMO. Google and Facebook are allowed to be in possession of CSAM, as long as someone else put it there.

I quoted it!

That's a non-sequitur. I do multiple warmup sets. Typically one for each pair of plates.

devnullbrain··on Computationally optimal arrangements of barbell plates
In exercise science there's a concept called specificty: training is more useful the more similar it is to the thing you're training for. If you're just training to make some parts of you bigger and others smaller, moving plates is still poor exercise because it's a variable movement that can lead to asymmetries or overuse injuries and can't be progressively overloaded.

> for each exercise you should have 2 weights: warmup and the weight you are working on.

DYEL? There is no safe way to have a single warmup set for a high deadlift weight. It feels like you recently discovered Stronglifts.

Human evolution doesn't care about life after prehistoric child-rearing. It has no reason to optimise for longevity.

HGH has deleterious health effects when abused. But it can also make you a famous movie star living a life of luxury whose children will never have to work. Our personal goals have very different parameters to what defined our evolution.

There are also other things that the human body benefits from but can't make itself. Creatine, essential amino acids, essential minerals and vitamins.

devnullbrain··on Threads, an Instagram app
You won't find one because you've given an arbitrary limitation that is contrary to how Meta do business. Threads is not even standalone because it uses the Instagram graph.

When I read others on HN talk about the Facebook experience it often feels like they have a completely foreign viewpoint to you and me.

When I open Facebook, I don't see ranting family members. I see half a dozen groups and pages full of or operated by people I don't know.
