devtul··on Trump threatens to 'close' down social media platforms
The amount of leeway given to one side of the political spectrum is what causes this whole heated political climate.

Whenever some known person from the "right side of history" says something clearly bad, there are always comments like yours "but but but", whereas when the source is on the "wrong side of history" it is taken as final and irrefutable proof of their evilness and no amount of perspective or depth is allowed.

Things will get better when we can give a level headed non-partisan response to statements like

>Today on Meet The Press, we're speaking with Joseph Goebbels about the first 100 days...' - What I hear whenever Kellyanne is on a news show.'

devtul··on Trump threatens to 'close' down social media platforms
We could fine/punish people if they post misinformation, even implement a kind of points system where the person has some societal rights given or taken, like being banned from sharing, commenting, doing any type of publishing on the internet.

Would that be too harsh? For sure it would prevent needless deaths.

Some of them might not be broken-clock right, but I don't see a way of filtering the noise.
devtul··on Vice Media Lays Off 155 Employees with Deepest Cuts in Digital Group
Last Vice thing I watched was about one of their reporters going through the process of getting a gun license and buying a firearm in Canada. Surprisingly nice reporting but still with a progressive tint to it.

Spoiler: She didn't cry after shooting a firearm.

devtul··on YouTube removed a viral video of two doctors calling for an end to quarantine
> there's no insight here I think that is great, I'm tired of articles that start by poisoning the well. Just tell me what happened, who said what when and let me try to reach my own conclusions.

Many writers nowadays think they are some sort of missionary on a mission to save the pagans(us).

Living in Canada for about two years, so make whatever of my opinion. They seem very fond of the current government, they remind me of US media with Obama but way more subdued.
devtul··on YouTube bans coronavirus-related content that directly contradicts WHO advice
Infallible institutions change their minds too, you just need to pay close attention to not contradict their rulings.
devtul··on Users protest over 'creepy' Facebook update (2006)
Yes, yes, yes! This has been bothering me lately, I see a friends picture on Instagram, tap twice, move on. This means, at best, that I acknowledge seeing that photo but it tricks my mind into thinking I did "something" better than that.

I myself don't even check the likes I receive so I suppose some people out there don't too, that reinforces my feelings towards liking stuff being shallow substitutes of real interactions. I will make a point of writing a comment now, if I can't come up with something then I guess I don't really care and there is nothing to like about it.

devtul··on Startups bet that lonely freelancers crave company
You don't need to work remote to feel miserably lonely.

I moved to Canada with my wife, I consider myself lucky because I have two couples of friends who also moved here. Apart from that, nothing.

People where I work don't even say bye when they leave. This is insanely different from the country I came from, to say people there make a point of striking up conversations and caring about you doesn't make justice, it is just part of life. The worst part is that I am basically surrounded by fellow countrymen (1/3 of the team) but they already conformed to the norm here.

This has affected our marriage since we don't have that healthy time away with friends that heals any bad mood between us.

devtul··on Paper Clay Air Humidifier
Oooooh, so that is the cause of my apartment being hazy?! Just moved to a new place, air humidity can get around 10% and since I don't enjoy being tazed by my sofa I bought a small humidifier from Amazon, both I and my wife noticed what seems to be a cloud in our living room.

Darryl's work is amazing. Today we see people doing the polar opposite, label someone, shum and deplatform, label some more, harass, destroy his/her livelihood, destroy his/her reputation.

This propensity doesn't have to do with Brexit, we've had signs of the UK moving towards a police state long before it.
devtul··on Tesla races past $100B in market valuation
Self-driving cars wouldn't be a faster horse, but a carriage for everyone type deal. At least if we manage to overcome the limitation of needing the driver to be paying attention to the road, even when the car is in auto.

It is not hard to be better than a concentration camp, there is a huge range of bad above the nazi camp level. I read Gulag Archipelago, so yes I might have a bias.

> gulag prisoner behave more like city dwellers

I don't even know what to make of this

> A number of cities started as gulags/incorporated gulags still exist in Siberia/Arctic

The ones exploring natural resources would be my guess, first with forced labor, then as a normal economy after this.

> If you think I’m defending gulags

It does sound like it, you even put a disclaimer

Seeing how widespread the use of blocklists is in lefty circles, nothing to do with anything challenging of their dogma.
devtul··on Show HN: Mute.vc – Mute Investors on Twitter
Any community-driven blocklist is bound to be infiltrated by bigots, no thanks. I just watched a Project Veritas (which is in this blocklist)exposé of a Bernie staffer saying "Gulags were a lot better than the CIA has told us".

Why not prepare a petri dish with the topography of the region and let some fungus populate it, copy the pattern as roads and mass transportation and populate the surrounding areas.

devtul··on 23andMe to share customer gene data with GlaxoSmithKline for $300M
On another thread someone was talking about the possibilities of the use of big data on medical records, but people pointed out some restrictions, be it HIPAA or other legislations regarding personal medical information, that would prevent that from happening.

TBH I think we benefit from research having access to such data, if it means to open new venues for development of better and cheaper drugs. But it sure leaves me scratching my head, maybe because the way it happened, for profit company selling user DNA data to another for profit without any cashback to the customers.

devtul··on Honda Refuses to Track Stolen Accord Because Owner Didn't Pay for HondaLink
We might have two possibilities, if the car is sending "I'm alive!" then it's ok, the rep could say they have the vehicle online, maybe the rep wasn't so accurate with his words and said they had the location. But if it's "I'm alive, my coordinates are X, Y" even without an active subscription, then this is a big issue.

News today seems like an outrage business, an editor skill can be measured on how he or she can turn some inane happening into a blood-boiling title.

No, we should do a second vote, maybe even a third vote in case the second vote result is wrong again as the first one.
