dfalfndfk··on Ask HN: Quitting Big Tech, what is it like?
Tech jobs are the easiest job bar being rich and watching investments make money for you. Crazy that people think being a barista is easier.

If you are a person of colour in America you're definitely at risk.

A few of your points do not work out precisely because of China's "harmonious' culture. It's more difficult to be accepted as a foreigner _even if you are of Chinese descent_.

But I agree there are a large many things that can be learned.

Imagine even more sophisticated advertising from Big Pharma to the old and vulnerable. That is reason enough.

As a society we are getting better at talking about income. We hide _that_ because of a lack of class consciousness. We should absolutely be transparent with income (except when negotiating for a new salary).

Like you say it's the access to data itself that is valuable. At risk of oversimplifying: building models is the easy part. Plenty of smart people who can do that.

Data that is expensive to acquire is the best long-term play for an ML company. Either expensive due to regulations or expensive due to the quality of sources. Ideally both.

Technology always cared about politics. Exactly what about missiles is apolitical? What about telemetry and data collection?

Do not conflate ignorance with impact.

Well put argument. A lot of posturing in comments in threads like these which try to mislead the reader into thinking that they are looking at the conflict from a higher, more rational, position.

I like the way you have framed the argument.

We should cease pretending scale does not matter. Also that analogies are useful. Your flyer analogy is not useful because it does not _replace_ another flyer. A clear analogy would be buying advertising space in a newspaper.

If you were to buy the entire newspaper's advertising space to amplify your voice I would definitely consider it an abuse of power and wrong.
