dfeojm-zlib··on NEC shows ‘flying car’ hovering steadily for minute
I hope people give up on this 1950's-era mythological obsession with trying to realize a cartoon's flying saucer pods because of the potential for energy waste/climate change, public hazards and property damage.
dfeojm-zlib··on Facebook Is Getting Rid of “Secret” or “Closed” Groups
Facebook's accumulation of a pattern of making major, surprise changes that are mostly about benefiting money-making, directly or indirectly. Super popular but seemingly more and more terrible as time goes on.
dfeojm-zlib··on Facebook Is Getting Rid of “Secret” or “Closed” Groups
I tried FB in early ~2000's because I had a @stanford email, but after a coworker's wife started tagging people and editorializing randomly, it was clearly more of a liability than value. I had emptied details and most content but kept for some old photos, but finally migrated and purged it this year because it's basically a vehicle of surprise privacy monetization to make Wall St. happy. If a social media service instead were instead subscriber- and donation-supported, it wouldn't develop such perverse incentives to sell-out its users to stay afloat.
dfeojm-zlib··on Watch Out Google, YouTubers Are Unionizing
Definitely. I also came across that video via a shout-out from Forgotten Weapons:

I hope Dr. Richard Wolff interviews Youtube Union and IG Metall, because it's in his wheelhouse of workers organizing, co-ops and economics.

dfeojm-zlib··on HTTP/2 Denial of Service Advisory
Yeap. Emperor's new clothes / Not Invented Here / reinventing the wheel / new is "better" than old - churn / kitchen-sink design-by-committee (cough OpenSSL cough). This happens more and more. Instead of fixing existing infrastructure that has a well-established/proven history, throwing everything away and starting over like what came before never existed. And let's over-engineer it and add every possible feature that we'll never use! It's so new and broken, isn't it awesome!?!
dfeojm-zlib··on Nissan Motor's Lawsuit Against Us
Renault-Nissan (Motor)-Mitsubishi merger with Fiat-Chrysler will create a megacorp or "alliance" with almost all terrible vehicles.

dfeojm-zlib··on One City Saved $5M by Routing School Buses with an Algorithm
Could've used this 30 years ago when I was forcibly-bused across town to a "magnet" school 1.5 hours in each direction (3 hours of busing total). Getting up a 4:45 am and not getting home until after 6 pm as a pre-teen sucked. The big thing is the route they took was very circuitous and served both many stops and schools.
dfeojm-zlib··on The hypersane are among us, if only we are prepared to look
Certainly, there's too much magical thinking, but what the heck is "hypersane?" Is it an absence of conspiracy theories, foolish beliefs, and word-salad? Maybe giving too much attention to the histrionic, the unreasonable and the crazies is part of the problem.
dfeojm-zlib··on San Jose mayor wants to require liability insurance for gun owners
San Jose native. It hasn't been for many years.

Have you ever been to the south-side of Chicago, Detroit or Baltimore? Those are violent cities. San Jose isn't.

dfeojm-zlib··on Escape rooms are big business
I would find a better (defensible) business model that's better than a restaurant that anyone can open. ER's have zero intellectual property and anyone can start such a business for little investment. Do something else (hard/er/expensive/tedious for most people) that lends itself to greater monopolization by you, and that's profitable. (Build something defensible and profitable that customers love.)
dfeojm-zlib··on Ask HN: Why are we consuming thing we don’t need?
My 2 cent manifesto:

Manufactured insecurities mutually-reinforced by peer pressure ("Keeping up with the Jones") is often why. Don't do what you don't want to do; don't be pressured into lemmingification. Everyone else can buy absurdly-overpriced conveniences like tiny bottles of water in disposable plastics. Pack your own lunch, take up freeganing and stay away from "luxuries" like recent MacBook Pro's that are overpriced and designed for unrepairability. Opt-out of the new widget competitive upgrading bandwagon and only acquire just what you need, just when you need it and not before. Also, share services that rent things that bleed you but convey no ownership.

dfeojm-zlib··on Disney Announces $12.99 Bundle for Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+
I'd like Xfinity unlimited 1 Gbps ISP/unlimited landline/260 channels + Hulu + HBO + Netflix + Amazon Prime + Youtube Red + Spotify for one order of magnitude more. That I could get behind.
dfeojm-zlib··on Verizon demands $880 from rural library for just 0.44GB of roaming data
What should be nearly free and ubiquitous is obscenely extorted. Welcome to underprotected vulture cannibal vampire capitali$m with a Verizon lawyer heading the FCC.
dfeojm-zlib··on A mathematician's way of converting miles to kilometers
What's interesting is that the absolute error converges to ~0.5399705049968784% (or a floating-point type or constant imprecision were introduced).
dfeojm-zlib··on Finnish Scientists: Effect of human activity on climate change insignificant
Smdh. The "paper" author may be a fossil fuel shill, crazy person and/or attention-seeker. It's too bad we essentially need a climate change "snopes" to debunk Cato-style nonsense, but I'm infinitely glad folks are doing it on regular basis to smack-down (d/m)isinformation.
dfeojm-zlib··on EPYC SAP-SD 2-tier benchmark results
On the post, if Linus is referring to low-end Xeon and workstation non-Xeon lacking ECC, I think it's completely idiotic. Nearly all infrastructure should be baking in ECC as standard rather than some "option" to not have silent, unknowable, probabilistic corruption that is realistically realizable on a near-daily basis given the orders of magnitude of network, storage and computational volumes of today (and the future) by ever lower tiers of end-users and common examples of network infrastructure.

dfeojm-zlib··on Is Ebola Evolving into a Deadlier Virus?
I wouldn't read it as a false-dichotomy us/them conclusion, but to the literal facts: Philipines, DRC, US, many countries in Europe are becoming hyperpolarized.. with the intent and aggression being laid down, the only difference is the scale and nakedness of violent acts that result. It's definitely social warfare that's being promulgated with aid of the internet by charlatans and crazies alike.
dfeojm-zlib··on Is Ebola Evolving into a Deadlier Virus?
Yeap. The world is flattening as many countries end their brief (and ever briefer) socioeconomic growth. Happenings in one place become not a first-/third-world disparity, but a near-universal condition. InfoWars hate-radio sparking white nationalist stochastic terrorism here, Rwanda hate-radio sparking genocide there.
dfeojm-zlib··on Homeless People Don’t Need an App, They Need a Fucking House
There's a lot of homeless people who can't work as-is; the disabled, unsocialized and mentally ill need support and minor accommodations to try to work and to keep it. Some have substance-abuse issues, but not all. There maybe hygiene issues, but at least in the US, the so-called social workers rarely do a very good job in mentoring or preparing people for transitioning to indoor dwelling lifestyle.

Then there are disabled, elderly, poor people.. they need to not be harangued, forced into work or treated like criminals.

There are few, cool sane homeless people who are just poor but don't have the money or support to mythologically-"pull themselves up from their.." children's story "...bootstraps."

Disclaimer: I chose vehicle dwelling because I'm a cheapskate.

dfeojm-zlib··on US Rules Airlines Must Allow Miniature Horses to Fly as Service Animals
Exactly. This 10^32 times.

It's affluenza, "victimhood"-exploiting, pseudo-disability BS. My elderly and frail grandparents never had a disability placard, yet their neighbors had one for at least 30 years without a real disability; the neighbor had one because they were slightly disabled (low %) per compulsory military service discarge. That's understandable, but what's not is this "special-needs" living security blanket that gives others allergic reactions and creates a nuisance to others.

If the animal can't behave, there oughta be away to give feedback on the customer/animal such that they won't be able to fly with their fluffy nuisance.

dfeojm-zlib··on MoviePass Changed Users’ Passwords on Purpose So They Couldn’t Use the Service
Harkens back to the 90's dot-com era. Good for the customers while it lasts, I guess, but not good overall.
dfeojm-zlib··on US Air Force pauses flights for over a hundred C-130s over ‘atypical’ cracking
This reminds me of a (possibly unrelated) incident involving a C-130A that broke up in flight while serving as a fire-fighter water-bomber. It turns out the original material 7075-T6 wore too quickly and should've been the revised material 7075-T7531. Even C-130B's through C-130E's weren't fully-upgraded with the recommended engineering changes.

dfeojm-zlib··on 9th Circuit says users can sue Facebook over unlawful use of facial recognition
One or more US federal agencies place innocent people who happen to work in a sensitive industry on one or more types of watch list that they scrape associated metadata and facial recognition to detect an association with suspicious people/criminals/persons of interest. I know this for a fact because one of my friends at a big name malware forensics got a call from his manager that the government noticed he was tagged in a picture at a conference after-party with someone who was on a "baddies" watchlist.
dfeojm-zlib··on Food is free if you know where to look
Terrible nutrition though, most def not how to run your body optimally.

Freeganing can save you bank.

Hit up the nicer grocery stores: Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Lunardi's, Nob Hill. Find out their schedules for throwing away perfectly good food because the arbitrary/conservative date on it "expired." One of my friends frequently scores expensive cuts of filet mignon steaks that they just toss (I'm vegetarian when it would increase demand for animal ag).

You don't need to waste time pretending to be interested in Meetups.

Also, if you go in the back of Starbucks and other chains that serve food, maybe an hour before closing time, you can score healthy vittles. (The give my friend all the black bean burritos and chicken salads he can carry.)

Personally, I'd be worried about eating fruit from trees in dense urban areas or near highways due to pollution and also pollution from landscape management (i.e., pesticides).

dfeojm-zlib··on Empress trees absorb about 103 tons of carbon a year per acre
It would only cost about as much as the futile wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to implement Be/CCS solutions at scale to reduce CO2 to pre-industrial levels (280 ppm). The key is sequestration because without that, like the recent virtue-signaling in Africa, growing a bunch of trees in poor soil is pointless: it doesn't stop desertification, increased risk of forest fires and dying/burning trees above ground doesn't capture any net carbon.
dfeojm-zlib··on iTerm2 3.3
Is there any way to disable this scripting API? It seems like an enormous security hole.
