dgwight··on Vue 3.5 released
Me too. The options api enforced grouping and you could lint the ordering of the lifecycle methods, methods, computed, data etc. Thjs made it very easy to know where to find something inside a component

dgwight··on Reddit banned Reddiw's (alternative API) subreddit and author's Reddit account
Did this scrap the website / how did Reddit stop it from working?
dgwight··on Show HN: Cptn.io – open-source integration platform
Is this an open source Segment Analytics competitor? I liked the idea of segment, but the pricing jumped way up after the free tier and I had to remove it
dgwight··on Samsung bans use of A.I. like ChatGPT for employees
I am looking into open sourcing a PWA ChatGPT client for this. But I am not certain how to handle authentication without a backend or each user needing to add their OpenAI key
dgwight··on Anyone else witnessing a panic inside NLP orgs of big tech companies?
Competition still has potential for infinite growth. Even if ai is better than humans at everything, humans will be finite and will likely be better at making people with money feel important. Potentially the future economy is everyone just competing to make the wealthy feel important whether fighting their wars, worshiping at their cults, or working at their “startups”
dgwight··on Bank run on Silicon Valley Bank
I just tried to login to svb.connect.com and it is giving me a popup to scan an QR code from the app. The app now gives me a popup requiring two factor auth (which it hadn’t ever before) with a phone number that I don’t have access to. I luckily don’t have much money in this account. As a bootstrapped founder, what would I need to do to get my money if SVB goes under?
dgwight··on Launch HN: Second (YC W23) – AI bots that add features to web apps
Working with someone else’s code is always slower. As a mostly solo developer, I’m curious if a tool like this could speed me up vs writing code myself and using code I’ve written in the past. I think even in with a small team, specific devs can have complete ownership over different chunks of code.

Having AI write a chunk of your codebase may be kinda like having someone else write it, but then leave the project. Plenty of companies work like this, but they move much slower. Anyways I’m sure tools like this will have a market, but I’m not sure they make sense to be adopted by the fastest moving companies

dgwight··on We're never getting rid of ChatGPT
It’s seems inevitable that the majority of posts and comments will eventually be AI created intended to nudge our thoughts in a direction. I at least, will probably stop reading comments online at that point
dgwight··on Mark Zuckerberg Quietly Buries the Metaverse
Echo VR was the best thing I’ve experienced in vr. I did a community run web event where competitive players coached us for a week before we played a tournament. It was a blast! The combination of teamwork, spatial voice communication, and the hangout room really created community more than anything else virtual.

Echo (which was all I ended up using my quest 2 for) got me through a cold and dark pandemic winter. Then in the spring, I got back into ultimate frisbee which kinda scratched the same sports / community itch and is much better exercise!

dgwight··on Ask HN: Concepts that clicked only years after you first encountered them?
What kind of sweatpants are more expensive than a tuxedo??
dgwight··on Merry Christmas, HN
This is my first summer Christmas (down in Chile), it feels quite different! They also celebrate more today on the 24th and do presents at midnight
dgwight··on Ask HN: Does Hacker News still do in person meet ups?
It’s a long shot, but is anyone in Chile?
dgwight··on Open source projects should run office hours
Hey! I started a platform called Otechie to help open source projects build consulting businesses. I believe this is the perfect way for open source projects to monetize, because they are the worlds experts in something lots of businesses want help with.

We’ve been working with the Nuxt.js team and iterating on the product for over a year. It has become a full featured live chat, and invoicing system, with a contact widget for onboarding clients.

Feel free to email me at dylan@otechie.com if you’re interested

dgwight··on Seven tough lessons from ten years in bootstrapped business
I and many self funded entrepreneurs are too cheap for this.

The best thing I’ve done to meet people is hosting in-person Indie Hackers meetups.

dgwight··on Show HN: Otechie – Search Freelancers on GitHub by NPM Package
Freelancer marketplaces tend to be targeted at non-technical people hiring freelancers. Instead, I want to be able to see who has used specific tools I'll need and how they've used them.

Otechie indexes freelancers on Github based off of the contents of their public repos manifest files (currently only package.json). Besides other languages, I plan to add the ability to search for developers who have used services such as Circleci, Heroku, or Docker.

dgwight··on Ask HN: Do software dev mentors really exist?
I was extremely lucky to get to work one-on-one with someone much more experienced than me when I was starting out. I interned at a startup and was making the iPhone app with one of the original engineers.

I had already gotten pretty good at the slamming my head against things until they work part. So I could eventually make something that functioned, but my code quality was terrible.

Where having a mentor really helped was becoming more disciplined, seeing good code, and learning new tools and services.

dgwight··on Ask HN: Is there an email service that sends email by entering/clicking a URL
Do you want to put all of the information in the url? This would have privacy issues and I doubt a company would have a service that does this.

Instead of getting a url posting to a url with a body will encrypt the data. This would be a pretty standard email api service.

There are many of these, but I personally use https://sendgrid.com

dgwight··on Ask HN: Would your business pay for supported open source?
I’m building something along these lines. Rather than offering support contracts, I am aiming to make doing hourly paid remote support as easy as possible for open source devs.

As for businesses, Otechie is focused on startups, who often have more money than time/experience. For me personally, I have often spent days in frustration, when the right person could have helped me though quickly.

If you’re curious, here’s a link: https://otechie.com

dgwight··on Ask HN: What are the best practices for an open source project?
Github made an open source guide that has a lot of useful articles. A lot of it is focused around building a community around the project: https://opensource.guide
dgwight··on Ask HN: What do GitHub stars mean to you when evaluating a project, if anything?
If there are competing projects that I am unfamiliar with, stars count and last commit date decide which I try using first. If it works, I go with it.

I may star both repos in case an issue comes up and I need to try something else. I use stars to “save” repos so I can find them later if I forget the names.

I am a bootstrapped founder and I find this to be the quickest approach.

dgwight··on Ask HN: What services and technologies do you use to build web app?
Frontend: Vue Webpack CircleCI S3 Cloudfront (for EV SSL) or Cloudflare (for easy SSL)

Backend: Express, Node, Heroku Heroku CI

DB: Mongo Redis Both on Compose

Other Services Include: Stripe Twilio

dgwight··on Ask HN: What's the best way to make money as a developer without writing code?
You could do paid technical support. I’m working on a platform for doing paid support for your code: https://otechie.com
dgwight··on Ask HN: What are you using to bill one-off online calls/meetings?
I’m working on something like this: https://otechie.com. Otechie is starting off focused on support from open source maintainers, but will cover your use case.

What are you helping people with?

dgwight··on Ask HN: Who's angel investing?
Haha woops, I think having the startups present themselves would be better because they have more relevant information and I think potentially having multiple investors looking at a startup at once would help create pressure for them to actually invest.
dgwight··on Ask HN: Open source developers, would you do paid support for your projects?
I agree that the bounty-stye approach works well for encouraging new development. I'm thinking about the times when you get stuck: the community boards often do not have exactly what you need and it can be tough to explain your issue and slow to need to wait for replies.

In these cases, having a synchronous discussion with the right person could save a lot of time. For smaller projects, I think a pay-per-time approach would work better than support contracts.
