differentView··on Billionaire Is Reported Seized from Hong Kong Hotel and Taken into China
He might think he can buy his way out.

If the story gets too big, the Chinese government might be forced to make an example of him.

differentView··on The Immigration Ban Is a Headfake, and We’re Falling for It
Although I agree this is likely a setup for more to come, I disagree that this is a "headfake".

A "headfake" implies it achieves nothing if one's opponent ignores it. In this case, if there was no pushback, then he would have successfully banned green card holders from seven nations. Then it would receive even less coverage/reaction when he adds an eighth nation, a ninth, a tenth, and so on... Pretty soon, you'll only have legal immigration from nations Steve Bannon deems worthy.

differentView··on Standing up for what's right
Who was blocked from coming back under Bush?
differentView··on I sent an email to a monk in Nepal and my blog was hacked by the Chinese
>The content left little doubt on the origin of the attack.

That's quite a leap.

differentView··on Three teen sisters who win medals in coding competitions
>As for my sisters, if a guy says girls can’t code as well as guys, then my sisters just say “well, my sister wins competitions.”

>I’ve won 2 bronze medals at IOI, 1 bronze at CEOI, 2 silvers at IZhO. Mari, Ani and I competed in HackerRank Women’s Cup as a team last year, and we ranked third place! Some companies that sponsored the event even sent us a letter after the contest, but I had to tell them that we’re too young right now to work for them.

What records did they crush? They didn't even win any of the competitions they mentioned.

differentView··on AP: South Korea covered up mass abuse, killings of 'vagrants'
Off topic, but when a story involves multiple people with the same surname, they really should write out their full names at all times instead of just "Park" or "Kim".
differentView··on Chinese Researchers Invent New Police Car That Can Scan Faces
Any place that uses the death penalty as quickly and frequently as China isn't too concerned about false positives.
differentView··on Lotteries: America's $70B Shame
>Turning $5MM into $10MM is inevitable.

What do you mean?

differentView··on Apple Encryption Engineers, If Ordered to Unlock iPhone, Might Resist
After those engineers quit, Apple should hire a bunch of terrible engineers with impressive resumes (bonus if they used to work for the FBI) and put them to work on this.
differentView··on One of the FBI’s Major Claims in the iPhone Case Is Fraudulent
> Why the FBI can easily work around “auto-erase”

If it's so easy, then the ACLU should have no problem demonstrating it with an actual iPhone 5c.

differentView··on Yahoo is officially for sale
> they have a lot of great products

They do?

differentView··on The Tragedy of Ethiopia's Internet
This is the same reason I stopped reading The Economist. Great witty writing, until they write about my country and get lots of things wrong. I have to assume it's the same with their articles about industries and places I am not familiar with.
differentView··on Building AI
I think you're overestimating "all the machine power in the world".
differentView··on Building AI
How does that disprove his statement?
differentView··on Why NSA Surveillance Scares Me
I hope I am wrong, but I can't imagine a modern day Hoover, with better surveillance, to not have already placed blackmailed politicians in all key political positions and is effectively ruling the United States.
differentView··on How the 'hoverboards' took off in spite of laws against them
No one travelling on a sidewalk should go so fast that they are unable to avoid a stationary object.

Edit: extra word

differentView··on Could a Bank Deny Your Loan Based on Your Facebook Friends?
This would reduce exceptions.
differentView··on Could a Bank Deny Your Loan Based on Your Facebook Friends?
They make money from the float. http://www.wikinvest.com/wiki/Float
differentView··on For San Francisco Cab Drivers, Once-Treasured Medallions Now a Burden
>Don't forget that the "innovator" is operating illegally in many jurisdictions and is actively trying to buy protection (i.e., lobbying).

Don't forget their most unfair practice of kicking out rude and bad drivers that provide terrible customer service. If the cabs can do that, people would like them too, but that's just a totally ridiculous thought.

differentView··on Volkswagen Chief Martin Winterkorn Resigns Amid Emissions Scandal
If that's true, then there's no way government officials weren't bribed and need to be prosecuted.
differentView··on A New Face for Pebble
Do people who wear those watches just wet their finger tips when washing their hands?
differentView··on Volkswagen Stock Plummets as CEO Apologizes for Emissions Cheat
That only applies to the average citizen, not executives of large corporations. They have more in common with foreign corporate executives than with their own citizens.
differentView··on Inside Popcorn Time – the world's fastest growing piracy site
I don't use LinkedIn, does it tell you who visited your profile? Have other developers been visited by the WB lawyer? Maybe they're just checking all LinkedIn profiles of developers with certain skills.
differentView··on Ashley Madison founder steps down
Still relatively easy with some prepaid cards that let's you use whatever name and address. Also some billing processors don't even check the address.
differentView··on “One billion people used Facebook in a single day”
No one pays me and I had over 20 FB accounts just to play games. A lot of games give you in-game rewards for referring your friends and allow friends to gift each other in-game items.

Edit: And most of my friends have two or three real FB accounts, one for close friends, one for older relatives/their parents' friends, and one for work acquaintances/bosses. I am in the minority in only maintaining one real account.

differentView··on 13,000 fall into homelessness every month in L.A. County
>Given that 49% of the US population get government benefits [2], this checks out.

>[2] Census: 49% of Americans Get Gov’t Benefits; 82M in Households on Medicaid http://cnsnews.com/news/article/terence-p-jeffrey/census-49-...

According to that page, they included Social Security (49.9 million people) and unemployment (5.1 million people) as government benefits.

differentView··on My wife found my email in the Ashley Madison database
In 99% of real world situations, the girlfriend or wife will either believe you or not. Once any experts are hired, the relationship is already over, no matter what the investigation concludes.
differentView··on Who Hacked Ashley Madison?
Maybe some of them fear that using professional escort services make them bigger targets for blackmail or their information will be used to cut deals when the escort service is busted. Also, some may be looking for more than sex with professionals.
differentView··on M, a personal digital assistant inside Facebook Messenger
Maybe after seeing their smart phone flopped, they're going with an inside-out approach.
differentView··on Who Hacked Ashley Madison?
