digb··on I ditched the algorithm for RSS
Been on this tip for 6 months, glad to hear i am not alone
digb··on I ditched the algorithm for RSS
It's because you are not an Average Human and so averaging everyone's humor doesn't really work for you. I think this is precisely why Instagram and tiktok are actually more addictive, they give you these personalized algos that are powered by your personal engagement stats, vs Reddit which just sort of sorts by other people's opinions
digb··on Companies can no longer silence laid-off employees in exchange for severance
There are other rights (forced arb) that you sign away when you sign a voluntary severance
digb··on The story BCG offered me $16,000 not to tell (2010)
I mean they're basically a college student given the YOE and where this was published, sounds like the kid got mugged by reality. But yea, definitely jaw-droppingly naive.
digb··on Show HN: TinyClock – a tiny true 5-arch universal Mac OS X single-binary GUI app
What does 5-arch mean? Single Google yielded nothing (which may be more of a comment on Google's quality as of late)
digb··on What I Learned at Clubhouse
I see a lot of these retrospectives from companies that (to a certain degree) failed to live up to their hype. I don’t want to invalidate the sort of lessons you can only learn by living through these hyper scaling phases, but I sometimes wonder if some of the lessons folks learned are potentially why things went wrong?
digb··on Ask HN: Examples of large acquisitions that did not ruin the acquired company?
Having previously worked at SFDC, I would not wager that it's much more dynamic than Tableau.
digb··on What Drop-In API Observability Looks Like, Pre-Launch and Post-Launch
"Almost immediately after installation, Akita provided all the endpoints’ requirements, as well as some examples of expected values, which allowed us to better understand the service that the contractors had built. Once we could understand the data flow (including not only the request body, but also headers and authorization), improving the system became a lot easier. After we had the mapping,"

Interesting... could be cool to see a value-add service on top of Akita or another Obs vendor that just inspects req/res payloads and generates OpenAPI specs based off what was observed. I can't count how many times I've dropped into teams and tried to piece together their API contracts just to realize... they don't have specs! Having to then turn around and reconstruct them backwards based off code spelunking and maybe some design docs is... frustrating.

digb··on No Refrigerant Left Behind
I really really love how this post touches on the bullshit that is the carbon credit market. Question: what incentive do BigCos have to buy your "high quality" carbon offsets vs the inferior ones you mentioned? Do you price cheaper per ton of CO2 credited? At the end of the day they're just trying to comply at the cheapest price possible, right?
digb··on 2022 Cloud Report
was discussing this the other day with colleagues. you google CockroachDB and are immediately served Yugabyte and PlanetScale, which are imo much "hotter" right now
digb··on 2022 Cloud Report
"we" meaning you are an author on the report, or just at your job?
digb··on Purdue Starts Comprehensive Semiconductor Degree Programs in U.S.
Doctors. The US is way understaffed for doctors.
digb··on Purdue Starts Comprehensive Semiconductor Degree Programs in U.S.
This seems like a smart cross-section of the existing ECE major and IE majors offered at Purdue, and would likely be a good way to lighten up the major (IE was considered easier than the other programs when I was in undergrad).
digb··on FTC fines Twitter $150M for using 2FA phone numbers for ad targeting
Instagram used to do this too
digb··on Tech Layoff Tracker
Tech companies are like lewdness, we know them when we see them. I’m sure Maersk and Walmart rely a lot on tech and engineers, but no one is calling them tech companies.
digb··on Nobody will admit the best novel of our generation is about football
If anyone here likes this book I highly recommend his documentary series, Fighting In The Age of Loneliness (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qK3FHjiwb_8)
digb··on Logitech MX Master 3 vs. 2S Teardown
The MX Master 2 or whatever has been absolute trash for me on my work mac. There's the standard issue with macs and third party mice where the "inertia" or whatever of the mouse feels off, but more than that there has to be some sort of interference because the thing just floats and jitters constantly. Completely unusable, I gave it away to one of our finance guys.
digb··on Collaborative Software That’s Wary of the Cloud
Didn’t Google Wave first use CRDT’s? Well before 2011?
digb··on The Future of DEV (dev.to)
I've been hoping to see them take this direction for a while. They've fostered a great environment and built out a robust platform for "drop-in" communities. I also like that it seems like they're trying to scale out and ratchet up the amount of advanced content.
digb··on Anil Dash on the Facebook Brand Update
Does the new logo (wordmark?) remind anyone else of the old Uber logo (maybe the current one? I can't keep up anymore and don't really care). This branding feels somehow more evil.
digb··on The Qualified Manifesto on Hiring Software Developers
My key point every time my team discusses hiring: If you think your take-home project takes N hours, add 1-1.5. You already know the context, and are underestimating the difficulty even if you've run through it before.
digb··on Ask HN: How was life for a regular dev during the dot com burst?
I think the other commenter is probably closer to accuracy. Here in NYC, offshoring to Chile/DR and other countries in the same timezone is surprisingly popular, even for early stage startups. The idea that people will just immigrate is a bit of a stretch. Coming from an immigrant family I will tell you that some of the most talented people stayed behind while others got lucky. My $0.02, just like anyone else's, and I know people currently in India launching really great code schools, but the talent argument never held in my mind.
digb··on Ask HN: How was life for a regular dev during the dot com burst?
Why do you think the outsourcing never got quite as bad as everyone expected?
digb··on Highlights from “The Checklist Manifesto” by Atul Gawande
It was a fine book, but this summary serves the point perfectly while also being way shorter. My working assumption with all these popular books is they could be half (or less) as long and retain effectiveness.
digb··on I'm Resigning as a Stack Overflow Community Elected Moderator
Can someone give me the ELI5 or subreddit drama of what is going on over at SO? This is the second post on the subject I've seen.
digb··on Haskell in Production
If I remember correctly, Co-Star, the horoscope app, runs Haskell on the backend.
digb··on I Miss Rails
I didn’t mean it as a slur! When I wrote .NET, the applications I was working in were massively large and complex, and so mostly what I was working on was optimizing small bits and pieces, and they allowed me to focus ON optimizing those small bits and pieces, because they were what mattered in that context. Rails let’s me focus on the big picture, because that’s what matters in my current context. Express had me working on stuff that I didn’t REALLY care about/want to know about in the context I was in.
digb··on I Miss Rails
I’ll say this: I came to Rails from Node (and before that .NET but with a way smaller scope of responsibility), and I am thoroughly convinced the author is correct. I couldn’t estimate for shit in my first few months at this job (once I had ramped) because Rails makes things that would’ve taken at least twice as long easy to do, even without gems. Plus, I have seen not even a third of the compatibility issues between our version of the framework (bit old) and up-to-date games as I saw when I was writing Node full time. Rails is the first non-“enterprise” framework I’ve felt let’s me focus on the correct level of concern for my current needs.
digb··on Ask HN: Can companies ask for private info before any interview/offer?
Same with New York as of November of 2017, I believe.
digb··on Apple blocks Facebook from running its internal iOS apps
Apparently they can't check what's for lunch, so pretty catastrophic IMO.
