dimastopel··on Ian's Secure Shoelace Knot
I use the Ian Knot [0] (also called the World's Fastest Shoelace Knot) with my Vivobarefoot. Moved to it from Bunny Ears method at the age of 45. Never thought I'll switch the way I tie my shoelaces at such and age.

same result on my arch machine as well.

GCP was down recently as well
dimastopel··on MinIO stops distributing free Docker images
Shameless plug: try Minimus! Minimalistic and always updated container images. We have the MinIO image and it is always up to date. https://www.minimus.io/
dimastopel··on Ask HN: Can you recommend a good nuclear power plant simulator?
I know Rimworld and love it! I assume the mod is somehow similar to nuclear power management in Factorio?

dimastopel··on Does -1/12 protect us from infinity?
A new angle at this I didn’t hear about yet
dimastopel··on Can Microsoft Flight Simulator help me learn to fly or make me a better pilot?
I just got my PPL a year ago. My instructor did a survey among all students who got the license and among other things asked 1) how many flight hours did it take you to get the license 2) did you play with a simulator in your spare time. There was a clear inverse correlation between the two, meaning that those who did play with the simulator had to use less hours to get the license.
dimastopel··on Cryptographers solve decades-old privacy problem
Imagine a search engine that gives you results without knowing your search query.
dimastopel··on Tell HN: WhatsApp Is Down
Yes, https://downdetector.com/status/whatsapp/
dimastopel··on Fastmail Down?
I get 503 Service Unavailable but their status page [0] says all green. [0] https://www.fastmailstatus.com/
dimastopel··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
I very much liked the concept of 0x10c. Wish someone would make it happen. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/0x10c
dimastopel··on Roblox Down Again?
I get 503 Service Unavailable No server is available to handle this request.
dimastopel··on Irish health service hit by cyber attack
It looks that the majority of recent ransomware is stealing and publishing private data, instead of blocking access to data. So DLP like solutions are required in addition to posture management.
dimastopel··on Time-lapse of a single cell transforming into a salamander (2019)
How does each cell know it exact location to decide which specific cell to become (i.e. which part of the dna to read)? Especially at the very early stage?
dimastopel··on Humanly Traversable Wormholes
Would a wormhole enable escaping our local group, in theory? From what I understand the current assumption is that we will never be able to travel beyond our local group because of the accelerated universe expansion.
dimastopel··on Mysterious deep-space flashes repeat every 157 days
"A for Andromeda" by Fred Hoyle develops this concept further.
dimastopel··on Ask HN: How to rediscover the joy of programming?
For me it is either math + algorithmic challenges, like projecteuler [1] (which is amazing), or going back to system programming, like trying to write something worthy without libc. Like others have commented, I do need to do this every now and then (~once a year)

dimastopel··on Fastmail Labels Beta
Same here. Family of four + some members of the extended family. I am doing IT for all and would be happy to move everybody to fastmail under the same custom domain.
dimastopel··on Fastmail Labels Beta
The problem I frequently encounter is with emails incorrectly classified as spam. Once a month I go to spam folder and find few emails that were not spam. Even though I click "not spam" on each, I don't feel algorithm is getting any better with time.
dimastopel··on Largest Study of Its Kind Identifies Health Benefits of Fasting
The key issue for me here is that I still can't easily get a more or less accurate calorie count for a random meal in a restaurant near my workplace. Because of that I need to stick to a very limited menu which feels so depressing that I prefer ADF over it. Is there a solution I miss?
dimastopel··on Molecule produced during fasting has anti-aging effect on vascular system
Thank you for the elaborated answer!
dimastopel··on Molecule produced during fasting has anti-aging effect on vascular system
Thanks! Dark leafy greens make total sense, but why sauna is good before the fast? Also how long and how frequent your fasts usually are? 5 days 4 times a year as Dr Longo suggests or something else? BTW I did FMD twice and the feel of hunger doesn't go away. I also suspect this happens because of the constant food intake.
dimastopel··on Molecule produced during fasting has anti-aging effect on vascular system
Given that Dr. Longo promotes a diet that contains some calorie intake (~500 daily), why did you decide on water only fast? I am trying to choose between those two options myself.
dimastopel··on PoC||GTFO 0x18 [pdf]
How do I get the second version? I see only one link.
dimastopel··on EFail – Vulnerabilities in end-to-end encryption technologies OpenPGP and S/MIME
Robert Hansen just sent the following email to the gnupg-users list:

to GnuPG-Users

[taps the mike]

Hi. I maintain the official GnuPG FAQ. So let me start off by answering a question that is certainly about to be asked a lot: "Should we be worried about OpenPGP, GnuPG, or Enigmail? The EFF's advising us to uninstall it!"

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/05/attention-pgp-users-ne...

Werner saw a preprint of this paper some time ago. I saw it recently. Patrick Brunschwig of Enigmail saw it. None of us are worried. Out of respect for the paper authors I will skip further comment until such time as the paper is published.

It would've been nice if EFF had reached out to us for comment, rather than apparently only talking to the paper authors. We hope they'll reach out next time.

dimastopel··on What people actually do at WeWork
We started our company at WeWork and moved to our offices when we were around 7 people. It was a very convenient solution for a young company that just want to concentrate on what is important (the product). We never participated in any social activities and hardly knew out neighbors (if at all). I'd do it the same way again.
dimastopel··on Show HN: Hiding code from Git diff
This will be fixed. Thanks for the feedback.
