dindobre··on Microsoft CEO of AI Your online content is 'freeware' fodder for training models
Yes
dindobre··on Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the U.S., allowing him to go free
Couldn't have said it better
dindobre··on My Windows Computer Just Doesn't Feel Like Mine Anymore
One example would be Proton EasyAntiCheat RunTime
dindobre··on My Windows Computer Just Doesn't Feel Like Mine Anymore
Pitching in to say that there is some proton stuff to enable the draconian anticheats to work on linux if one is keen on running such a thing.
dindobre··on Barcelona will eliminate tourist apartments
You nailed it with the resource curse.
dindobre··on Barcelona will eliminate tourist apartments
It's not even poor people, in some "advanced economies" we're getting to a point where income means very little, and inheriting means a lot. I've only seen such a lack of empathy in teenagers or silver spoons.
dindobre··on Testing Generative AI for Circuit Board Design
Thanks, will try to give it a read this weekend. Would you say that diffusion is the architectural change that opened up CO for neural nets? Haven't followed this particular niche in a while
dindobre··on Testing Generative AI for Circuit Board Design
Using neural networks to solve combinatorial or discrete problems is a waste of time imo, but I'd be more than happy if somebody could convince me of the opposite.
dindobre··on EU Council has withdrawn the vote on Chat Control
I hope they don't use Hungary as the scapegoat to pass this kind of stuff, the fact that something like Chat Control is even discussed is gross already.
dindobre··on Safe Superintelligence Inc.
If we manage to harness the ego energy transpiring from some people working on "AI" we should be halfway there!
dindobre··on Private Cloud Compute: A new frontier for AI privacy in the cloud
This feels like the biggest part of the news to me
dindobre··on Economic Termites: Monopolies not noticeable enough for most of us
I feel like the gist of this could have been "rent seekers bad", something I'd strongly agree with. A non-trivial part of society is checked out of real work and milking others dry because of existing conditions or acquired leverage.
dindobre··on Show HN: ChatGPT UI for rabbit holes
Damn, is there some SAAS like notion or an Obsidian plugin to be able to take notes like this?
dindobre··on EU Approves AI Act
As somebody from Europe I can't agree more about the moral superiority thing. Feels like Europe has cultivated its own version of "saving face" during the last decades.
dindobre··on ICC prosecutor seeks arrest warrants against Sinwar and Netanyahu for war crimes
The Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact could also be considered an integration of German and Russian geo-political interests to achieve a lasting peace in the region. Just surrender.
dindobre··on Germany solar power output jumps to record highs
I see, makes sense.
dindobre··on Germany solar power output jumps to record highs
Would love to understand more about your last statement.
dindobre··on A Pattern Language
I've read the book before but I guess I kinda forgot about this point. Scary.
dindobre··on A Pattern Language
"Four-Story Limit (21)" "There is abundant evidence to show that high buildings make people crazy."

Does anyone know more?

dindobre··on OpenAI: Model Spec
Same, it saddens me that some people are convinced that to have a safer society we need "harmless" (as in, ignorant) people rather than good people with an interest and a stake in the wellbeing of said society. Bad actors will have access to whatever information anyway.
dindobre··on Airlines required to refund passengers for canceled, delayed flights
Had a similar experience with Turkish Airlines, and I definitively agree on avoiding planes as much as possible, long-distance trains all the way.
dindobre··on End of the Line? Saudi Arabia to scale back plans for desert megacity
Thanks for taking the time to reply, really interesting stuff.
dindobre··on End of the Line? Saudi Arabia to scale back plans for desert megacity
I find your second paragraph especially interesting, do you have a source (e.g. a book) to get deeper into this?
dindobre··on End of the Line? Saudi Arabia to scale back plans for desert megacity
I didn't know that, but I guess that's not too surprising.
dindobre··on End of the Line? Saudi Arabia to scale back plans for desert megacity
Will the world's criminals start storing their money there or did you mean something else with Switzerland of the Middle East?
dindobre··on Twitter's pivot to x.com is a gift to phishers
Glad the site is rotting tbh, it wasn't great before and now it's so full of bots and propaganda it feels surreal. Posting and/or reading from Ukraine is even more surreal.
dindobre··on More Agents Is All You Need: LLMs performance scales with the number of agents
Smells similar to Sutton's bitter lesson!
dindobre··on AWS Makes Cloud Formation Stack Creation Up to 40% Faster
Came by to say this. Had to deal with CF stacks at $PREVIOUS_JOB and 40% is just not enough to remove it from the "oh god I have to work with this again" area of my mind.
dindobre··on Fugitive Wirecard COO Jan Marsalek exposed as decade-long GRU spy
Indeed it doesn't. Countless other interesting facts that relate Germany and Russia, politicians, banks, "journalists", etc. We do have to remember that half of it was under USSR influence, to be candid. In my opinion, the war in Ukraine exposed an enormous European mess when it comes to scrutiny and the difference between perceived corruption and reality.
dindobre··on The Era of 1-bit LLMs: ternary parameters for cost-effective computing
Makes sense!
