dinkblam··on Could a modern chess engine on a Pentium have defeated Kasparov in 1996?
then why is voice calling still awful? in the 90s they made advertisements for "crystal clear voices" for their mobile networks, these days it is still a pipe dream...
dinkblam··on BYD sold more EVs last month than the US did all quarter
> yet to see an actual premium EV akin

thats because there is zero demand as has been all over the news the past years. the european and especially german car industry wasted billions on EV strategies that now have to be rewound because it turns out there is basically zero demand for expensive EVs. people that can afford expensive cars want ICE.

dinkblam··on When did Google get so weird?
isnt that why we invented religion?
dinkblam··on Where's the Beef?: The lab-grown-meat revolution that wasn't
it is sad how the lobbying of old evil industries like tobacco and animal-killing can convince the politicians and the public to outlaw and demonize their less-evil competition like vaping and lab-grown meat to make sure to hold on to the status quo.

but why write more than 7000 words to communicate a simple point (lab-grown meat was promised 1-2 decades ago but failed to arrive and won't arrive in the foreseeable future)?

dinkblam··on Just Bury Your Trash
thats assuming the plastic bag is used once, but i've always reused them, sometimes had the same bags for 10 years

however i have never re-used a paper bag because they are awfully loud and cannot be compressed. it is the worst kind of bag.

dinkblam··on You Probably Don't Get Why Stripe Bought OpenRouter
> Moving money naively is a commodity; > banks did it for centuries at rock-bottom margins

must have misspelt "ridiculous margins"

dinkblam··on App Store Rejection of the Week: Dark Hours
overselling the safety is very euphemistic

many years ago we made a list of malware apps on the Mac App Store:

https://www.corecode.io/_malware_on_the_macappstore.html

(yes, the list was made after being disgruntled because totally legitimate apps were refused for nonsense reasons just like in this story)

Colors are a a continuous spectrum, yet we put them in a bunch of categories.
dinkblam··on What does Jeff Bezos think is going to happen?
on the other hand 14 years of usage of a ~100$ device sounds ok. these days you need to be happy if things last more than a few months…

> cars are the leading source of carbon emissions.

WTF? cars are less than 7% and even including trucks we are barely around 11%. when you look at greenhouse effect instead of "just carbon", the percentages are even tinier.

If you are looking for leading sources of climate change look at electricity/heat, industry and agriculture.

just because (bad) politicians are always talking about cars when talking about climate it doesn't mean the are actually a meaningful component. it is smoke and mirros…

dinkblam··on The case for physical media ownership
Many things are confused here. Why would you want to "own" media, physical or otherwise? What you actually want is

a.) to be able to use the media however you wish. no ownership is required, just download it b.) to give back to the content creator to thank for his creation. no ownership is required here either, you can send him money, go on a concert, etc

trying to merge those two points into one (=>purchase the media) is not necessarily the best way as you might end up with something you cannot properly use (DRM, etc) while not really giving that much to the creator anyway (90% for the label, wtf?)

dinkblam··on The deadly rise of giant trucks and SUVs
All of the problems (high hood, bad visibility downwards) are fixed by sports cars and especially mid-engined and rear-engined sports cars. Plus, the brake distance is much lower.
