djinn··on Show HN: Open-source implementation of DSec Paper by DeepSeek
Containerised and quick access is not model studio problem. It is just as much a problem for inference customers running agents. Opensource implementation of DSec Agent execution system with Python SDK and Firecracker MicroVMs
djinn··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
Study certainly is biased since primary data comes from single unnamed organisation - likely MD Anderson. With 3 out of 4 authors of the paper from same institute makes more objective title "An employer's internal Leadership Institute analyzes its own employee-engagement and HR data and concludes that its remote employees have better well-being."
djinn··on I returned to AWS, and was reminded why I left
AWS has been systematically hollowed out of technical staff since 2023. Either through mass layoffs or via 2 cycles of performance improvement plans. Often I find most skilled peers in presales or support are not with AWS whilst the ones with most ambiguous work history have been retained at promoted.

Use AWS at your own risk, Paul Vixie is not there to save you.

djinn··on Enthusiast breaks into smallest HDD with only phone and OpenClaw
Enthusiast reverse engineers world’s smallest HDD to access data with help from an old Nokia N91 and OpenClaw By Mark Tyson published 17 March 26 Maker Will Whang designed the MK4001MTD USB Bridge to facilitate the use of the world’s smallest (0.85-inch) mechanical hard drives, originally released by Toshiba in 2004.
djinn··on [dead]
My decade old WD MyCloud still works perfectly. The drives are healthy. The network functions. But the mobile app stopped connecting years ago;Western Digital sunset the cloud services without warning. The hardware outlived the business relationship.

Meanwhile, my family defaulted to iCloud at $168/year. Forever.

That's when I understood: In 2026, your hardware doesn't fail. Your vendor relationships do.

djinn··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2025)
I applied for the role. It did not have any place to state "found us through Hacker News".
djinn··on What Would Be the Tech Due Diligence Approach of A16Z for AI?
In December 2024, three out of five A16Z investments were AI startups, with the remaining two focusing on a Gaming-focused Browser and a NeoBank. This strategic allocation not only underscores Andreessen Horowitz’s (A16Z) confidence in the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) but also highlights their commitment to diversifying their investment portfolio across high-growth and emerging sectors. However, while AI presents unparalleled opportunities, it also introduces a unique set of challenges and risks that surpass those typically associated with conventional Software as a Service (SaaS) ventures. Understanding and navigating these complexities requires a meticulous and comprehensive technical due diligence framework—one that VCs can adopt and adapt to ensure informed and strategic investment decisions.
djinn··on Yayoi Kusama and the Dialectics of Art, Branding, and Ephemerality
Yayoi Kusama’s polka-dotted world has become a global phenomenon. Often credited with revolutionizing avant-garde art in the 1960s, Kusama today is more recognizable than many contemporary artists, due not only to her prolific oeuvre but also her branding savvy. This essay examines the trajectory of her work as it drifts away from the traditional mission of art—arguably to interrogate, critique, or reflect societal truths—and instead positions itself as a self-contained, immersive spectacle reminiscent of luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton or Coach. In this context, the viewer is less “audience” and more “consumer,” and Kusama’s galleries become shopping-mall-like environments where the merchandisable qualities of her installations often overshadow any profound social or historical commentary.
djinn··on Eminent demise of storage innovation or not
Storage Engines are hard. Not impossible to create but reasonably complex that a high performance engine will require a small team more than an year to build and make production ready. I don't have a small team and I don't have a year. I asked Tommy, what are my options mate? His advice was, not to build storage engine yourself at outset. He proposed three options and I illustrate each with its merits.

djinn··on Gigablast Search Engine, Now Open Source (C/C++)
Still an alternative to nutch and friends
djinn··on Mozilla Playdoh, a web application template based on Django
It looks great. I wonder, with availability of project templates 1.4 onwards, how would this be seen.
djinn··on The AMD Fusion is not my ideal machine.
Sadly in my case, default driver does not work with HDMI and it does not recognize my 24" monitor. The ATI official driver does recognize and it does use 1900x1200 resolution but only with large black border.
djinn··on A crash course in UX
Is this Hacker News effect?
djinn··on I am a programmer
The last point about in-formalisation of the discipline is not incidental. I think that it is sort of specific to the community that Hacker News hosts.
djinn··on I am a programmer
I just think the debate about identifying oneself "as", like pointed by other comments, is specific to a cultural context. In India specifically "programming" is as much about sector of work like "Information Technology" as it would be individuals profession. So most of the time "programmer" or "software engineer" inter-changeably explains the where one works for someone outside the profession. In case the person shows further interest, one could go further into what exactly is the span of work. So unlike Patrick's essay tries to convey, "programmer" per se is not a restrictive definition.
