dkarp··on Printytron – Describe a part, get a printable STL
First print went well, left some feedback via onsite form. I'll be using this a lot more!
dkarp··on Printytron – Describe a part, get a printable STL
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for and so far appears to work much better than my attempts with Claude code and opencad.

Tomorrow I’ll try the real test… printing an object. But so far I’m impressed how smart and accurate the models are.

The site is really well polished already and thanks for the loginless option to try it out. I appreciate you building and sharing this

dkarp··on Show HN: I spent 4 years bootstrapping a financial planning tool to 30k MAUs
Yes, if it'd be possible to switch to another international preset on a milestone then that'd get us mostly the way there. I already have a milestone for the move where I sell current house, factor in moving expenses and buying car/house in retirement country.

I am not really sure the consequences of e.g. withdrawing from a US 401k while UK resident (as a US citizen). But treating the 401k as an analogous UK pension for withdrawal purposes would probably be correct enough for forecasting.

Hi Kyle,

I'm a big fan of projectionlabs and have recommended it to a few people. It's the best tool I've found in this niche. You've done a great job on the UI to keep it simple while being extremely powerful and I love moving milestones around and seeing how things react.

The Tax side is where things get interesting/complicated. In my case, I'll be retiring in a different country to where I'm working and so the tax for drawdowns doesn't really work

dkarp··on DoorDash apparently using client side source of truth
Good question, I just checked my credit card statement and they billed what the UI said they would...

I can also still see the orders in the my order history with the incorrect amount

I get spam messages on iMessage and never on WhatsApp, weird
dkarp··on Transcript of taped conversations among German nuclear physicists (1945)
It's not clear to me if the full transcripts are available here but I found the book of transcripts at my college library during my studies and found it fascinating.

Looks like you can now buy it on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Operation-Epsilon-Farm-Hall-Transcrip...

dkarp··on Judge rules Wyoming corner crossers did not trespass
wow I didn't think they meant checkerboard pattern literally. I'd be interested to know why the land was partitioned that way across such a wide area
dkarp··on Ask HN: Tell me about how you bombed a technical interview
Was that for an undergraduate at Cambridge?
dkarp··on Kerbal Space Program 2 Early Access Is Out Now
I also saw this and was disappointed about it. He said it multiple times, "20fps, it's not a problem" when it clearly is a problem
dkarp··on Kerbal Space Program 2 Early Access Is Out Now
To be fair, it doesn't run well, or sometimes at all, on Windows
dkarp··on Kerbal Space Program 2 Early Access Is Out Now
It's too early to say. The devs have said they considered extending KSP1 but chose to rebuild the game from scratch to enable things that never would have been possible in KSP1. Namely, acceleration during time warp.

So I think it's fair to expect that KSP2 today will be lower on the y-axis of features than KSP1, but has a greater slope and will pass it and keep going at some time in the future.

It's anyone's guess when that time in the future will be

dkarp··on Biggest Barrier to Biking Is a Fear of Cars
There's one particular bike lane on my commute that I hate. There are cars parked all along the road and it's a single line placed 3-4ft away from the average car. Any above average sized vehicle or poorly parked vehicle takes up some or all of the "bike lane".

I refuse to cycle in it, but I can feel the judgement of every driver trying to pass me. I would much rather that cycle lane wasn't there.

dkarp··on ‘That girl is going to get herself killed’ (2022)
I used to live on a popular surfing beach in Australia. Every day people would see the surfers and think it was a good place to swim and get into trouble (In general, if you see surfers then it's a bad place to swim). Always swim near the lifeguard's tower and pay attention to the flags
dkarp··on Ask HN: Anyone having issues with job applicant fraud?
Just want to say that I work with and have worked with many stellar coders from India. I'd suggest not writing off over a billion people.
dkarp··on Cheap junk flooding Amazon has brand names like MOFFBUZW
I recently moved to the US from the UK. In the UK, we have Argos that sells a few versions of each product at different price points. If you pay more, you get better quality and you aren't sifting through hundreds of fake brands of similar products.

Target is definitely the closest we've found over here.

dkarp··on Deepest infrared image of universe
Prepare to have your mind blown: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expansion_of_the_universe

TLDR: expansion of the universe doesn't care about the speed of light and the universe is believed to have inflated very fast in its early moments

dkarp··on GTA GeoGuesser
Last I heard, the rumors are exactly that. They're working on GTA 6 and it may be set in Vice City again

Problem is you're normally still judged by what you deliver, so you can't just chill and wait for things to get done
dkarp··on How to walk underground from Liverpool Street to Farringdon
I spent a day in Sapporo once and was initially confused at where all the people were. Streets were almost devoid of life. Then I found out about these underground tunnels and it clicked, that’s where everyone was, walking underground.
dkarp··on How This Ends
Presumably you don't live in an urban area then?
dkarp··on Ask HN: Are there any rural tech communities?
I’m talking more about influx of tech workers in those places rather than how rural they are. I’m aware they’re both cities and not that I’m seeking
dkarp··on Ask HN: Are there any rural tech communities?
I'd like to continue my tech career from a rural area with 4+ acres to grow produce for my family and enjoy quiet and privacy
dkarp··on A Tesla vehicle using ‘Smart Summon’ appears to crash into a $3.5mm private jet
Even if the insurance refuses to pay, the tesla owner would still have been liable. You'd have to go after them directly.
dkarp··on Ask HN: Are there any rural tech communities?
The difficulty for me is that I've been to very rural areas, I've stayed in rural areas and I've had friends/family in rural areas. And I do mean actually rural areas away from towns and cities.

I've never lived there though and it is hard to get a feel for what would actually bother you until you've spent a significant amount of time there.

dkarp··on Ask HN: Are there any rural tech communities?
I appreciate your point about population decline as that isn't something I had considered at all.

Maybe rural doesn't capture what I'm looking for, but I'm not sure of a better word and it does capture the feeling. I would like at least 4 acres and some privacy at the very least. Then the question becomes what I'd have to give up to get that. It definitely means giving up living in a big city, but maybe it doesn't mean giving up a small city/town.

dkarp··on Ask HN: Are there any rural tech communities?
I do worry about this. It feel like I often hear complaints of an influx of tech workers leading to higher prices for locals, especially real estate. I have friends in Denver, CO and Bend, OR specifically who have made that complaint over the last couple years
