docflabby··on EU bans the destruction of unsold apparel, clothing, accessories and footwear
Most clothes are manufactured in countries with cheaper labor costs to cut costs - the reality is clothes are cheap to make in terms of raw materials- and dumping unwanted clothes will just destory the local economy
docflabby··on A train-sized tunnel is now carrying electricity under South London
London and the south east is the UK in economic terms. Its the only those 2 regions which are net contributor to taxes

it's not that simple - illegal and harmful content can include things like hate speech - worth a longer read... https://www.theregister.com/2025/01/14/online_safety_act/

If I ran a small forum in the UK I would shut it down - not worth risk of jail time for getting it wrong.

docflabby··on James Webb Space Telescope finds evidence for alternate theory of gravity
Dark matter is just made up bs if you replace "magic" for dark whenever its mentioned its the same difference - theres no tangable evidence it exists at all.
docflabby··on Ask HN: Degoogling in 2024

docflabby··on Ask HN: Degoogling in 2024
Thanks!
docflabby··on He blew the whistle on Amazon. He's still paying the price
Why would you think Jeff would care?
docflabby··on He blew the whistle on Amazon. He's still paying the price
In a world run by sociopaths - whistleblowing is a trap to catch the people who could if instead of reporting the issues, they organised together and then could stop you...

I've yet to see any whistleblowing case not end badly.

docflabby··on Refactoring has a price, not refactoring has a cost
The reviewing isn't problem it's mostly because you have to become that asshole that everyone hates - developers who produce bad code also are the worst at taking feedback...
docflabby··on We always end up with waterfall
I think problem is product managers are very common and probably unavoidable in most organisations.

Can't have product owners without actual ownership - without real equity in the product being developed do they really own anything?

docflabby··on Regular use of Vitamin D supplement is associated with fewer melanoma cases
People who avoid the sun more likely to take vitamin D supplements?
docflabby··on Threads users down by more than a half
The real question is which is dying quicker Facebook or Twitter?
docflabby··on Low Code Software Development Is a Lie
Last one don't even need macros https://www.excel-easy.com/examples/dependent-drop-down-list...

I guess my point is alot of people outside of software development the goto for low/no code is excel

docflabby··on Low Code Software Development Is a Lie
Find me a non code product that can do something excel can't
docflabby··on Ask Wirecutter: Can you recommend a not-smart TV for me?
If only a small size (up to 32ish inches) needed 4k monitor would probably surfice
docflabby··on Why are developers expected to estimate tasks at all?
Because the budget is not infinite - there is normally a limit of time or money and it will determine the decision making process.

This doesn't mean the project will finish on time or within budget it just enables that part of the decision making process.

docflabby··on I broke a wine glass with my voice (2018) [video]
It's not something you recover quickly from :(
docflabby··on Don't Use Stripe
In the UK at least try and get building work done or buy a new car with a credit card and see how far you get...

Credit cards work great for small transactions for both consumers and businesses, but risks get high for the business (espcially small businesses) for larger transactions.

docflabby··on Don't Use Stripe
The problem is the intermediaries often add no value or help facilitate the fraud or refuse to help get the money back.

I lost £150,000 to a fraudulent account the bank knew about https://www.theguardian.com/money/2022/dec/14/i-lost-150000-...

Bank transfer scammers steal £700,000 a day from UK victims https://www.theguardian.com/money/2021/may/28/bank-transfer-...

docflabby··on Don't Use Stripe
Most small business I've found don't accept credit/debit cards for large transactions and instead want direct (cash) bank transfers because they fear the money going missing or getting a chargeback. This has its only issues as its slow and not very customer friendly.

If only there was some kind of virtual cash that could be sent from one party to another almost instantly without an intermediary

docflabby··on Why adults still dream about school

docflabby··on Job interview questions engineers should ask, but don't

docflabby··on A group of open source Android apps without ads or unnecessary permissions
I made a free shopping list app its not open source as ive lost the source...I made this about 10 years ago. Play store basically shadow bans completely free apps from small developers without adverts as far as i can tell. This is the app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.flabbyfish...
docflabby··on Shaving is an example of how consumer products extract more money
This post sounds a bit like an ad but i havn't looked back from the phillips oneblade. Its cheap, can be used wet or dry and cost like £30 and its the first razor that actually manages to remove the hairs on my neck effectively, only have to replace the blades every 6 months...
docflabby··on Visa's marketing opt-out has been down for over a week. Is this a legal issue?
I can make the point more articulated.

Quite simply everytime one of these stories comes up big corp breaks the law...is anyone going to do anything about it...The answer is pretty much always no not even fines...

Even something where a CEO admits intentionally breaking the law not much has happened. No talk of jail time? https://www.ft.com/content/3fbc5918-ad04-4003-8e09-3df12d7dc...

I think maybe I'm jaded with 'it's illegal'. If the law is not enforced it doesn't matter.

docflabby··on Visa's marketing opt-out has been down for over a week. Is this a legal issue?
Nah cos big corps just do what they want with no penalties unless they piss off enough people that the politicans feel like they need to make a point.. ...we're well into gangster capitalism now
docflabby··on The magic of the Japanese convenience store sandwich
I dont think anyone in England eats supermarket sandwiches because they taste good.

They are normally the cheapest ediable option for a filling meal that's not too unhealthy that can be consumed in a 30min lunch break or at a desk...

docflabby··on Approved Cameras
They probably do better to put more work into writing a guide for approved writers.

So many (many) shows with great actors completely let down by terrible scripts....
