I don't think lack of technological progress is responsible for the sorry state of scientific publishing, and I certainly don't think anyone wants to publish in a high-impact journal because Springer/Elsevier's publishing model makes sense.

dodslaser··on LG to ban residential proxies from smart TV apps
Samsung is good, except:

- No Dolby Vision support, only HDR10+ - Issues with judder/micro stutter - History of nerfing TVs via OTA updates - HDMI ports randomly failing - Bad HDMI-CEC implementation - Selling completely different panel generations under the exact same model names.

Why on God's green earth would anyone set their desktop up to look like that? It looks like youre reading everything off of overhead transparencies.
dodslaser··on The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the Swedish Örebro party
Find yourself on that side of the argument often, do you?

On a more serious note: No, I don’t see Markus Allard or the Örebro party as a threat in isolation. The broader right-wing populist movement they are part of, on the other hand, is very concerning. The normalization of racism, vilification of independent journalism, widespread acceptance of "alternative facts," and nonchalant attitude towards the democratic processes within this movement are particularly worrying.

dodslaser··on The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the Swedish Örebro party
No, I'm saying he walks and quacks like a right-wing populist. In fact, you were the one who brought up Hitler. There are several others you could compare him to; It's always the same playbook.
dodslaser··on The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the Swedish Örebro party
I'm talking about the leader of the Örebro party.
dodslaser··on The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the Swedish Örebro party
Yeah, and their leader just happens to be a man disgruntled with the inefficiency and bureaucracy of democracy, mostly famous for his intense emotional political speeches, who blames most if not all of society's problems on his political opponents and/or ethnic minorities.
dodslaser··on The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the Swedish Örebro party
Maybe we could meet in the middle and call them a nationalist socialist workers party.

3d population density would be an interesting measure, though. It would provide a better feel for how cramped a populated volume actually is.

It would have to be the displacement volume, to account for cities with only a few really tall buildings, and also somehow adjusted for buildings with high ceilings.

dodslaser··on Show HN: Uruky (EU-based Kagi alternative) now has Image Search and URL Rewrites
Yes, and a lot of EU citizens/companies are actively in the process of migrating away from US based software/products to EU alternatives for, among others, this exact reason.
dodslaser··on The mysterious Hy3 LLM is topping OpenRouter Model Rankings by a large margin
Any bonus points for the color sre immediately subtracted because the "animate wheels" button leaves the wheels stationary and makes the sun rotate.
dodslaser··on Tvheadend: Self-Hosted IPTV Server
It's been a few years since i last tried, but I was pretty satisfied with TBS PCI-e tuners [1]. Good linux support, stable, and you can get them with multiple tuners to stream/record many channels at once.

dodslaser··on The mysterious black fungus from Chernobyl that may eat radiation
Just dry the fungus and burn it. The process is fairly analogous to photosynthesis in plants, so we've basically already been doing this since we learned to make fire, just with a different source of radiation.

Handling nitrogen is more dangerous than CO2 for the same reason it is more humane for the animals; you don’t notice you’re being asphyxiated. Not that it is impossible or even particularly difficult to handle nitrogen safely, but it would incur a cost (training, equipment, ...), and inevitably result in accidents when these costs are skimped on.

Unless legislation changes, it's simply better business to let the animals suffer.

Yeah, and while handling radium paint on a daily basis probably isn't the best, they ingested a lot more radium than you would from just being around it all day. Radium paint had been deemed non-toxic, and so the standard operating procedure for the factory workers was to "point" the tips of the brushes using their lips.
dodslaser··on AI note takers are flooding Zoom calls as workers opt to skip meetings
Personally I don't mind spending several hours solving a problem over "async communication" if that means I'm free to work on other stuff while the other party is formulating a response. Then I also get the benefit of having something in their writing to refer back to.

The kind of person who takes hours to explain something in written form are unlikely to explain it in 3 minutes in person. More likely, they set up a meeting where they waffle on about an issue, expecting the receiving end to distill some valuable information from their ramblings, and then inevitably end up complaining when the solution doesn't match their expectations (which of course were never formalized anywhere).

dodslaser··on Satellites keep breaking up in space. Insurance won't cover them
If you take the "works" part out of the equation they seem really eager though. They regularly take a single flying thing and turn it into many flying things.
dodslaser··on Python argparse has a limitation on argument groups that makes me sad
Yes it can. click.Context provides a get_parameter_source method that should help with that.
