dokument··on Summary of the Amazon DynamoDB Service Disruption in US-East-1 Region
There are circular dependencies within AWS, but also systems to account for this (especially for cold starting).

Also there really is no one AWS, each region is its own (Now more then ever before, where some systems weren't built to support this).

dokument··on Harnessing chaos in Cloudflare offices
Compromising a single seed source for randomness doesn't mean you have control over the output. That's the whole point to using multiple sources.
dokument··on Ask HN: Have you ever switched cloud?
Netflix is hosted on AWS to name just one such instance. I have heard that internally the customer names are obfuscated, including other Amazon services. Indeed it would be a death sentence to prioritize themselves.
dokument··on IRS to adopt Login.gov as user authentication tool
Issues with login.gov don't make me very confident.

Try putting in 2 lower security passwords but then backspace deleting them and you get.

zxcvbn.feedback.use_a_few_words_avoid_common_phraseszxcvbn.feedback.no_need_for_symbols_digits_or_uppercase_letters

visible on the screen. I get it isn't a technical issue but still, doesn't give me confidence

dokument··on SHA-1 collisions now cost $45k [pdf]
I understand not wanting to use SHA-1 now for security reasons, but is it still an OK practice to use it as a general hashing function for a uuid/data checksum?
dokument··on Space Plane: Mysterious US military aircraft launches
Didnt' China try to do this a few years back but was shutdown for some reason? Also, this would double as a great military weapon so I am sure that is being assessed as well.

dokument··on Nest Cam status lights can no longer be turned off for privacy
"The downside is that Google owns you."

I think it is more of a question of who/what the actual product is.

dokument··on Is Ham Radio a Hobby, a Utility or Both? A Battle over Spectrum Heats Up
You can look at any major natural disaster and find good examples.
dokument··on Ask HN: What do you do with your Raspberry Pi?
- Hosting personal website from my DMZ at home.

- SDR and packet radio (Direwolf) projects

- Kodi

- rpi zeroW with usb serial for connecting back to my house from work/travel.

I had more projects, but I've been able to replace them all with ESP8266's. Rpi is overkill to do simple things like toggle a gpio pin or take temperature readings. Use it if you have it, but it's nice freeing up extra rpi's with a $2 ESP.

dokument··on Practical Linux Hardening Guide
Additionally having a non-standard port does help defend against 0day exploits before patches are available or before you are able to disable the port.
dokument··on Show HN: A new protocol for packet radio including ECDSA and compression
Another reason. If encryption was allowed then you would have a lot of commercial use on public bands but you couldn't enforce it, etc. It would ruin the public bands for everyone.
dokument··on Reliable, Secure and Universal Backup for U2F Token
So basically U2F clones. It would be neat to have some sort of CA between U2F devices, device A could sign device B and be put away, and device B could store the signing and share that with sites. This would allow device A to revoke device B completely, but would require a change of u2f support.

I understand the counter piece, but let's say someone steals your primary U2F, can't they just increment the counter to 1000002 and it would keep working even if you have used your backup token?

dokument··on Dropbear SSH, a lightweight alternative to OpenSSH
"raid" 1/0 and 10 are stable, others are not. Theoretically btrfs can protect against bit-rot where other fs's typically don't.
dokument··on U.S. Attorney Moves to Dismiss Murder-For-Hire Charges Against Ross Ulbricht
For the sake of a debate, why wouldn't you? (just sticking to drug kingpin and not including the murder for hire stuff...)
dokument··on Features of a successful therapeutic fast of 382 days' duration (1973)
You can't live off of just fat.

Also, you are a collection of organisms that work together to keep "you" alive. Punishing your gut bacteria/etc just because you can is not healthy.

dokument··on Parallel tasks in Python: concurrent.futures
Would this allow separate GC'ng for each task?
dokument··on Grammarly shared its tokens with all websites
> I personally stay far away from password managers

I am curious how you manage your passwords.

dokument··on Saildrone: autonomous sailing craft with instruments for collecting data
I've always wanted to make an open source autonomous watercraft to collect data. I also think some open source uplink buoys would be sweet. Then your craft could offload lots of data to them (which would be pushed to the internet) instead of paying for satellite time or trying to coordinate picking up your craft manually.
dokument··on Facebook open-sources Detectron
Amazon will have a new captcha asking how many boxes of cheeze-itz this person is holding on their way out of a store.
dokument··on NOAA kicks off 2018 with massive supercomputer upgrade
Didn't Dell acquire EMC?
dokument··on How to break a Captcha system in 15 minutes with Machine Learning
| Do you consider that a CAPTCHA? Yes:"Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart"

But funny enough, I believe that data is used to help with machine learning to identify the objects, so we are CAPTCHA'ng ourselves into harder and harder CAPTCHA's.

The "I am not a robot" types are interesting because they don't just test you, they monitor your behavior. "If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck."

dokument··on Start Tracking Satellites with This Low-Cost Azimuth-Elevation Positioner
I always thought linear actuators would be cheaper, stronger, and more reliable than this and the satnogs versions of satellite tracking.
dokument··on Tesla Semi Truck Unveiling
Battery packs could be swapped out and charged out of the vehicle. This would make a lot of sense.
dokument··on Please Stop Writing Secure Messaging Tools (2015)
Bandwidth and local storage considerations are missing from this. All of those features are great, but if my decentralized application uses all of my available bandwidth and disk space, then it is not very great.

This is very relevant because decentralized means that all that centralized storage and bandwidth needs to split up and amplified to account for offline users.

dokument··on Disqus comments adding third-party ad-tracking
I modified my blog recently to require users to click a button before disqus is even loaded on the page. I think it gives the best of both worlds.
