dolphenstein··on uBlock Origin is giving up the fight to keep ads off Facebook
There is a large cohort of people who will complain about ads but also don't want to pay. My little microSaaS is monetised with ads but I offer option to pay if you don't like the ads. Still get plenty of complaints about the ads.
dolphenstein··on UPI: Anatomy of a Payment Transaction
After adding UPI as a payment option to my little microSaaS, I'm finally starting to see sales in India. Was like trying to extract hen's teeth to get an Indian to sign up before that.
dolphenstein··on The Boeing 747 begins its final descent
I bet if you pay the equivalent 60s/70s dollars to fly today you'll get much better service than back then! Modern first class cabins are a class above what was available back then.
dolphenstein··on Anthropic officially bans using subscription auth for third party use
OpenRouter falls in the acceptable use category. They targeting users that are misusing their Claude OAuth token on non-Anthropic products.
dolphenstein··on Launch HN: Channel3 (YC S25) – A database of every product on the internet
$7 per 1000 searches seems steep. Don't think I will sign up to something where I have no idea if I'll make money, considering I'll also be sharing the commission with you.
dolphenstein··on Cursor 1.0
The Pro account is only $20/month and works with Claude Code.
dolphenstein··on My 10 Year Side Project Story
Yeah, it's all client side. Which is why I was able to just leave and forget about it for so long. Was hosted on an S3 bucket. There's tons of libraries out there that does client side compression/decompression. Just search through github! :-)
dolphenstein··on My 10 Year Side Project Story

dolphenstein··on My 10 Year Side Project Story
Can relate. I built a little web utility back in 2009. Did practically nothing with it (occasional updates every 2/3 years) and it slowly accumulated inbound links and google ranking. Then finally in 2019 I decided to put a bit more effort into it. Now I make my living from it! :-)
dolphenstein··on My Experience at Apple
You're thinking of Agilent. Also Accenture didn't change their name due to Enron. It happened before the scandal (so quite lucky for them!) Arthur Andersen and Andersen Consulting were involved in a legal tussle which required them to change their name... https://www.nytimes.com/2000/08/08/business/worldbusiness/IH...
dolphenstein··on Vue 3 Beta
I like that I can embed a bit of vue code into an existing web page. Bit like old school javascript. AngularJS 1.x was like that too and the inspiration for Vue. React/Angular require a whole build process with NPM/webpack etc etc to create a SPA.
dolphenstein··on Show HN: Proximity Beacons with programmable NFC
Theres an interesting product over at kickstarter. Seems to be getting a quite a bit of traction. Beacon with a whole bunch of different sensors. All open source! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/463050344/ruuvitag-open...
dolphenstein··on South Korea to raise $500B for unification
Thats a dumb argument. Boeing still makes 747s, which is the same age.
dolphenstein··on Pawnmail: a free email host for custom domains
You're comparing apples with tuna
dolphenstein··on The Story Behind the Worst Movie on IMDb
After you've watched The Room, read "The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside the Room, the Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made". It is a fascinating tale! (And is being turned into a movie of it's own starring James Franco)
dolphenstein··on Avocode – preview and inspect PSD without Photoshop
Just the sort of tool I'm after! Been using Gimp to open PSDs but it's quite finicky and error prone. I can't justify myself a Photoshop license just for inspection purposes.
dolphenstein··on NetBeans IDE 8.0
Netbeans 8 is great for HTML5/JS work as well. Been using the beta version for AngularJS development the past 2 months.
dolphenstein··on Show HN: A dead simple static site generator – just two template tags
Awesome! Just what I needed this morning.
dolphenstein··on Free static page hosting on Google App Engine in minutes
Need to create page rules if you want to cache HTML pages.

Also, cloudflare does support clearing of individual files. There is an API for it. Pretty sure their web client does too.

dolphenstein··on Ask HN: How do you send money to friends?
Direct deposit into account when both of us are in Australia. Requires bank account number of recipient. Doesn't incur fees like paypal does.
dolphenstein··on Coming to an office near you
Sounds like communism (the ideal of it)
dolphenstein··on Tcl the misunderstood (2006)
Tcl might've been elegant but StoryServer most certainly wasn't. Http variables automatically injected into the code was a particularly fun security risk. Then they provided helpful (to hackers) error messages that could be googled. Still came up with a result all these years later! :-) http://www.google.com/#q=intitle%3A"StoryServer+Error"
dolphenstein··on Sold just got acquired by Dropbox and closed their company
I had the same feeling when reading this post. It's one thing to spin a positive when acquired for the product and not the people.

When you're about to shutdown a service, this kind of self-congratulation is more like a middle finger to the users. A humbly apologetic post would've been a better goodwill gesture. High five each other in private.

dolphenstein··on Nokia Becomes The Fourth Largest Smartphone Brand in USA in Q3 2013
It's only Nokia by name going forward. The name will likely be killed off once MS completes it's assimilation in to the collective.
dolphenstein··on Facebook has just invited me to interview and now I’m pissed off
This post comes off kind of douchey. Sympathies evaporated once you started mentioning slavery. Factory workers in South East Asia might have a slightly different opinion on what constitutes slavery.

You could've had some fun with the challenge. E.g. Write a piece of code that draws a massive middle finger on the screen. That would've been a cooler response!

Here's how I responded to a small company that was trying to make me jump through (unnecessary) hoops: http://www.andrewdyster.com/how-to-fill-out-selection-criter...

(These guys were a small 3-4 man operation, not a mega corp. My way of telling them to stop acting like dicks.)

dolphenstein··on Show HN: Rate My App - The Best Way for Developers to Stay in Shape
Seconded. This is very confusing. Is it a way to collect feedback on my apps, some kind of life hack fitness app or something to do with technical interviews?
dolphenstein··on Firepoker.io - Planning Poker built with AngularJS and Firebase
I've built a basic poker tracker with AngularJS/FileReader API called PokerStoker.com. Was just about expecting to see the same! :-) At the moment its sitting on HD waiting for me to polish it off. If theres any casual poker players out there that are looking for a simple tracker, msg me. I'll send you the beta link.
dolphenstein··on Formula 1′s Leading Team Has a Big Secret
That statement in the article is quite disingenuous. 30 seconds is a comfortable win but not something to get excited about. The front runners routinely lap the poorer teams, so it's hardly "fractions of a second".
dolphenstein··on Autopsy of a failed side project
Aah, ok. Seems stupid to sue as the site promotes the songs (via iTunes, etc...) but the music industry aren't exactly known for rational decision making.
dolphenstein··on Autopsy of a failed side project
Has the site been put down? Why didn't you keep it as a fun little side project? I don't understand why the goal has to always be a $17 million exit. I've built things like facetache.com and openingthemes.tv cause I thought they were fun, not for some massive financial windfall.
