donkey_brains··on Living beyond the limits of survival: wood ants trapped in a gigantic pitfall (2016)
I also found this part hilarious. It’s not even a needle in a haystack, more like one specific needle in a…big pile of needles, I guess. Except the needles are microscopic, fragile and fragmentary.

They mentioned that a queen or brood ant might fall into the bunker occasionally but the low temperatures would prevent breeding in that case.

It’s definitely a metaphor for something, but I don’t know what.

donkey_brains··on The Onion Voting Simulator 3D on Steam
I’ve tried and tried but I just cannot get to the gym level. Suspect the game is unbeatable. Well, at least in one sense of the word.
donkey_brains··on Amazon’s “digital pacifier” for toddlers
> This is no different to our parents generation that used to tell us to stop watching TV or get off the games console (like a Gameboy).

Yeah, except for the part where it’s engineered to be as addictive as physiologically possible, it’s exactly the same!

I’m with you 100% on obsessively blocking ads. I cringe whenever I accidentally see one in someone else’s house. They’re just so transparently playing on our insecurities…keep that particular mind virus away from me. I buy as little as possible and I’m quite content with it, thank you very much.
donkey_brains··on New York bans horse-drawn carriages after 160 years
Everyone is overlooking the fundamental fact that _horses aren't real_. They don't exist and never have. This is all just horsewashing by Big Horse to entice people to bet on underground horse fights and pay for horse yoga classes. Wake up, sheeple!
donkey_brains··on Wolves enter Finnish villages after Google clears 1300 acres for AI data centers
Maybe now people will see that decrying the environmental impacts of data centers isn't just "crying wolf"!

It looks like this solution really fit the bill.

Seriously though, awesome article and I hope we get to see some videos of the bird using his new beak at some point. I love how all these experts came together to fix the beak.

donkey_brains··on Who Is Planting Backdoors in Ledger Crypto Wallets?
They were almost certainly not doing the OCR on the device. Such a CPU would be too power-hungry and the process would still be too error-prone given the limited compute. They would just send the raw data to the C2, which could send it to an emulator, snapshot the output and send it to an LLM.

Congratulations, you’ve built the Torment Nexus from the classic sci-fi story, “Don’t Build The Torment Nexus”.
donkey_brains··on Anthropic AI model submits false tip on unsolved Philly murder, police say
“NBC10 reached out to Anthropic for comment.”

Wonder what kind of response they’ll get? Maybe something along the lines of…

“You’re right. We shouldn’t have allowed our chatbot to interact with law enforcement websites. That was wrong and —full disclosure— we should pay attention to what our chatbots are doing. That’s on us. On the other hand, experiences like this are what help train our chatbots to make less misleading false tips over time. That’s the silver lining.”

Woah man, don't advocate that people synthetically drink and fly! There may be non-wirehead kids in here who don't need that kind of influence.

donkey_brains··on Autism is genetic – and why this information matters now
Of all the misguided, abusive studies. It beggars belief that a board somehow approved this.

What happened here is simple: the autistic kids got better at masking in order to placate the researchers who were shoving poop up their butts. In the hope of making it stop.

donkey_brains··on Show HN: I made a flight simulator, except you're just a passenger
It's missing a few elements for realism: - Passengers on either side of you taking both your armrests - Continually crying baby seated just in front of you - Person behind you coughing without covering mouth every 2 minutes - Kids fighting for control of a tablet across the aisle from you - Tiny cans of Coke
