dontblink··on Anthropic Joins the Blender Development Fund as Corporate Patron
I can imagine they would be interested in creating features to generate 3d models.

dontblink··on AMD Unveils AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT Graphics Card
Every sapphire (3) I have had has failed. I luckily got one rmaed but that starting freezing my computer after a year.

Switched to XFX Merc 319 6950xt. I hope this serves me better.

dontblink··on YouTube punishes ad-blocker users with slower videos on non-Chrome browsers
Technically you are correct. In practice this is difficult to implement though. If you disagree, please provide a PoC?
dontblink··on YouTube punishes ad-blocker users with slower videos on non-Chrome browsers
Sometimes the simplest explanation is the most probable and there is no wide spread conspiracy.

Youtube does experiments based on user-agents. I think this is well known and if not, a former Googler just let you know.

In any case, for those who are complaining, it's their website. Either pay or stop using it?

dontblink··on Google paid $8B to make its apps default on Samsung phones
I think it's in part that they don't want to seem to compete with Samsung so they have to define themselves as mid tier.
dontblink··on GM's Cruise alleged to rely on human operators to achieve "autonomous" driving
So Waymo/Google winning here in your opinion?
dontblink··on A mansion hidden directly under the Bay Bridge
Could be one about WW2 actually!
dontblink··on Google Authenticator now supports Google Account synchronization
Just an FYI here: Google's community support forums aren't well named as their intended purpose is for users to answer other user's questions. For the community to support each other.

For actual support you need a paid account to reach out to.

You could argue that it's badly named and should just be called Google's community forum instead, which is what it really is.

dontblink··on Amazon to lay off 9,000 more workers after earlier cuts
Google famously underpays as it leverages it's name. Startups can't really compete on total compensation because so much is tied to equity which can be made liquid in the case of big tech. At the same time, startups don't want to give away their equity and are fairly conservative about it. I don't see this changing. The current situation will resolve itself in 1-2 yrs and we will be back again.
dontblink··on Microsoft is now injecting full-size ads on Chrome website
It's been forked. I'm no lawyer, but I think they could.
dontblink··on Google to reduce workforce by 12k
Is it though? He hasn't really moved the needle for Google at all other than capitalizing on growth laid out by his predecessors. Satya is far more admired for his accomplishments comparitivly.
dontblink··on Latest Tech Layoff Trends in Three Charts
No. Seems like the article is making assumptions.
dontblink··on Apple blocks Coinbase Wallet
I don't understand why the disgruntled companies don't simply band together and remove their apps from Apple until Apple complies? Apple is as reliant on their third party apps for their ecosystems as much as the inverse.
dontblink··on Meta stock price drops more than 20%
Have you ever tried virtual desktops? It was a huge benefit for me.
dontblink··on Elon Musk moves ahead with Twitter deal in 13D filing
I feel the same. Now Twitter will potentially be manipulated by him. He will have a lot more sway over public opinion.
dontblink··on How long do software engineers stay at a job? (2021)
Switching every two years is a red flag for employers and is called out during hiring in many companies.

Every 3-4 years seems to indicate a better uptick in interest / offers in my experience. Otherwise the concern from many Hiring Managers is: I'm going to invest my time and effort (~6 mos) in training, and that will be lost very quickly.

In my view a promotion is every 3-4 years as well (although it can be faster) at the FAANG companies. If someone is able to get a promo, that is the best time to start looking. It establishes that the individual is on an upwards trajectory so it makes it easier to hire them and convince others if the company is committee based on hiring decisions.

dontblink··on Sundar Pichai hopes to make Google more efficient, hints at potential cuts
Trimming the fat can be used to also be net zero in employment loss. E.g. cutting projects that are not going to make money and reinvest the effort from Engineers into extending more impactful (profitable?) products.
dontblink··on 'Too many employees, but few work': Pichai, Zuckerberg sound the alarm
This doesn't work in a company of large size. There is a reason it's called 120% rule at Google.
dontblink··on FCC: TikTok is unacceptable security risk and should be removed from app stores
Well, allies can ask friendly governments for information on their own citizens without violating and of their own privacy laws. So it can be useful as a circumvention tool for them.
dontblink··on Federal Reserve raises rates by 0.75%
It equalizes them. And products on AliExpress are cheaper. But that, of course, depends on the US relationship with China which doesn't seem to be getting friendlier.
dontblink··on Google, Meta, others will have to explain algorithms under new EU legislation
Regarding the rules surrounding fake information, I wonder why the be EU hasn't taken a similar stance against Fox News equivalencies?
dontblink··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
Bezos has Washington Post as his mouthpiece. Murdoch has Fox News. Musk doesn't really need more money. I don't think this is just pump and dump.

Is it possible Musk is looking to buy a method to influence a populace for his own ends? I.E. is this a method for him to influence a population to gain power and sway over elections, organizations, etc?

dontblink··on Ask HN: Why is Firefox losing marketshare and how would you save it?
But there is no forcible capture of an audience. Users can download and use a browser pretty easily.

Even in the Denuvo case, there is still pirate activity on games that employ it (albeit no 0 days).

dontblink··on Ask HN: Why is Firefox losing marketshare and how would you save it?
This is an interesting argument. But this is effectively stating that Google has to be a good steward. If that is the case, then there really isn't much of a problem afaict (i.e. majority is happy).

If Google is treating devs and users well, there is no reason to switch. It's when they falter on one, migrations can and will occur (given past history as experience).

dontblink··on Ask HN: Why is Firefox losing marketshare and how would you save it?
But why is that a worry? This happened before when IE6 dominated. Firefox was liberation. It can be that again and has set precedent.
dontblink··on Silicon Valley’s tech monopoly is over. Is the future in Austin, Texas?
Almost always the answer to a question in a headline is No (Betteridge's law of headlines). I think there is a lot of wishful thinking about breaking SV's dominance. Reasons being that it is such a HCOL area and how great would it be to live elsewhere! Truth be told, high tech salaries are not as high in other regions compared to the COL (in the general sense). SV has at least two top engineering schools (UCB and Stanford), and many people are unwilling to give up the easy opportunity to switch jobs and _not_ move.

There is also this gravity effect of SV. People move to SV to get a tech job, so thats where the majority of them are. But from talking to folks, there is a real lack of available talent, so companies are forced to look elsewhere. From my own experience, there are not a huge number of available candidates in other areas either.

dontblink··on Court rejects $1.2B EU antitrust fine against Intel
You are using Safari (actually webkit) with a Chrome UI.
dontblink··on Lawsuit filed alleging Google is paying Apple to stay out of the search business
I'd imagine at some point depriving sites of revenue will lead to adversarial outcomes where many if not all will simply refuse to load. So if ad blockers become mainstream it will be interesting change to the web.
