doque··on Netlify just sent me a $104k bill for a simple static site
That method you're mentioning is provided by setting up a webhook that pauses a project, which can be fully automated.

doque··on Server-Side Only React with Next
Which is the reasonable way to do it. However, uncacheable things might remain.
doque··on Server-Side Only React with Next
Because it could be personalized content that differs for each request/user.
doque··on Ask HN: Who is hiring right now?
joyn.de | Full Time | ONSITE/REMOTE (London, UK and Munich, GER)

We're building a streaming & Live-TV platform for the European market in order to connect content providers with users across all of Europe. We build apps for all web & mobile platforms including TVs.

Our engineering department is hiring for multiple teams: React, Video Streaming, Player, Ads, GraphQL, Android, SRE and Data Science. You will have plenty of opportunity to get to know new teams and technologies, as we value end-to-end ownership of features and T-shaped profiles. Our stack includes Typescript, React, NextJS, Kotlin, Python, Java and Scala (and more!) all running on AWS.

We have two locations - Munich is our headquarter but we’re ramping up our London office as well. We welcome junior applicants, depending on the role. Some roles are considering remote candidates, best to ask during your application.

If interested, check out our jobs page & open positions (https://jobs.lever.co/joyn) or write directly to remote.jobs@joyn.de.

doque··on Performant Front-End Architecture
Great looking app, giving it a try now.
doque··on LastPass stores passwords so securely, not even its users can access them
So in response to this story I decided to delete my (premium) account with them. After confirming multiple times (good thing), I was shown this error: https://i.imgur.com/4dpn6d5.png

How does error handling like this even make it to production?

I got an email as well confirming my account deletion and I can no longer log in.

But all in all this clearly does increase my trust in Lastpass's security competence.

doque··on The cost of parsing JSON
An interesting library I've found that tackles this issue is yieldable-json: https://developer.ibm.com/node/2017/11/13/yieldable-json-asy...
doque··on Public Chat Web Application Source Code on GitHub
Probably XSS: https://github.com/BisratYalew/Real-Time-Public-Chat/blob/ma...
doque··on Apple's New Map
I just checked the Arial iamgery of my home and the data appears to be more than 6 years old.
doque··on Apple's New Map
I wonder how this happens. If Apple has the capacity to detect grass strips between roads, how do they misplace an entire part of town (into the ocean, no less). Isn't there some sort of process in place to detect false positives?
doque··on The Effectiveness of Publicly Shaming Bad Security
Not password checks, but rather "does my email appear on haveibeenpwnd.com".
doque··on An ode to Apple’s awful MacBook keyboard
I got the first model with the new butterfly keyboard and the touchbar in April 2017 and I still hate it. I appreciate the idea of adding a touchbar for regular users. After all, it might be nicer for them to just press "Next Song" when using Spotify than fiddling around with Fn+F*. But for power users/developers, why do the most powerful MBP models come with these useless gimmicks? I'm using Dongles on 3/4 of the USB-C ports right now and that's not going to change anytime soon.

I wish Apple listened to developer's voices a bit more. To me, it's not a matter of price, either. I'd gladly pay more for a MBP with more/different ports and without a touchbar than I would for this model.

doque··on REST is the new SOAP
I agree. There are plenty of freedoms built into the REST way that enable you to create more or less detailed responses.

"I don’t care. Trees are recognized by their own fruits.
What took me a few hours of coding and worked very robustly, with simple RPC, now takes weeks..."
Weeks? For a REST API? No, I don't think so. REST gives you the tools to be pragmatic and quick, so use them.
doque··on How to optimize React applications that use Redux
It's one of the essentials principles of redux [1] that reducers must be pure functions without side effects.

If you violate that principle, then yes, your assumptions break. That's why you should keep it in mind. You can't really blame the framework if you purposely go against its basic rules.

doque··on What should go into JSX 2.0?
How about { data && <Inner person={ data.person }/> } ?
doque··on Dropbox Project Infinite
I'm guessing this will only be available for Business subscriptions?
doque··on NPM and Left-Pad: Have We Forgotten How to Program?
Webpack 2 will support this: http://www.2ality.com/2015/12/webpack-tree-shaking.html
doque··on Ask HN: How often do you commit / push in Git?
I commit everything that I want to be able to recover/share. If it's necessary to share (e.g. open a pull request), or if I want to have a distributed backup of my work, I'll push.
doque··on React v0.14
Can you explain 3.?
doque··on Germany's Wi-Fi Shortage Set to Ease as Merkel Backs New Bill
Clearly you've not used a German cell phone plan, nor have experienced the LTE coverage across Germany.
doque··on iLoo

The i-Loo featured an internet-enabled monitor on the cubicle wall and a special
printer that would allow users to print information
on a standard toilet paper roll.
I would have loved to see that product pitch.
doque··on EU Telecoms deal: Mobile roaming charges ban in 2017
Relevant Part:

Roaming will be banned in 2017, and from April 30, 2016, surcharges for
roaming will be capped at a maximum of €0.05 per minute for calls, €0.02 for
SMSs and €0.05 per megabyte for data.
doque··on Show HN: Front-end framework optimized for internal apps
The 'select all' checkbox on http://getflakes.com/preview/tables.html has no effect my Chrome.
doque··on How secure is TextSecure?
I've had a lot of issues with MSS not being received.
doque··on Facebook's Top Open Data Problems
3. Hive is Facebook's data warehouse, with 300 petabytes of data in 800,000 tables. Facebook generates 4 new petabyes of data and runs 600,000 queries and 1 million map-reduce jobs per day.

So 4 PB per day, but only 300 PB total?

doque··on Firebug 2.0
Firebug is still the best tool set on any browser. I still recall the times where you had to debug IE using alert() statements without any sort of debugger.
doque··on Show HN: Brix for Bootstrap
I can't login with my credentials after confirming my email (confirmation hash: 160caba46334a76427bbfc0d127542f8), so that's kind of a show stopper.
