doubled112··on Image generation has come a long way since August 2022
Doesn’t that depend where you want to go?
doubled112··on Software may be getting worse, but it used to be horrible
I’ve seen them from AMD and Nvidia drivers.

Antivirus on my work Windows laptop has caused countless BSODs. VPN clients are often junk.

I had a KVM that could occasionally trigger one.

Windows itself seems to be pretty BSOD free. It is almost always something installed after or hardware.

doubled112··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2025/06/fbi-warning-iot-device...

That’s probably a decent starting point, but a little older. I am not sure if the situation has changed any in 2026.

doubled112··on IBM CEO says open weight models are now good and cheap on-prem
> It will be very nice when AI gets to the emulator stage.

Do you think we'll be longing for the nostalgia hit of LLM models from 2025 in 2050?

Maybe we will collectively miss being completely right and inappropriate em—dashes.

That's what comes after the verification can.
doubled112··on MPs moving to restrict gambling ads in Canada
> we don't allow gambling in every convenience store in the country

In Ontario we do allow gambling in every convenience store in the province.

There are scratch tickets right there on the counter. There's the OLG machine for printing and checking lottery tickets and sports betting.

It has been this way for as long as I can remember, but it's never been in your face like the last few years.

Maybe we'll start repurposing the washrooms and stock rooms for poker tournaments soon.

doubled112··on Railway Security Disclosure
What a brave new concept!

Sometimes I do miss owning the hardware to run a thing.

What I don't miss was having all of those appliances run a different base distro of Linux, each with varying levels of update support, while the security team keeps reading security scans to me.

Burning the house down in The Sims was one of my childhood guilty pleasures.

doubled112··on Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier
It wouldn't need to drop grenades. It could pick you up, fly high enough, and drop you to your death. Never runs out of ammo, just batteries.

This is pretty horrifying. Bonus points if you hit somebody on the way down?

doubled112··on Laptop Based on 6502 CPU
That's a CompactFlash card. You often see them used in places where an IDE drive would have been.
doubled112··on MapQuest will now show you where Flock cameras are in your neighborhood
Except Canadians who noticed that it was Lake America?

Oops, sorry, didn’t notice you were in Canada eh?

Likely story. No way Google could tell Canada and the US apart.

doubled112··on What I self-host
A filesystem snapshot shouldn’t be much different than pulling the plug and powering it back on.

Does a DB fall apart every time that happens? It does happen, but I might argue it shouldn’t happen, especially in simple configurations.

I do have an automatic daily dump in case of emergencies.

doubled112··on I Love Software Rendering
Similarly, I really did prefer Playstation graphics to N64 graphics.
doubled112··on What I self-host
I prefer a separate DB instance for each app. Each app is on a separate ZFS filesystem so I can snapshot/backup the app data and DB together as one.

A possible restore only affects that app. Plus I can guarantee the files and DB were snapshotted at the same moment this way.

It may just be a way for me to avoid managing the DB.

doubled112··on Delta’s Biscoff cookies were supposed to be temporary
When I told my doctor about my oldest having a reaction to a chocolate bar with peanuts, one of his first questions was "did he react before he knew it had peanuts?"

He's pretty anxious about food in general, so it actually made a lot of sense.

doubled112··on Microsoft says Windows 11 is now 'more responsive' and runs better on 8GB of RAM
Why does the desktop right click menu take over 1 second to open?

My only Windows machine has a Core Ultra 7 in it, and 32GB of DDR5 RAM. It should be powerful enough to render a menu instantly, I thought.

Or better yet, who at Microsoft decided this performance was adequate? Does nobody care anymore? Or just not the right people?

doubled112··on Do dentists know what they're doing?
I had all four wisdom teeth removed without anything more than acetaminophen and ibuprofen.

Are narcotics normally required to handle that?

I also had my gallbladder out via laparoscopic surgery with the same as pain relief. It's possible we just don't feel pain the same.

doubled112··on Banks are now trying to offload the AI data center debt they just underwrote
Aren't they PCIe like everything else or am I missing something? I know they have some fast interconnects. If not, is an adapter to PCIe possible?

Cooling is usually what kills you with server gear at home. I don't have a cold aisle, or a case that flows that much air. Can I water cool it enough?

No video outputs would probably be my biggest annoyance. It should be fine at headlessly rendering games for streaming though, as well as AI.

If there's a will, there's usually a way.

doubled112··on Hackers activate automatic defrosting in supermarket fridges across Europe
Buying a car is the easy part.

In my experience, new cars have new car problems, but old cars have old car problems.

There’s no clear winner in every metric, just trade offs.

doubled112··on IRCv3
Can you whip a llama’s ass with it?
doubled112··on Why people don't want to have children any more
Trucks were a great loophole because you were allowed to have more people than seatbelts as long as every seatbelt was in use. At least that was my understanding of the law.

For me it was sitting on a milk crate in the back of a van. I liked watching the road pass underneath us through the rust holes.

Car seat? No.

Seat belt? No.

Seat? No, not even one of those.

doubled112··on Why people don't want to have children any more
I'd consider car seat laws to be an indicator for improvements to safety expectations. They are are a lot higher now.

You didn't have an 11 seater back in the day. You just put people wherever they fit and hoped nobody noticed. It was "fine" at one point. You'd be raked over the coals for it now.

doubled112··on Why people don't want to have children any more

doubled112··on Classic PC demoscene productions running natively in the browser
The reverse Midas touch.
doubled112··on The era of software quality, or the era of ostriches?
The apostrophe in my last name taught me a lot about how bad the average web form is at names early on.

I've also had registered domains turn the box red with "Please enter a valid email address" as if it needed to end in .(com|org|edu|gov)

doubled112··on So you think you could be an electrician?
In trades, those projects have obvious beginnings, ends, and results. The driveway is poured. You’re often not expected to maintain that driveway either.

A lot of tech is basically a treadmill. You’re never finished. It is no wonder people burn out mentally.

Something like cybersecurity? Great, we made it through today, tomorrow will be worse. Repeat until something bad happens.

My knees and back might last longer though.

doubled112··on Suits Are Better Tech Than Modern Clothes
Women’s clothing has always confused me.

I was at a wedding a couple of weeks ago and the bride’s dress had pockets. It may have been the least important time in her life to have them, but it had them.

doubled112··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?

doubled112··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
These days I run a Matrix home server with bridges to Slack and WhatsApp so I can use fewer chat clients.

I do wish the Matrix client situation was less messy.
