dpcx··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
> Lastly, the US has got to start eating seasonally.

Fair. But the almonds and alfalfa would like a word, especially since the alfalfa is shipped around the world for others to consume in some way.

So while it's definitely agriculture as a serious source, it's not just the US as the driver of that source.

dpcx··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
I think the post was missing a </sarcasm> flag.
dpcx··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
I take it you didn't read all of this, considering they tried to impersonate the moderators so they wouldn't get caught, set up heartbeats to find out how long they'd live, and used tor/AWS/DO to hide what was being done.

All of that sounds like more than a nothingburger, and much more like a system that is actively trying to conceal what its doing.

dpcx··on Why the Ocean Cleanup hasn't solved the plastic pollution crisis
They're still doing ocean cleanup, too. Getting the fishing equipment out of the water is a huge improvement.
dpcx··on The Zilog Z80 has turned 50
This is the CPU that I first learned to code on, first in TI Basic (TI-8[1356] ftw) and then Z80 assembler. Crazy to think that the CPU was "old" when I started, and it's still doing good work in those calculators even 20+ years later.
dpcx··on Ask HN: Any AWS billing issues known? Amazon forecast of 3 billion dollars
My immediate thought was that someone managed to get an access key, stuffed a ton of data in there, and then was doing a ridiculous amount of egress. That was the only way I could conceivably coming up with anywhere near that much cost.
dpcx··on AWS: Inaccurate Estimated Billing Data – $1.7 billion
My estimate was over 2T. Talk about waking up quickly...
dpcx··on Moleskine's AI Lord of the Rings collection can only mock
Thinking that an AI generated image is somehow more efficient to make than a high res photo followed by a print is a bit odd to me.
dpcx··on GitHub Stacked PRs
Their manager who suggested that everything be a microservice, but everything depends on each other.
dpcx··on How Pizza Tycoon simulated traffic on a 25 MHz CPU
My high school girlfriend and I played this game all the time; trying to build the pizzas to get the best score was always super frustrating. It always felt like I could be a single pixel off and get a really low score, but I loved building my "empire"
dpcx··on Good software knows when to stop
I notice at this time there are no comments about systemd. I figured there would be at least one comment about it and "it does not try to do everything".
dpcx··on Figure 03, our 3rd generation humanoid robot
Maybe it's just me, but everything about this announcement feels very I, Robot... and not in a good way.

> allowing the entire fleet to upload terabytes of data for continuous learning and improvement

Ugh.

Edit: Yes, I meant I, Robot the film. U.S. Robotics and the like.

dpcx··on The RSS feed reader landscape
Unless I misunderstand, it also misses that Newsblur is open source and can be self hosted https://github.com/samuelclay/NewsBlur
dpcx··on Immich mobile app sync V2
This will be great. I only noticed two issues with the mobile app, and one of them had to do with performance - it would get "stuck" uploading an image to the server, and no amount of waiting would let it complete. So I'd have to restart the app, and it would always start over and check every image that was in the library before uploading would begin again.

The second issue is still related to timestamps from iCloud photos. The date that's on the photo in iCloud is not respected when uploading to Immich, meaning photos tagged from 40-90 years ago show up as being taken today.

dpcx··on Immich – High performance self-hosted photo and video management
The only problem I've had with it so far is that the date on photos coming from icloud is when they were uploaded, not the date that the photo was created or even the date that I've marked the photo as being taken. Makes seeing photos from 90 years ago kind of strange.
dpcx··on Immich – High performance self-hosted photo and video management
macOS on arm, you can download the ios app and install it. That's what I did to import my wife's photos.
dpcx··on Updates to Consumer Terms and Privacy Policy
I don't love that this is opt-in by default, but I'm happy that they're at least offering an opt-out.
dpcx··on Show HN: Smart email filters to unfuck your email
Seems like an llm keeping up with the amount of email that people receive would be cost prohibitive, either in dollars or cpu time.
dpcx··on How we exploited CodeRabbit: From simple PR to RCE and write access on 1M repos
It updates the existing PR with the tests, I believe. They'd still get reviewed and go through CI.
dpcx··on How we exploited CodeRabbit: From simple PR to RCE and write access on 1M repos
Because it has the ability to write tests for the PR in question.
dpcx··on Belkin ending support for older Wemo products
I ended up getting several Tasmota based devices from https://www.athom.tech/. Run your own RabbitMQ like service to control them, and no internet needed. They're super cheap, open-source, and flashable with your own firmware if you want.
dpcx··on They tried Made in the USA – it was too expensive for their customers
If you watch [this Climate Town video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CkgCYPe68Q), then absolutely not, the disposable fast fashion we have today is not better. It's cheaper, but it's not higher quality, it requires trans-continental shipping, and it absolutely gets thrown away in ridiculous amounts.

Overall, it's worse in just about every metric other than "I can get this fun shirt online at 2am for $6."

dpcx··on OpenAI Charges by the Minute, So Make the Minutes Shorter
https://github.com/codebicycle/videospeed has been a wonderful addition for me.
dpcx··on Omnom: Self-hosted bookmarking with searchable, wysiwyg snapshots
Is there anything like omnom or karakeep that allows for storing things without having to manually bookmark or add them to the system? I want any URL I hit to have its content sent to my service so that I can search it later.
dpcx··on Hacker News Hug of Deaf
I recall a similar company that advertised their jobs through DNS. I think they had a TXT record that suggested how to actually apply.
dpcx··on The <select> element can now be customized with CSS
This looks like what web developers have been waiting literally decades for. Possibly replacing (eventually) a bunch of JS libraries to make this all do what we want.

I don't have Chrome installed, but I'm curious how it handles multi-select fields, as I didn't see that in the example video.

dpcx··on The Frontend Treadmill
React has been around for 11 years. The amount of stuff that's online that tells you to do something with it one way when the react devs tell you to do it another is _astonishing_. And that's just from the last few years.

Or take webpack that's been around for 13 years. The way things are set up even within the last few years have changed dramatically.

If Apache configs moved as much as these systems did, no one would use Apache.

dpcx··on Plex no Longer Offers Free Remote Playback for Personal Media
I don't understand "Plex is no longer going to offer remote playback for personal media as a free service"

What cost does Plex incur when I watch something from my friends server? They're not footing the bill for bandwidth that I can tell, so why is there going to be a cost associated with this beyond "we can"?

dpcx··on 3dfx: So powerful, it's kind of ridiculous (2023)
I remember getting a Voodoo5 AGP, not knowing at the time that AGP and PCI were different. I couldn't use it for the first couple of months that I had it, and then upgraded the motherboard to one that could. I remember originally running a Gigabyte GA-6BXD with Dual Pentium IIIs, but I don't remember what I upgraded to that let me run the Voodoo5.

The V5 was the largest card I'd ever seen that wasn't a motherboard, and it ran every game I wanted to play for years!

dpcx··on Ancient switch to soft food gave us overbite–the ability to pronounce 'f's,'v'
This is discussed at length in (Breath)[0] which also discusses other things about how it's caused issues with breathing.
