dpio··on I feel bad about failing as a programmer and having to settle as a sysadmin
I’ve never heard of sysadmin as a step down from programmer.
dpio··on Blue-light glasses may not reduce eyestrain from screens, study says
Well, actually you forgot the “not really” guys too!
dpio··on Titanic director James Cameron accuses OceanGate of cutting corners
Just him? I thought that was the general consensus.
dpio··on Marie Kondo says she's 'kind of given up' on tidying up her home
Can't blame her. Once kids enter the picture chaos is assured.
dpio··on An early development unit for High Density from Palm, Inc
Interesting stuff!
dpio··on Angry headlines have increased dramatically in the last 20 years
“Headline About Angry Headlines BLASTED, then SLAMMED for being about Angry Headlines”
dpio··on Pay attention to deviations from mainstream incentives
This is one of the funniest things I’ve read on HN in a long time, thank you!
dpio··on CNN cutting back on over-hyping everything as “breaking news”
Almost feels like a The Onion headline.
dpio··on The ‘Dune’ Screenplay Was Written in Movie Master on MS-DOS
That was a great game. “Atomics!”
dpio··on GOG: Syndicate Wars, Syndicate Plus, Ultima Underworld 1 and 2 Giveaway
One thing I loved about Syndicate Wars was that, as you get more cybernetic limbs and organs for your agents they start breathing in their little profile screen.
dpio··on Ask HN: Do you miss being excited about programming/tech?
I get that feeling. Just getting old I guess.
dpio··on Dune: The Battle for Arrakis – Extended Reference (2003)
Dune 1 fan here too. I will never forget the thrill of taking over a sietch with overwhelming force.
dpio··on Nancy Pelosi Says House Will Pass Coronavirus Bill with Free Testing for All
This could happen in a literal sense too. Aren't a lot of them over 60?
dpio··on What coders can do to save lives during a coronavirus outbreak
You could also make an app to have locals check with their hospitals and get the data. Or have the doctors at the hospitals participate.
dpio··on Finding Amelia Earhart’s Plane Seemed Impossible – Then Came a Startling Clue
This is exciting news!
dpio··on The hidden costs of engineering time in technical interviewing
That's a good question, why don't recruiting firms filter leads through technical guys rather than just looking for term matches?
dpio··on OpenDUNE – An open-source recreation of the game Dune II
Yes! Such a great game. I remember playing it frequently just to find all the sietches. Then when the atomics came in and Gurney Halleck was like, "OMG ATOMICS!"

This game had so many great moments. One that pops into mind is sending Fremen units to attack a Harkonnen base and they would literally start marching towards them on the map. Another is how the NPC's eyes wound randomly bulge when you were talking to them.

dpio··on Show HN: My embarrassing personal website from the 90s
Maybe a little embarrassing, but overall beautiful just as a reminder of how innocent the internet, and most people on it, were back then.
dpio··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (October 2016)
Location: North Orange County, CA Remote: Yes Willing to relocate: No Technologies: PHP, MySQL, Python, Django, Javascript, Jquery, Objective-C, Linux, Photoshop. Resume/CV: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dchoung Email: david at dchoung.com
dpio··on Ask HN: Are all recruiter calls this bad?
I'd say most, but not all.
dpio··on Marvel Comics API
It's just info on the comics, superhero appearances, crossovers. Like someone previously said, just metadata. You can't pull Marvel Universe data like the height of all the X-Men from shortest to tallest or how many planets Galactus has eaten.
dpio··on How to make a DIY home alarm system with a raspberry pi and a webcam
Awesome, I've got a similar setup, I use BitTorrent sync though to send the files. The problem with that is I need one local computer to be on in order for it to sync, then I connect that local computer's folder with Dropbox to view screenshots remotely. I've also been looking at removing the IR filter for night time viewing, there are a few blog posts on the c270 specifically, but I haven't dived into that part of the project yet.
dpio··on A mobile device review, 10 years ago
I miss Graffiti. Graffiti 1, not 2.
dpio··on Is Stephen Elop the worst CEO ever?
No, that title goes to Leo Apotheker.
dpio··on I'm a former Miso engineer and the founders screwed me out of 10k
Yeah seriously, haha.
dpio··on Ask HN: Dealing with a crush at work
If you go further with this then one of you has to leave. Most likely her, but only because you own the company, of course.
dpio··on USRobotics PalmPilot Personal review
I was the same way.
dpio··on Why you shouldn't buy a Mac
Should've titled it "why you shouldn't buy a mac pro".
dpio··on Blizzard Lays Off 600, Including About 60 Developers
Indeed, this could be potentially awesome for southern California tech.
dpio··on PHP Dev wants to learn a framework Symphony or Rails?
Ruby/Rails sounds cool from what I hear.
