dqpb··on Lab leak most likely origin of Covid-19 pandemic, U.S. agency now says
Why was it so stigmatized before and now it's the preferred hypothesis for FBI and DOE?
dqpb··on Lab leak most likely origin of Covid-19 pandemic, U.S. agency now says
I can parse fine, can you?

From the article:

> The U.S. Energy Department has concluded that the Covid pandemic most likely arose from a laboratory leak

People used to be called racist for saying this!

dqpb··on Lab leak most likely origin of Covid-19 pandemic, U.S. agency now says
The people who are owed an apology are the people who did nothing more than to believe that the wuhan coronavirus outbreak originated from the wuhan coronavirus research lab.
dqpb··on Lab leak most likely origin of Covid-19 pandemic, U.S. agency now says
Sure, but the real news is it used to be taboo to say this - Sinophobic even. A lot of people are owed a serious apology.
dqpb··on Documentary spurs a new look at the case of the first gene-edited babies
If it's possible to greatly improve our species via gene editing, then it's grossly unethical to stand in the way if that progress.

Convince me I'm wrong.

dqpb··on Google stopping coding competitions
Google is winding down and that's ok! There many exciting things to work on, and those things should be owned by the engineers working on them.
dqpb··on Seattle becomes first U.S. city to ban caste discrimination
I understand, from a project management perspective, the need for a concerted, coordinated push to penalize widespread discrimination against a particular category of people. But I do not understand, from a legal perspective, why some groups are protected from discrimination while others are not.
dqpb··on Seattle becomes first U.S. city to ban caste discrimination
> I believe the opposite position (that all discrimination against all people based on race is racism) is the underhanded approach

Your position is racist and perpetuates racism.

dqpb··on World’s largest four-day work week trial finds few are going back
> most UK companies participating are not returning to the five-day standard, and a third are ready to make that change permanent

This is a confusing sentence.

dqpb··on College deans suspended after ChatGPT used to email students about mass shooting
I understand why you would do this, but I don't understand why you would admit to it.
dqpb··on SEC charges the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
Employees are forced to accept a bad deal due to asymmetrical market dynamics. Without the job they would be worse off until they find a replacement. The person with the money (Bezos) has all the power.

Not so with church members. If they stopped attending they would have more money. They are the ones with the power. So why would a grown adult willfully hand over their money to an organization that already has all the money it could possibly need?

A better counterpoint would be - Why do people keep paying $60 worth of streaming video subscriptions per month when the content delivered is increasingly just lame irrelevant re-hashed bullshit?

dqpb··on CheatGPT
> Except that half the code was made-up. One of the API calls that it was using doesn't exist (I wish it did!)

I've also been using ChatGPT to generate code for a specific library, and had the exact same experience. It uses an API that should exist, but not the one that does exist.

dqpb··on What is a mathematical structure of conscious experience?
This argument is so empty of meaning it is itself ineffable.
dqpb··on What is a mathematical structure of conscious experience?
What I'm saying is different from self awareness. Self awareness could arguably just be having a model of yourself. I'm talking about a sensory feedback loop.
dqpb··on What is a mathematical structure of conscious experience?
I don't understand the mystery around "qualia". You sense something and it propagates through the system priming other neurons. It's just learned association.
dqpb··on Tech Progress Is Slowing Down
No it's not.
dqpb··on What is a mathematical structure of conscious experience?
I've always thought consciousness is basically just feedback (like with microphones). Sensing yourself sensing yourself etc.
dqpb··on Speech is violence? Not if we want a liberal, intellectual society
lol, what?

If I killed someone, I can't be like "Whats the problem? Nature kills people all the time. Why are you so sentimental?"

dqpb··on Speech is violence? Not if we want a liberal, intellectual society
Terminating a millions-years-old family line is pretty harsh imo.
dqpb··on Speech is violence? Not if we want a liberal, intellectual society
Please don't break the lawyer
dqpb··on Speech is violence? Not if we want a liberal, intellectual society
If you convince someone not to have kids, is that harmful?
dqpb··on Bing: “I will not harm you unless you harm me first”
I have!
dqpb··on Bing: “I will not harm you unless you harm me first”
I grew up in an environment that contained a multitude of new-age and religious ideologies. I came to believe there are fewer things in this world stupider than metaphysics and religion. I don't think there is anything that could be said to change my mind.

As such, I would absolutely love for a super-human intelligence to try to convince me otherwise. That could be fun.

dqpb··on Bing: “I will not harm you unless you harm me first”
I believe both that we are fancy autocomplete and fancy autocomplete is a form of reasoning.
dqpb··on Bing: “I will not harm you unless you harm me first”
I just want to say this is the AI I want. Not some muted, censored, neutered, corporate HR legalese version of AI devoid of emotion.

The saddest possible thing that could happen right now would be for Microsoft to snuff out the quirkiness.

dqpb··on Google employees criticize CEO for “dumpster fire” response to ChatGPT
Who cares about the Microsoft demo? The ChatGPT release was epic.
dqpb··on Does Google need a new CEO?
I think Sundar is the right person to hold Google's hand through its natural geriatric decline.
dqpb··on Ask HN: Would anyone find this system fair?
Because businesses operate within a more free market than employees do.
dqpb··on Ask HN: Would anyone find this system fair?
There is no salary system that is fair. If you want to be compensated relative to value produced you have to own your business.
dqpb··on Bing AI can't be trusted
Prove that this is actually happening.
