dr01d··on DeepMind says reinforcement learning is ‘enough’ to reach general AI
Probably because if we didn't have the ability to forget and turn off often we would pretty quickly kill ourselves to end the horror of our existence?
dr01d··on Kind - run local Kubernetes clusters using Docker
Used kind + skaffold for 6 months and it was pretty solid. However, eventually switched to k3d and tilt and feeling like this combo is amazing. Cluster takes 2 seconds to create now.
dr01d··on How would you prepare for a 30 day coronavirus quarantine in your home?
Amazon prime
dr01d··on I Was Wrong about Nix
I would recommend multistage build but with distroless as final. https://github.com/GoogleContainerTools/distroless
dr01d··on Ask HN: Software teams, would you use this GitHub/Slack integration?
1. No sorry. Slack is already too chatty with bots and I end up leaving channels with git related output. I like to do git things in GitHub,gitlab, or terminal where I have full access to the toolsets. Email serves fine for notifications on PRs or things I have marked as watch.

2. No.

3. I don't think so. People seem to be quick to add these types of integrations but after 500 messages from git activity everyone ignores them or turns them off.

All my opinions of course. Maybe other people will love this.

dr01d··on U.S. Gov Privacy Watchdog Under Pressure to Recommend Facial Recognition Ban
I'm using opencv with facial detection running in the browser as JavaScript. The technology is here and isn't going away.

Realistically, smartphones are tracking everyone all the time and provide rich datasets. Camera, microphone, and GPS. If you turn off location services your phone still connects to cell towers, WiFi access points, and Bluetooth beacons, as you drive or walk around throughout your day.

dr01d··on U.S. Gov Privacy Watchdog Under Pressure to Recommend Facial Recognition Ban
You can turn off your phone. You can't turn off the 1000s of phones around you that you don't control. With cameras, microphones, and GPS.
dr01d··on Echo Frames – Eyeglasses with Alexa
> If I liked Alexa... I could see myself being into this product.

Whether you like it or not you will be in their product if people are walking around in public or at work while wearing these. Isn't the future great?

dr01d··on Echo Frames – Eyeglasses with Alexa
The value prop isn't for the consumer, it's for Amazon. Stuffing Alexa into anything and everything means more usage overall and a more attractive platform for companies looking to sell their wares.
dr01d··on The Internet Relies on People Working for Free
The upside is the satisfaction of solving sometimes interesting problems. Some people do crossword puzzles, some play video games. A rare few write operating systems used by perhaps billions of people.
dr01d··on Ask HN: Is a Recession Coming?
The media are the same ones who brought us the Kardashians. Find and read some books.
dr01d··on Mega-Trees Are the New Weapon Against Climate Change
Do they drop mega-seeds?
dr01d··on Startup Says It’s Changing Eye Care for the Better. Others See It Differently
I see what you did there
dr01d··on History and Effective Use of Vim
I would agree, but then I found this: https://vim-bootstrap.com/ and it is sooooo nice. I no longer have to think about configuring vim or managing plugins because it is done. Esp for golang.
dr01d··on Neuralink Live Stream [video]
I don't think it is taking an advantage away. New inventions mean new opportunities and doors opening not closing.
dr01d··on Neuralink Live Stream [video]
Humans driving cars is probably unfathomable to chimpanzees.
dr01d··on Declined Proposal: A built-in Go error check function, “try”
This is why we have nice things!
dr01d··on Ask HN: What would increase your team's productivity?
Dropping jira.
dr01d··on The Collapsing Crime Rates of the ’90s Might Have Been Driven by Cellphones
Nope. Video games IMO. Cheap awesome entertainment for basically everyone. Everyone can afford consoles and escape reality. Why act out aggression in real life and risk prison when video games let you do all that and more?
dr01d··on Database IDs Have No Place in URIs (2008)
Uuids
dr01d··on IT Runs on Java 8
Oracle
dr01d··on Stop Wasting Money on Unnecessary Monthly Subscriptions
Requires a subscription to read. Nice.
dr01d··on Serving Vue.js Apps on GitHub Pages
You could just use gitlab: https://gitlab.com/pages?page=1

Much better imo

dr01d··on California's San Bernardino County restricts construction of solar, wind farms
Birds literally burst into flames in the air.
dr01d··on When last checked, nytimes.com was loading 29 third-party trackers
Gotta catch em all
dr01d··on “Lambda and serverless is one of the worst forms of proprietary lock-in” (2017)
Vendors have 2 core requirements to continue operating: get new customers and keep the existing ones. Getting new customers requires constant innovation, marketing spend, providing value, etc. Keeping existing customers only requires making the pain of leaving greater than the pain of staying.
dr01d··on “Lambda and serverless is one of the worst forms of proprietary lock-in” (2017)
Zero maintenance? What about standing up multiple environments for staging, prod? Sharing secrets ,keys, and env vars? Deployments? Logging? No migration time down the line? I'm pretty sure GCP, Azure don't have Lambda, SQS, or EC2 load balancers so you absolutely will have migration time if you have to retool your implementation to switch cloud providers or products.
dr01d··on “Lambda and serverless is one of the worst forms of proprietary lock-in” (2017)
In most cases, very few companies have products that need to scale to extreme load day 1 or even year 1. IMO, instead of reaching for the latest shiny cloud product, try building initially with traditional databases, load balancing, and caching first. You can actually go very far on unsexy old stuff. Overall, this approach will make migration easier in the cloud and you can always evolve parts of your stack based on your actual needs later. Justify switching out to proprietary products like lambdas, etc once your system actually requires it and then weigh your options carefully. Everyone jumping on the bandwagon these days needs to realize: a LOT of huge systems are still rocking PHP and MySQL and chasing new cloud products is a never ending process.
dr01d··on Ask HN: How do you deal with or improve software development estimates?
Get 3 engineers to do estimation on the same work. Not only helps to get better estimations, but also helps to understand people's strengths and weaknesses on tasks as well as inform more people of a project specifics. Also PERT: https://www.techrepublic.com/blog/it-consultant/use-pert-tec...
dr01d··on An Easier Way to Build Alexa Skills Using Python
gah, what the heck is wrong with that woman's head on the homepage. Nightmare fuel.
