dramm··on Tell HN: Bob Cringely has died
Ah man there is a blast from the past. Fucked Company was so interesting and entertaining at the time.
dramm··on When did Google get so weird?
Ah yes, do no evil. It takes quite a screwed up company to stuff this toxic fake friend/therapy bullshit into a frigging search engine. And to do that from the position of having some of the weaker AI model performance out there is even more galling. When somebody harms themselves after dealing with this kind of shit I hope they or their surviving family get to take Google to the cleaners.
dramm··on Show HN: I made a flight simulator, except you're just a passenger
Impressive. I'm imagining the simulator being useful for emergency training. Like they have run out of the salmon in First Class and only have chicken left. Or the kid sitting between you and their parent has just thrown up--on you. But it needs security screening, baggage checkin, delayed flights, drunk passengers. Ah the joys of airline flight. Maybe all that could be added and Zoom could sponsor the game :-)
dramm··on Show HN: What if the speed of light was 5 km/h?
No doubt inspired by George Gamow's Mr.Tompkins in Wonderland (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr_Tompkins). That was recommended reading for entering Physics undergrads when I did my degree.
dramm··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
I am surprised it has taken the Automattic board so long, just don't understand that.
dramm··on iPhone Duo
This is the kind of product the make all out lives better. I mean the pure entertainment value it will bring being able to watch eager Apple fan bois new iPhone Duo screen crack, or the hinges start grinding, or ...
dramm··on Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads
Ha. For quite a while it was very small team and had to be for that kind of brain surgery, I have no idea how large it finally grew. Founders Mendel Rosenblum and Ed Bugnion in the early days. I remember when we hired Ole, Carl, Keith Adams, and Ganesh Venkitachalam. And we hired Steve Herrod to run the monitor team, and relieve Mendel from doing that. I was not in the loop on hiring those developers, no reason to be. Except I remember interviewing Steve and Diane talking to me before the interview to be clear I was there to help sell joining VMware to Steve. I did not need to be convinced hard to do that :-) I'm sure I'm missing other key early monitor folks but those memories are fading...
dramm··on Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads
And I know that sounds like victim blaming. Anybody stuck in this situation has my empathy. But I just don't know how to get it across to some company execs/leaders that they have been needing to get their act together and get off VMware for coming on near 3 years now.
dramm··on Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads
You are hallucinating and don't have any clue what you are talking about (VMware employee #10/11 -- I lost count, First Director of PM at VMware).

VMwware sure as hell did not invent the hypervisor, and we were damn careful not to ever claim that. The early unique IP was how to enable a hypervisor to use dynamic translation where required to work around non-virtualizable x86 instructions, we also did well with how to package a hypervisor to run on a host/share host devices etc. Over time that early differentiation went away as we helped encourage CPU vendors to include better hardware virtualization support. And the other big thing we had was just a market focus/desire to deliver value/delight nerdy users like ourselves.

Who is the granddaddy of hypervisors? It sure ain't KVM, and it sure ain't VMware. That would be IBM. They had decades of doing hypervisors on the mainframe when we were getting started as a tiny startup. They sure know a lot about hypervisors and had a x86 hypervisor research project in Watson labs. We were humbled when IBM fellow Rich Oehler came to us wanting to partner because he saw how far ahead we were. That was years before KVM even got started. The IBM collaboration, lead to years of great work with IBM, who helped VMwware get going with ESX Server. Although the focus of VMware since founding was always to end up focusing on the data center/server market we could not have done that so well and so fast without IBM and sales and GTM cooperation.

Now good on KVM and others for pushing open hypervisor technology, and any company in this space who actually cares about their users and customers. I hope KVM helps pound VMware/Broadcom into the dirt.

Edit: typos

Leaving VMware just got harder? What? NO! It just became more obvious that you've failed if you are still stuck there. (VMware employee #10/11 -- I lost count. First Director of PM).
dramm··on Evidence of Fraud in an Influential Study About Procrastination
Dan Ariely is well past the point that he needs to not be a faculty member at Duke University. Data Coda do a fantastic job ferreting out academic fraud. With these fraudulent behavioral science experiments like this relying on printed papers/markups, and coauthors not present and who did not even see the raw data, I wonder if the experiment was ever actually conducted. I would love to see that question answered where fraud is suspected, something I'd hope IRBs would step up to do.
dramm··on Borges Labyrinth in Venice reopens to the public
Nigel specified the height of the Borges labyrinth hedges in inches mistaking them for feet.
dramm··on Nebula Sans
In what Universe does worrying about the typeface of your startup effort matter? Google for one has some just lovely free to use high quality typefaces. Do I care about design, hell yes, for one I worked for Adobe helping introduce InDesign, etc. but this makes no sense.
dramm··on How credit card rewards became a $9.2B wealth transfer
I was working with a team pitching a new marketing database system to Discover Card decades ago. When we were first shown around their HQ which was a kind of hybrid open floor plan with lots of cubicles there was a large office with fancy Queen Anne? style furniture in it, IIRC an EA or two sitting outside. it looked nice but kinda out of place in a sea of cubicles and standard office furniture. I asked who's office that was and was told it's Nancy Donovan's (we were meeting with her team). But they did not describe Nancy as the head of Marketing and Sales etc., they described her as "the person who developed the cashback program". I liked their clarity about recognizing what worked.
dramm··on Grand jury declines to indict Ohio man charged with destroying Flock camera
I want to buy Cody Morelock a fancy ham sandwich.
dramm··on Finger: the 1971 social network that never died
I occasionally find myself longing for talk(1) to actually work on Macs.
dramm··on Show HN: I spent 2 years designing a mechanical Magic Keyboard
Looks very interesting, love to see the innovation/effort to go beyond the usual. What would be great for me is a version with Mac/vt-100 style number pad. Even mechanical keyboards that claim to be Mac focused largely have PC number pad layouts, and that is a pain with some software like Pro Tools keyboard shortcuts, and some legacy DEC terminal emulation needs.
dramm··on Oxide Computer raises $445M (SEC Form D)
So with all the money raised, it's telling me there is a chance of a home-lab Oxide rack :-) (Congrats guys)

dramm··on Am I German or Autistic?
I'm Australian, I didn't finish the stupid test.
dramm··on Grafeo – A fast, lean, embeddable graph database built in Rust
ACID, so let’s see the Jepsen tests.
dramm··on Meta Horizon Worlds on Meta Quest is being discontinued
Horizon Worlds was always going to be a disaster. Complete crazy goals. An embarrassing mess of dopey looking legless avatars, then trying to force Meta employees to use it (everybody I knew there hated it). At this point I would like Palmer Luckey to take back what is left of Occulus, the tech has (much more modest) opportunities in gaming, entertainment, enterprise, military uses. Zuckerberg should pay him to take it.
dramm··on Lost Doctor Who episodes found
Hopefully some day somebody will build a Tardis and travel back in time and eliminate the BBC morons who allowed all this destruction.
dramm··on Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan launches dark-money group to influence CA politics
Good. I'll take Gary Tan and his demonstrated efforts to clean up a corrupt dysfunctional San Francisco over any opponent. Oh yes and fuck the Nimbys.
dramm··on Claude Code is suddenly everywhere inside Microsoft
It's the horrible "IBM Watson" marketing of our time, and I expect will do as badly for Microsoft as Watson did for IBM.
dramm··on Microsoft Office renamed to “Microsoft 365 Copilot app”
I missed that Microsoft had been acquired by The Onion.
