drekipus··on Digital minimalism
I use the minimalist phone launcher which has the option to set up blocking schedules for certain apps.

Between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. I cannot use YouTube, Vivaldi, The real estate app, WhatsApp, etc.

If I want to unblock it I have to wait down a 3-minute timer to make sure that I really want to turn off the blocker

Left and right partisan politics is such a stupid red herring. You can easily get any vowed xyz to agree with most points when pointing out the bad.

Most of us are trying to make a better society for ourselves and our families, so there's a lot more that we unify over rather than disagree on.

The power structures don't want us to unify though, because that would be threatening.

The forefathers gave the citizens the right to arms for a reason.

"The prophecies foretold!"

(Aside, I just finished reading the mistborn trilogy)

drekipus··on "I'm on a war footing": Terry Tao and the crisis in math
Is there any evidence that the thinking and creativity that we enjoyed has disappeared?

I'm firmly in the "programming is fun" camp, I enjoy thinking about the problems and solutions, but if I can get a LLM to deal with boilerplate then that's all the better for me.

drekipus··on Show HN: Happy Hangul Day! An RNN for Generating Korean Handwriting Strokes
This is really cool, I wanted to do something similar for hanzi (Chinese characters) so I could practise Chinese handwriting.
drekipus··on Theranos.world

drekipus··on Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?
I can't believe I haven't made that connection myself tbh
drekipus··on Using Opus 5.5 to discover a new eyewitness record of the dodo
If you ask it to say "I am alive" it has to be able to respond with "I am alive"
drekipus··on Using Opus 5.5 to discover a new eyewitness record of the dodo
They adapt to the buttons you press. Thus, intelligent and capable of feeling pain.
drekipus··on Go Concurrency Distilled
The elixir documentary doesn't quite have the same zest
drekipus··on An airport cooled by natural ventilation
I'm convinced there's forces out there who are trying to make these projects deliberately not work so that we can all collectively discredit the idea.

Naturally ventilated airports would probably have issues with fumes. Might not be a great idea.

If I believe correctly the Dyson headquarters was designed to be fairly efficient as well.

My father in laws house was intentionally designed to be naturally ventilated, thermal mass concrete slab in the middle, etc. And it's comfortably cool even on 40 degree days.

drekipus··on Winning the visa lottery
I'm pretty sure you have to have graduated elementary school to be able to post here.

I'll happily admit I'm wrong though, in light of evidence before me

Could it be that atheists are the ones who are ignoring reality?
drekipus··on Australia says it could follow Canada in forging deeper ties with EU
Right, so the US had a high of 35% and then dropped and has never been higher than that.

I just wanted to check the OPs survey because it could have been something different i.e.: that supports the claim

drekipus··on Australia says it could follow Canada in forging deeper ties with EU
I don't believe that. Can you find this survey you were talking about?
drekipus··on An agent fleet needs a new kind of OS, not a bigger harness

drekipus··on Writing a book about software engineering, what do you want in it?
Hey all,

I want to write a book about software engineering, but I want to make it applicable for people. So I've put up the above survey so that people can share some of their thoughts and experiences.

Please feel free to fill in the questionnaire or write some comments below if you have some ideas on what you're looking for.

drekipus··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
> he insists that the only way to do performance is to write unmaintainable code

This is new to me, where does he say this specifically?

Not to white knight Casey but his niche has been in rendering and graphics afaik , where everything he does have to fit inbetween frames, so it makes sense to be a "performance maximalist" in that environment.

It could be that you and he are working on different sets of problems with different tools.

But I'd be really interested I where he says you must write unmaintainable code.

Also (my take) : if you're looking at "clean code" to find abstractions that allow things to be refactored, then I think that's probably not the type of performance he's talking about for you. LLMs can do that type of work. FWIW I think he refactors from what things ought to be, not how they are currently

drekipus··on Taste Is All That's Left
Perhaps it's... "simple to implement."

Usually it can be that the complex artifact is the simplest to implement. It's harder to make the simple thing

Classic, Rich Hicky, "simple made, easy" talk reference.

drekipus··on Taste Is All That's Left
This was a great and resonant post. Don't worry about the green names.

I think there is almost a split between people who have read ZAOMM and people who have not.

I recently made a post in my circles about how "meaning" is what human quality is. If you look at classical art a lot of it could look objectively nonsense and have technical mistakes, but just because the machine can make a picture does not mean that it attributes any meaning or communicate any intention. The difference between human-made classical artwork and machine-made classical artwork is the meaning and symbology behind it

drekipus··on Is AI reasoning right for the wrong reasons?
Yes, because they are human and that is the whole point.

An LLM can't find anything interesting except that it parroted the word interesting from prior written human text.

drekipus··on Is AI reasoning right for the wrong reasons?
Chinese are human.

Our only reference point with an alien philosophy would be that we can only approach it from human basis

drekipus··on Is AI reasoning right for the wrong reasons?
I think that's kind of what I'm trying to say.

"A philosophy of LLMs" - has no reference point without being grounded in human experience.

It is only meaningful when we apply what it means to humans.

"a philosophy of a bash script." does not make sense. Only "philosophy of the action of writing the bash script, of which this is an artifact of" - the human who wrote it intentionally.

LLMs apply statistics to mash inputs and produce outputs, almost like `cat` with extra steps: We can't ask for "what was the philosophy behind the action `cat` applied" - why would we bother asking about the philosophy of an LLM? Better questions would be the philosophy of those who prompt it, built it, the material that went into it, the people who write the safeguards, the people who architected it. Etc.

It is not an isolated environment without reference points.
