drivingmissm··on Sony’s 2001 offer from Steve Jobs to run Mac OS on Vaio laptops
Sony would have passed because of iTunes, Sony isn't going to sell hardware that plays songs from Sony Music and pays Apple as the middle man.
drivingmissm··on Show HN: Codewars
This is awesome! You should seriously add PHP. Our community is probably the largest and has many inexperienced programmers who would really benefit from Codewars.
drivingmissm··on Show HN: thedaywefightback.js
I'm in the advocacy space and you aren't collecting enough information to deliver the emails to Congress, the web forms require many other pieces of information like a title (Mr./Mrs. etc) and often a phone number. Better to take off the email option than mislead the public that it will be delivered.

drivingmissm··on Network Solutions Auto-Enroll: $1,850
They aren't a natural monopoly-- in the U.S. telecom and video cable (cable internet) are heavily regulated government-granted monopolies. Most U.S. local governments, for example, provide for only one or two cable providers.
drivingmissm··on The World’s Best Bounty Hunter Is 4-Foot-11. Here’s How She Hunts
Bounty hunting has been around forever and is a very dynamic and effective part of the law enforcement system.
drivingmissm··on GoDaddy ends support for Ruby as of 23/01/2014
GoDaddy actively pushed terrible SOPA legislation http://godaddyboycott.org/

Their past ad campaigns have been very trashy and sexist as well.

Their pricing is higher than other registrars, unless you play their discount/coupon games.

drivingmissm··on Architect's Dream House: Less Than 200 Square Feet
Actually most advanced societies are not producing enough children to keep the population stable.
drivingmissm··on Architect's Dream House: Less Than 200 Square Feet
Yeah it is just a tricked out mobile home.
drivingmissm··on Chicago makes Computer Science a core subject
Charter schools are, in fact, public schools. They just aren't administered by the centralized government system.
drivingmissm··on Attach anything to anything with sugru and magnets
Children ingesting magnets is growing problem that can be fatal. For use in a household setting, it is irresponsible to sell smooth, shiny magnets that are of a size that can be swallowed.

drivingmissm··on Should RapGenius be able to "negotiate" with Matt Cutts and Google?
IP and patents are not "unregulated capitalism" they are actually political creations enforced by a legal regime.
drivingmissm··on Secret contract tied NSA and security industry pioneer
Yes, Iran's totalitarian leadership is a threat to its neighbors, particularly Israel.
drivingmissm··on Canada's top court has overturned all restrictions on prostitution
Single parent households are the single biggest cause of child poverty...there are cultural and lifestyle factors at play.
drivingmissm··on Tell HN: Nest Software Update Failed and Now We're Freezing
Update: Just got through to tech, they are working late. Apparently our issue is an edge case but there are a bunch of problems with their OS update and automatic rollback. Here's the temporary fix: to reboot a Nest, press it for 10 or 15 seconds. Then, when the Nest is booting up, go into Settings and disconnect the Nest from the Internet so it doesn't try to software update endlessly. That has worked and we thankfully have heat again. I generally like my Nest and have found their support to be excellent, so I'm pretty patient, but it is definitely exasperating to hold a crying baby while calling tech support in the middle of the night because of a failed software update on my thermostat!
drivingmissm··on Google Made My Daughter Cry Today
COPPA compliance includes no marketing to children, even with parental consent. So they'd have to operate a completely different platform for children. Plus their business model is based on marketing, so they'd take a huge loss operating a second platform for kids. It is stupid to expect Google to accommodate children.
drivingmissm··on Google Made My Daughter Cry Today
It isn't a belief. Even if Google obtained parental consent by law it still can't market to children-- since Google's services are a giant marketing engine, it is reasonable for them to disable children's accounts.
drivingmissm··on Google Made My Daughter Cry Today
The law goes a lot further than that, the law prevents Google from marketing to children, so it would have to disable ALL of its marketing and tracking programs for children's accounts. It is reasonable for Google to scuttle the account instead, these services are not intended for children.
drivingmissm··on Computer-driven cars will convulse the automotive industry
The problem in the U.S. is that the labor unions control rail, and stifle all innovation.
drivingmissm··on How do you get a job in North Korea?
The problem is that socialism and totalitarianism are separated only by degree. Socialism, by definition, uses government force to take resources/freedom/time/opportunity from some people and redistributes those goods to politically favored groups.
drivingmissm··on A universal income is not such a silly idea
The growth in the divide is caused by changes in CEO compensation that reward CEOs of public companies with large stock option rewards. In theory this is a reform-- only CEOs with rising stocks should get paid. Also just looking at the top public companies isn't really representative of the economy as a whole. The median CEO really makes around $360,000, which is a respectable 9-1 ratio.

drivingmissm··on What happens when the U.S. President uses your startup for a conference call
Normally businesses don't disclose who their customers are without prior approval.
drivingmissm··on Why I Canceled Amazon Prime
I think DHL left the US domestic market for overnight.
drivingmissm··on Why I Canceled Amazon Prime
I live in a mountainous area and the Postal Service won't deliver to my house. (FedEx and UPS will). So FedEx Smart Post creates the same problem for me-- I have to go to town during Post Office hours to pick up the package (and usually wait in line). I would also pay for a UPS/FedEx only Prime. I sometimes force the issue for important or large deliveries by ordering it Next Day for $3.99 more, which ensures UPS/FedEx to my home.
drivingmissm··on This Founder Made $99 from $82.5mn Exit; The Lesson?
It really shouldn't be painful to see people succeed. Successful investors are putting money back into the startup ecosystem. Venture capitalism funds amazing technologies and businesses that can't get capital through traditional banking or stock/bond markets (including life saving medical treatments and devices)
drivingmissm··on A living death: Sentenced to die behind bars for what?
U.S. violent crime rates have plummeted in part because of higher incarceration. A lot of people on this list don't remember when cities like New York and Washington, DC were very dangerous places and all native born inhabitants were leaving.
drivingmissm··on Show HN: Harp Platform now available to the public
Should be "boat". Freudian slip!

"...and the community gets a bloat load of terrific open source libraries along the way."
