dromen··on ‘Silicon Valley,’ S6E2 – a billion dollars to violate your principles
Sounds like learned helplessness to me.

The only sensible inner practice I've found is refinement of character. It works both when practiced publicly and when practiced privately.

And aspects of character can be built, sustained and recycled. Like anything.

Those people actually become larger by virtue of occupying their minds with money. Numbers signify connections (groups) so it's just natural.

It's a lack of exchange caused by lack of specificity of requests and a lack of discernment on the part of the hubs.

dromen··on Isolation, anxiety, and depression in the remote workplace
Let me attempt to draw you a pyramid of home location needs:

5. Political situation - not a warzone? Not under sharia? Very democratic, or key to world issues you consider important?

4. Climate - no tundra/sahara? Would you benefit from living near the sea?

3. Food - is the local food edible? Is the local food cheap, including the restaurants? Or is it just very good?

2. Access to nature - do you want to try mountain ranges? Forests? A kind of people you like having around? If I feel disconnected from the city, I just use the public utilities more: coffee, beer, parks and benches for reading on. Not quite collecting mushrooms in the forest but I'm getting there.

1. Culture and language - any cultures you want to learn about? New languages? What would bring your personal and professional development in harmony?

Good luck!

P.S.: The Netherlands are decent. Everything is very "duidelijk", clear, and direct. People don't mind speaking English and speak it well. Weather is mild, can be a bit rainy but not half as bad as Britain. Housing aplenty for a programmer's salary. Consider visiting for a week or so if it peaks your interest.

dromen··on Habits of Expert Software Designers
That tactic makes sense when you want to communicate to people on a much lower level than you are at, and you want them to get the surface level rapidly.

If this were to be levied at me accusingly I'd throw a programming Bible at them, get thee hence and study.

dromen··on Men Are Waiting to Share Some Feelings (2018)
However, MAN spaces are everywhere, Japan especially is having great success creating spaces that are exclusively occupied by a single man for weeks, and sometimes years at a time.
dromen··on Men Are Waiting to Share Some Feelings (2018)
You're throwing swines to the pearls, it doesn't work that way either.
dromen··on Cash/Consent: The war on sex work
No, it was a platform for free speech and sharing images, which happened to include discussions between national socialists. It wasn't a "Neo-Nazi" platform any more than YouTube is.

"Elliot Rodger's Retribution" was posted on YouTube. How is this situation distinct from the Isla Vista one? E.g., why should YouTube not be blockaded, other than for reasons of corruption and nepotism?

dromen··on Men Are Waiting to Share Some Feelings (2018)
They're not! Confidence and unregulated overt vulnerability are conflicting (but not precisely opposite).

By acknowledging the possibility that you may have done something wrong, you make yourself vulnerable to judgment, and by doing so confidently you gain respect. Facing judgment is a sign of confidence and it requires making yourself vulnerable.

In a more subtle example, showing signs of vulnerability in personal relations is a way of letting others know you, and that takes courage. There'd be no point to having social interactions if you were invulnerable, any interaction would literally be inconsequential for you and thus unmotivated.

You "dress up" the vulnerability with a higher level strength (e.g. the capacity to listen to and analyze your own shortcomings), and then it's all good.

There's a difference between being vulnerable, and putting yourself in a situation that will hurt you. It's fine to show yourself vulnerable if you can do so in a way that incentives good behavior from your peers.

dromen··on Non-Robust Arithmetic as Art
Some syntax errors re.: "chosenOrient" and "orientRobust"? I'm on Firefox 60.8 and uBO but not blocking stringently, just Google Analytics from the logs.

I got overloaded by the page being fully editable/interactive AND with errors AND with foreign mathematical constructs. Somehow the possibility to edit it makes me walk on eggshells, even if it's just a local edit.

It otherwise looks good, I'd probably enjoy reading it if I was more fit. I'm going to take a walk outside now, thanks for the unintended inspiration.

dromen··on Linus' reply on Git and SHA-1 collision
What do you mean by detectable in the context of Git-as-append-only-log?
dromen··on Linus' reply on Git and SHA-1 collision
Some more advanced Git operations (I sadly never needed so far) can be used to break the "append only" part, right?

Like for instance rebases?

dromen··on WhatsApp launches Status, an encrypted Snapchat Stories clone
Can you use Whatsapp to talk to friends on Telegram or Messenger?

We're in a period of closed chat ecosystems (Joe Schmoe doesn't use Matrix, IRC or XMPP) and fairly spacious smartphone storage, which in my circles means that people tend to be quite willing to install an extra app for chatting.

A bunch of my friends use Signal, and the ones that don't I communicate with on WhatsApp.

dromen··on France’s military is training eagles to attack drones
Uhm... I don't think it's hard at all to acquire the materials to build a bomb. I'm not disputing it's still the hard part of planning a terrorist attack, still... A teenager can get a kilo of ammonium nitrate online for 10 dollars, at least where I live.

Maybe ANFO bombs aren't that powerful, but those can't be the only easy options for DIY bombs.

I don't really see how it's a useful priority to try to physically stop terrorist attacks. There obviously aren't that many people who successfully commit them (because the number of related deaths is tiny) and the talk of "well we're stopping a load of them you just don't know because it's classified", yeah... they say that, but why should I believe unqualified statements about other people's secrets?

Why not focus on the factors that make people radicalize, and work on reducing those?

I guess it makes shitty headlines compared to "Kevlar-coated military drone hunting eagles kick evil khaki-person ass".

dromen··on US Customs block Canadian man after reading his Scruff profile
What if you don't have social media accounts?

Reports like this tend to trigger a Google search for my own name and correspondence with all sites that show up, "please delete all my shit".

Finally deleted my Facebook account last week, too.

Maybe we need a religion that forbids using social media, or more broadly, your real identity online?

dromen··on Iceland knows how to stop teen substance abuse
Like how moms aren't "levels of access"? I don't understand what you're trying to say.
dromen··on Rust vs. Go
You could store them as source files with a hashbang, and make something like "rustrun" which compiles a single Rust source code file and runs the resulting executable? That should take ~15 minutes.

I do wish there was an actual Rust interpreter.

dromen··on Intel Management Engine cleaner
Can't the FBI request services from the NSA?

And there have been versions of the Intel ME in the wild with known remote exploits AFAIK.

dromen··on Unexpectedly Good Things VR Will Probably Cause (2016)
I recently tried the PlayStation VR in a store; it was a really strange experience to look down at myself when playing the EVE demo, to find out I a) had a body and b) it was of the other gender.

I thought that was the most interesting part of the experience; the spaceships looked pretty flat in the distance and I was sad that my hands in-game didn't move along with my controller (as they do in some games).

dromen··on Feeling safer online with Firefox
If your threat model includes targeted attacks I'd have serious doubts even about using Curl.
dromen··on WhatsApp backdoor allows snooping on encrypted messages
It makes WhatsApp effectively not E2E encrypted. All messages can be recovered by Facebook. How is that NOT a backdoor?
dromen··on WhatsApp backdoor allows snooping on encrypted messages
We can't have perfect trust in the server, so this feature being supported by the client breaks the security guarantees of WhatsApp's E2E encryption.
dromen··on Google AMP Cache, AMP Lite, and the Need for Speed
How does Google do this legally at all? Can I just download and redistribute any and all content I find on the net, and then present it as if it's the original?

More specifically, how do they not get sued into oblivion for copyright infringement? They are after all redistributing content they are not licensed to redistribute.

dromen··on 20 years as a Debian maintainer
I watched the Rust packaging effort via the mailing list, and that seems to be going quite well.

Would you happen to know a good video or writeup on why language-specific package managers are a bad idea? I mean, the situation with C and C++ libraries seems significantly worse to me, and I personally really enjoy having the fully Crates.io index at my disposal on any box that runs Cargo.

dromen··on 20 years as a Debian maintainer
Are there specific things you had issues with? Debian Testing still feels more stable and as feature-filled as Ubuntu Xenial to me.
dromen··on The Swedish Kings of Cyberwar
How is that biased?

Russia is getting tonnes of flak for basically doing some hacking. They're just a useful distraction from the massive civil rights violations by the US government now people are starting to become less amenable to the "AGAINST TERRORISM!!!" theme.

dromen··on Sixty children referred to UK Government counter-terrorism programme every week
It sounds like they're incentivizing citizen informants. Nothing reminiscent of the DDR there.
dromen··on Micro-Dosing: The Drug Habit Your Boss Is Gonna Love
If this helps LSD, MDMA, magic mushrooms and ketamine get into pharmacies, who am I to complain?
dromen··on The Piston image library is now pure Rust
Piston uses a bunch of pure-Rust image handling libraries. It just integrates them for use in games.
